Rogue Squadron – Where’s the bomb?!

Welcome to Rogue Squadron, pilot! In this series, we will be looking at different squadrons you can fly in Fantasy Flight Games X-Wing miniatures game. We give you the squad, what expansion pack all of the upgrades come from and then give you the low down on how best to fly it. Strap in and get ready to fly.

Scurrg H-6 Bomber “Captain Nym” (Scurrg H-6 Bomber Expansion) (60 pts) (PS 10)

Once per round, you may prevent a friendly bomb from detonating.

  • Bomb- Proton Bomb (TIE Bomber/VT-49 Decimator Expansions): When you reveal your maneuver dial, you may discard this card to drop 1 proton bomb token. This token detonates at the end of the Activation phase.
    • Proton Bomb Token: When this bomb token detonates, deal 1 faceup Damage card to each ship at Range 1 of the token. Then discard this token.
  • Elite Pilot Talent- Veteran Instincts (Millennium Falcon/Slave-1/Sabine’s TIE/Shadowcaster Expansions): Increase your pilot skill value by 2.
  • Missile- Harpoon Missile (Guns for Hire Expansion): Attack (target lock): Discard this card to perform this attack. If this attack hits, after the attack resolves, assign the “Harpooned!” Condition to the defender.
  • Modification- Engine Upgrade (Hound’s Tooth/Millennium Falcon): Your action bar gains the Boost action icon.
  • Salvaged Astromech- Genius (Most Wanted): If you are equipped with a bomb that can be dropped when you reveal your maneuver, you may drop the bomb after you execute your maneuver instead.
  • System- Advanced Sensors (E-Wing/Lambda Shuttle): Immediately before you reveal your maneuver, you may perform 1 free action. If you use this ability, you must skip your “Perform Action” step during this round.
  • Title- Havoc (Scurrg H-6 BomberExpansion): Your upgrade bar gains the Salvaged Astromech and System icons and loses the Crew upgrade icon. You cannot equip non-unique Salvaged Astromech Upgrade cards.
  • Torpedo- Extra Munitions (K-Wing/TIE Punisher Expansions): When you equip this card, place 1 ordnance token on each equipped Bomb, Missile, and Torpedo Upgrade card. When you are instructed to discard an Upgrade card, you may discard 1 ordnance token on that card instead.
  • Turret– Twin Laser Turret (K-Wing/TIE Aggressor Expansions): Attack (3, range 2-3): Perform this attack twice (even against a ship outside your firing arc). Each time this attack hits, the defender suffers 1 damage. Then cancel all dice results.

B/SF-17 Bomber “Crimson Specialist” (Resistance Bomber Expansion) (37 pts) (PS 4)

When placing a bomb token you dropped after revealing your maneuver dial, you may place the bomb token anywhere on the play area touching your ship.

  • Bomb- Ordnance Silo (Resistance Bomber Expansion): B/SF-17 Bomber only. When you equip this card, place 3 ordnance tokens on each other equipped Bomb Upgrade card. When you are instructed to discard a Bomb Upgrade card, you may discard 1 ordnance token on that card instead.
  • Modification- Deflective Plating (Resistance Bomber Expansion): B/SF-17 Bomber only. When a friendly bomb token detonates, you may choose not to suffer its effects. If you do, roll an attack die. On a Hit result, discard this card.
  • System- Trajectory Simulator (Resistance Bomber Expansion): You may launch bombs using the 5 straight template instead of dropping them. You cannot launch bombs with the “Action:” header in this way.
  • Tech- Hyperwave Comm Scanner (Upsilon Shuttle/Quadjumper Expansions): At the start of the “Place Forces” step, you may choose to treat your pilot skill value as “0,” “6,” or “12” until the end of the step. During setup, after another friendly ship is placed at Range 1-2, you may assign 1 focus or evade token to it.

Lock S-Foils in Attack Position

I haven’t had a chance to put the Resistance Bomber on the table yet so I’ve been trying to come up with a good list to fly that makes use of it.  Eventually, I gave up on that and wanted to come up with a list that uses the Resistance Bomber. There are a few lists with three or four of them that might be interesting. But who owns more than one? Then I came up with this. Is it good? Maybe, Nym is always tough. Is it no fun to fly against? Probably.

The idea behind this list is to just throw bombs all over the place. You can chuck them out with trajectory simulator. You can place them anywhere against Crimson Specialists base. You can Genius + Advanced Sensors with Nym. You can put the bomb wherever will be the most annoying for your opponent. And if they still manage to miss it? Oh well, you can let Nym keep it there for later rounds. With eight proton bombs to play with, you’re sure to get some of them to go off.

Your bomber is obviously your sacrificial piece. Use Hyperwave Comm Scanner to place him at PS 12 directly across from your opponent. Then dive right at her, spitting out bombs along the way. Your Deflective Plating will protect you from at least the first proton bomb. At less than 40 points and with 12 total health your opponent will waste a lot of time killing something that won’t win them the game. Meanwhile, Nym can hang back and TLT to his heart’s content, ready to drop bombs when you try to get close to him.

Variations

You have three extra points available on this list that you could do a few things with. Changing out Deflective Plating for an Engine Upgrade might be fun. You could also drop Trajectory Simulator in exchange for Accuracy Corrector on the bomber. Then your two dice attack will always be accurate. Three bombers with Accuracy Corrector, Crossfire Formation and Advanced Optics might be kind of fun. But, like I said, I don’t have three bombers.
