Kickstarter Korner – Minor Arcana Dice & Tarot Deck

Critical Kit, a United Kingdom-based RPG company, is in the middle of an already-funded Kickstarter which ends next Monday, July 11, 2022 at 2:01 PM CDT.

The Kickstarter is for polyhedral dice sets with Tarot card Suit themes – Wands, Swords, Cups, Pentacles. The Pentacles Suit dice are pictured above. Pledge levels are for one to four of the “Suits.” In addition, or instead (depending on your pledge level), you can get an art nouveau style Tarot deck, with dice incorporated into the images. In fact the lowest reward tier, £17 (~US$21), is for the Tarot deck alone. Each set comes in a handsome case, with a coin depicting the appropriate Suit. The Kickstarter page linked above has some great pictures. I found the dice colors appealing.

Note that the deck is composed only of the Minor Arcana cards. The 22 Major Arcana cards are a stretch goal that hasn’t been reached as of this writing. But they were less than £2,000/$2,440 short with 12 days to go, so my guess is that it will happen. I talked with my daughter, who uses Tarot cards, and they assure me that a deck with only Minor Arcana is still usable since it contains “Twins” of all the Major Arcana cards. (I know anyone familiar with Tarot cards will know this, but I thought it would be useful information for anyone considering learning Tarot with this deck.)

I tried to find some additional information about the dice and deck, but nothing beyond the Kickstarter page. I did find Critical Kit’s website and it’s a nice little treasure trove for RPGers who cannot get enough dice. (Is there any other type?) There’s more lovely themed dice sets, including licensed The Witcher sets, with coins, like the Minor Arcana sets. You can also get some D&D 5e scenarios priced at US$0-3.50 and Skull or Cthulu dice bags. I also discovered Critical Kit has a subscription service. Yes, a genuine dice of the month club! For $18, you get two sets of polyhedral dice, on a theme, plus art and a discount code.

Finally, I was delighted to see Critical Kit has a unique charity – Dice Donation Drive (d3). Risidual Critical Kit sets are donated to schools and other organizations that use D&D (and maybe other RPGs?) “as a tool to help young people be creative in a safe-space.” If you know of, or belong to such a group, here’s the d3 application page.

So, even if the Minor Arcana sets aren’t your thing, check out Critical Kit’s online stores and maybe you’ll find some sets that are:
USA & North America
UK & EU
