Finder’s Archives – Creatures of the Season — Jack Frost

This week, on Finder’s Archives, it’s time for the 3rd of the 4 Christmas Creatures. This week it’s time for Jack Frost.

A 4-foot young man, wearing blue tightfitting clothing over his boyish frame, while unseen winds stir his short, frazzled white hair. Stark white and blue eyes stand out against his pale skin.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Body of Ice (Su)
The body of Jack Frost is continually restored, depending on the ambient temperature in the area. If the ambient temperature is cold (below 40° F) he gains fast healing 5. At severe cold or exposure levels (below 0° F), he gains fast healing 10.

Extinguishing Aura (Su)
All non-magical fires within 60 ft. of Jack Frost are automatically extinguished, while magical fires get a saving throw against the effect. All creatures not immune to cold, take 2d6 points of cold damage each round inside the aura, with a Fortitude saving throw for half damage. Creatures immune to cold suffer no damage, unlike with frost fingers (see below). The ambient temperature also falls to 40° if Jack Frost is there for more than 10 minutes, and 0° if he is there for more than one hour. This ability can be turned off and on at will.

Frost Fingers (Su)
Even the mere touch of Jack Frost can cause extreme cold-burns. The cold is so intense that it ignores resistance to cold and reduces cold immunity to cold resistance 10. This is a touch attack. A DC 23 Fortitude save reduces this damage to half. This ability is Charisma-based.

Icicle Spear (Su)
As an immediate action, Jack Frost can create an icicle spear out of nowhere. The spear causes normal spear damage for a Small creature, and has the same abilities as frost fingers, though an icicle spear is resolved against the normal Armor Class of the target (i.e. it is not a touch attack). The icicle spear melts away into nothingness as soon as it has caused damage. If no damage is caused, it melts away the following round, if the ambient temperature is above 40° F.

Unearthly Grace (Su)
Jack Frost adds his Charisma modifier as a racial bonus on all his saving throws, and as a deflection bonus to his Armor Class.

Many believe that Jack Frost is the younger version of Father Winter, a slightly more benign, if fickle, creature, that brings the cold winters.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Jack Frost IS the living embodiment of winter, as cold and uncaring as the biting winds themselves, though not cruel on purpose. He simply wishes to play and does not understand, in spite of his intelligence, that his mere presence hurts those with whom he wishes to play.
On occasion, a special creature manages to break through the ice around the ego of Jack Frost, and on those occasions, he lowers his aura, and the sagas say that the winters grow milder as he spends time with the one he loves. Unfortunately, while Jack Frost is immortal, never to die of old age, his lovers are usually not. A harsh winter always follows the death of someone that Jack Frost loves, and woe betide the creature who brought about such an end.

Finally, anyone that Jack Frost takes a fancy to (who turns his attitude to helpful) will be bestowed a gift, made of magical permanent ice, typically a magical item somehow related to cold, winter, or frost. The maximum total value bestowed is equal to the standard gold gained from defeating a CR 15 monster (19,500 gp).

40 years old, and a gamer since I was 13. These days I freelance as a writer for various companies (currently Fat Goblin Games, Flaming Crab Games, Outland Entertainment, Paizo, Raging Swan Games, Rusted Iron Games, and Zenith Games), I've dipped my hands into all sorts of games, but my current "go-to" games are Pathfinder 2, Dungeon Crawl Classics and SLA Industries. Unfortunately, while wargaming used to be a big hobby, with wife, dog and daughter came less time.
