Rogue Squadron – Gray Squadron

Welcome to Rogue Squadron, pilot! In this series, we will be looking at different squadrons you can fly in Fantasy Flight Games X-Wing miniatures game. We give you the squad, what expansion pack all of the upgrades come from and then give you the low down on how best to fly it. Strap in and get ready to fly.

All Wings Report In

Hyperspace legal

5x BTL-A4 Y-Wing “Gray Squadron” (Wave 1) (40 pts) (I2)

None

  • Device- Proton Bomb (Wave 1): Charges: 2. During the System Phase, you may spend 1 Charge to drop a Proton Bomb using the 1 straight template.
    • Proton Bomb (Bomb Token) – At the end of the Activation Phase, this device detonates. When this device detonates, each ship at range 0–1 suffers 1 Crit damage.
  • Turret- Ion Cannon Turret (Wave 1): Adds Rotate Arc
    • Attack (3, range 1-2): If this attack hits, spend 1 Hit or Crit result to cause the defender to suffer 1  damage. All remaining Hit/Crit results inflict ion tokens instead of damage.

Lock S-Foils in Attack Position

After the points change, I wanted to try five Y-wings with Dorsal Turrets and Veteran Turret Gunners but Dorsal isn’t Hyperspace legal. But Ion got cheaper too. Ion your opponent into the loving embrace of your proton bombs. With 40 health it’s going to take any opponent quite a long time to whittle you down. Granted, it’s going to take you just as long to kill them.

In 2.0, when a ship gets ioned, it’s not the end of the world. It clears a stress and can still take a Focus action. But it can’t then reposition with a barrel roll/boost.  So anything you get is going to have a bad time. It also is a bit harder to ion things. I took this list against a Resistance bomber and had a devil of a time getting the third ion to land. I kept doing two damage and he’d roll one evade. Against 12 health, that took a long time. It was even tough against a medium base U-Wing.

Don’t be afraid to split your ships up. Make use of your turrets and envelop your target if you can’t get a straight on joust. If they’re smart, they’ll never straight joust you. That’s how you win. When they don’t, send your damaged Y-wings running and reloading. Make them switch targets and spread the damage around. You’d rather end the game giving away 100pts because all five of them are at half.

Be careful to not get greedy and drop too many bombs. I misjudged a maneuver and had one of my Y-wings eats 4 protons, two of which only hit him. That was free points I gave away. But I still managed to take first in a small local 9 person tournament so that speaks to their ruggedness. It takes a lot to kill a Y-wing.

Variations

Expect something here to go up a point in June so it’s no longer possible.

If you’re not playing Hyperspace format, you could switch to Dorsal Turrets and gain an R4 Astromech on all of them or bump up to Gold Squadron. Or drop the bombs and then take Veteran Turret Gunner. Or drop down to Dorsal, drop the bombs and add a sixth Y-wing. Lots of ways to swarm them.
