\"g2p\"G2P (\u201cGames 2 Play\u201d) is a semi-regular segment from GM Chris, and is devoted to showcasing the\u00a0rare, the unusual, the crazy, the Indie, and (only very occasionally) the wildly popular in the tabletop RPG world. \u00a0Games that you\u00a0either\u00a0didn\u2019t know existed, games that you should try out as soon as you can, games that will make you laugh or hang your jaw in wonder at\u00a0their amazeballs glory. \u00a0In other words: \u00a0games to play. \u00a0 This episode\u2026\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

When I first met the woman who was soon to be my *My Lovely Wife, I discovered and fell in love with her nerdy passions \u2013 many of which matched my own.\u00a0 But one big differentiator between my own geekdoms and *MLW\u2019s was the four letters behind the word \u201cStar\u201d.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always loved Star TREK (how can you not?) but Star WARS was always my preferred galactic adventure.\u00a0 Not so for MLW.\u00a0 While she loved lightsabers and black-helmeted Sith Lords, they couldn\u2019t compare to the heroics of Kirk\u2019s double-fisted back-punches and Picard\u2019s bald-headed (and quite sexy, per MLW) dramatic persona.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s something to be said for Star Trek.\u00a0 It defined a generation (as much as Star Wars did) and remains a highly popular (if hotly disputed) fandom.\u00a0 For many roleplayers, it\u2019s thus a natural inclination to set phasers to stun and roll some dice.\u00a0 Alas, the attempts at a Star Trek RPG have been\u2026 in a word\u2026 \u201clacking\u201d.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be frank.\u00a0 They\u2019ve sucked.<\/p>\n

Though some will surely disagree with me, I\u2019ve found all editions of licensed Star Trek RPGs to have some serious problems; from the original game produced by FASA in \u201982, through Last Unicorn\u2019s just awful post-TOS games, up to Decipher\u2019s flawed 2002 attempt (panned by fans and critics alike).\u00a0 What\u2019s going on?\u00a0 Why can\u2019t the industry seem to bring the RPG love to this much beloved property?<\/p>\n

In my own continuing mission to explore strange new RPGs, to seek out new games and new mechanics, to boldly go where no gamer has gone before\u2026 I come to a fairly popular Indie title that is actually hailed by both critics and fans.\u00a0 A game so free-form, so narrative, so utterly divergent from every Trek RPG \u2013 and honestly, most every other RPG of any type \u2013 that it succeeds where others fail.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a licensed Star Trek product, and neither the game nor the designers represent it as such, or even make mention of the IP.\u00a0 So please don\u2019t misunderstand \u2013 this is NOT a Star Trek RPG.\u00a0 But it IS an RPG that is created out of a clear love of Star Trek and other cheese-tastic sci-fi shows and films from the 60s and 70s.\u00a0 It\u2019s an RPG that gives me my Trek fix, and it\u2019s called Lasers & Feelings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Created by mastermind John Harper, whose name you might recognize as the creator of the recently funded (for almost $180,000) \u201cBlades in the Dark<\/a>\u201d Kickstarter campaign, Lasers & Feelings is one of John\u2019s earlier titles; and like so many produced by his production house, One Seven Design<\/a>, it is a FREE game.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Free.\u00a0 One Seven has been the leader in the clubhouse for the \u201cfree\u201d\/\u201cpay-as-you-want\u201d RPG model; and his over $2,000 a month Patreon<\/a> contributions do lend some credence to the concept.\u00a0 John has done work on Talislanta, Bootleggers, and World of Dungeons \u2013 but is probably best known for his free \u201cpocket RPGs\u201d like the critically hailed Lady Blackbird<\/a> and GHOST\/ECHO<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Lasers & Feelings<\/a> is possibly the best known and most commonly played of these pocket RPGs (at least, from my own convention experience), and remains a game that can be thrown down at a moment\u2019s notice.\u00a0 Little to no prep time.\u00a0 Less than 1 minute to create a character.\u00a0 And, oh yeah, the entire RPG is one page long.\u00a0 Not \u201cfront and back\u201d.\u00a0 One. \u00a0Single. \u00a0Page.\u00a0 Long.<\/p>\n

Let me let that sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n

What is Lasers & Feelings?\u00a0 Inspired by the nerd-tastic song from The Doubleclicks, Lasers & Feelings is a simple narrative RPG that captures the tongue-in-cheek feel of a crew of futuristic explorers battling strange occurrences in unexplored space, resolving personal conflicts between the crew, and dealing with sexy green aliens and amorphous energy entities. \u00a0And (like all of Harper’s personal work) is beautifully designed; both graphically and mechanically.<\/p>\n

Each player takes the role of a member of the Consortium who are crewing an interstellar scout ship, the RAPTOR<\/em>.\u00a0 The ship\u2019s captain is currently recovering in a medical pod after being overcome by the strange psychic entity known as Something Else<\/em>, and the crew must fend for themselves.<\/p>\n

