HoloNet Uplink – Droid Tri-Fighter

Welcome to the HoloNet Uplink, citizen. This series focuses on Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars Roleplaying Game, with content aimed mostly at the Gamemaster. Threats, adventure seeds, rules supplements, and more are all to come for those who access The HoloNet Uplink.

Two ship posts in a row? Can you tell I’m digging Starfighter Assault in Battlefront II? I’m having too much of a blast shooting clone pilots out of the sky in a variety of Confederacy droid fighters, so I felt compelled to bust out some stats for that game’s droid interceptor of choice. Winning the Chris Hunt Cutest Starfighter Award (narrowly beating out the junky ol’ C-73 Tracker), the tri-fighter boasts solid weapons and performance to match, making it a useful addition to your GM Holocron. I’ve taken a few liberties in adapting the stats between existing canon sources and the gameplay changes made by Battlefront II.

Droid Tri-Fighter

Produced during the tail end of the Clone Wars, the droid tri-fighter was the space superiority fighter of choice for the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The tri-fighter was a direct response to the shortcomings of the cheaper Vulture-class droid starfighter employed by the Trade Federation, eschewing that low-cost security drone’s financial constraints. At just over five meters long, this dedicated dog-fighter fit multiple laser cannons and a missile launcher into one hard-to-hit package.

Despite these exemplary characteristics, the tri-fighter would have limited impact on the Clone Wars. Plac-Arphocc Industries only began initial delivery by mid-war, with full production capacity coming online just before the Battle of Coruscant. With the Separatist droid armies deactivated, most tri-fighters were impounded and scrapped by the Empire. Some units fell into the hands of proto-Rebel insurgents, allowing resistance cells to take the fight to the Imperial Starfleet despite having no pilots of their own. Though almost all of these resistance tri-fighters have been destroyed, and while officially out of production, it is said that the Colicoids never destroy their prototypes and blueprints. No one can be certain how many tri-fighters may remain deep within the factory-nests of Colla IV.