Creating a character involves picking a style (anything will work, with examples like \u201cAlien\u201d, \u201cAndroid\u201d, \u201cIntrepid\u201d, or \u201cHot-Shot\u201d) and a role (again, anything will work, but examples include \u201cDoctor\u201d, \u201cPilot\u201d, or \u201cScientist\u201d).\u00a0 The combination of the two creates the crux of your character\u2019s personality and job: the \u201cSexy Doctor\u201d or the \u201cIntrepid Envoy\u201d or the \u201cAndroid Engineer\u201d.<\/p>\n

Following this, each player picks their Number (2 to 5).\u00a0 The number represents how they tend to attack problems and resolve situations.\u00a0 A higher number means the character leans more on LASERS (technology; science; cold rationality; calm, precise action).\u00a0 A lower number means the character leans more on FEELINGS (intuition; diplomacy; seduction; wild, passionate action).\u00a0 To be clear \u2013 combat and fighting are not domain of LASERS.\u00a0 Nor is negotiation and speech-making the domain of FEELINGS.\u00a0 The two polarities of character leanings represent how a character is likely to deal with any<\/em> problem that comes their way.\u00a0 Kirk would likely be a 2, rushing into passionate action and trusting his gut, whether fighting an alien entity or seducing a green-skinned lady.\u00a0 Spock would be a 5.\u00a0 Definitely a 5.\u00a0 Even technical work can run the gamut.\u00a0 Geordi is an engineer who uses intuition, while Data is one who uses careful precision.\u00a0 A character\u2019s Number is integral to their success at resolving actions (which we\u2019ll come to).<\/p>\n

Finally, each character chooses a quick few-word Goal (like \u201cMeet sexy aliens\u201d, \u201cShoot bad guys\u201d, or \u201cSolve weird space mysteries\u201d) to drive them, and makes up a \u201ccool space adventure name\u201d.\u00a0 Players start with identical equipment, which include a Consortium uniform, a phase pistol, and a \u201csuper-sweet space-phone-camera-communicator-scanner thing (with universal translator)\u201d.<\/p>\n

In the likely less than half a minute it has taken each player to jot down these pertinent details of their heroes, the GM will likely have created an adventure with a few hooks, possibly using the quick adventure seed generator that is included in the game.\u00a0 Players can also quickly create their ship, the \u201cRAPTOR\u201d, by adding a couple of strengths the ship has (such as \u201cNimble\u201d or \u201cWell Armed\u201d) and one problem it has (such as \u201cFuel Hog\u201d or \u00a0\u201cOnly One Medical Pod\u201d \u2013 which sucks, since the captain is in it\u2026)<\/p>\n

Then, it\u2019s time for daring space adventure!\u00a0 Doing things in Lasers & Feelings is pretty simple.\u00a0 All you needs is a few d6s.\u00a0 When a player wants to accomplish something risky, he and GM decide what the action and successful outcome will be, and how the player is going to tackle the problem: with LASERS or with FEELINGS.\u00a0 Once ready, the player grabs a 1d6.\u00a0 If they\u2019re prepared, they grab another +1d6.\u00a0 And if they\u2019re somehow an expert on the problem (this is where style and role come into play), then they grab another<\/em> +1d6.\u00a0 Then they roll, and compare each die result to their Number.<\/p>\n

If it\u2019s a LASERS roll, each result under your Number is a success.\u00a0 If it\u2019s a FEELINGS roll, each result over your Number is a success.\u00a0 The number of successes you generate determines how well you succeed (with complication or without).\u00a0 There\u2019s also another rather cute rule.\u00a0 If one of your dice rolls your number exactly<\/em>, then you get \u201cLaser Feelings\u201d.\u00a0 You get to ask the GM a question, and they will give you an honest answer.\u00a0 Then you may choose to reroll.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s honestly it.<\/p>\n

And it is the most fun I\u2019ve had playing in a pick-up game in years.\u00a0 No minis, no maps, no hit points, no glossary of conditions and terminology.\u00a0 Just raw narrative roleplaying where the power is put into the players\u2019 hands to deal with insane situations put forth by the GM.\u00a0 And the game also provides excellent GM advice in a slap-yourself-simple paragraph or two of how to run this game well<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This is not a Star Trek RPG.\u00a0 But it\u2019s the best Star Trek RPG I\u2019ve ever played in.\u00a0 The fast, creative action, the player-controlled narrative, and the elegantly simple \u201cNumber\u201d concept represent the personality diffusion and fun that embodies the genre, and can handle most any situation. \u00a0Honestly, the system is simple enough (some might say, ironically, robust enough<\/em>) to handle alternate settings or virtually any campaign concept where the players and GM are looking for something quick, versatile, and highly narrative. \u00a0If you haven\u2019t already downloaded Lasers & Feelings (again, it\u2019s FREE), then please do.\u00a0 Take a read at a brilliantly designed master-course in simple RPG creation and sacrificing the complex for simple fun.\u00a0 Then get it on the table.\u00a0 NOW.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be glad you did.<\/p>\n
