I\u2019ve discussed 9th Level Games<\/a> in some<\/a> articles<\/a>, but have yet to interview the crew behind Kobolds Ate My Baby!<\/a>, Mazes<\/a>,<\/i> LEVEL 1 \u2013 The Free RPG Day Official Anthology<\/i><\/a>, and The Excellents RPG<\/i>. With their latest Kickstarter<\/a>, I\u2019m able to close that gap as we discuss the latest printing of The Excellents RPG<\/i>, the special items this Kickstarter will include, and 2021\u2019s Free RPG Day anthology plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>EGG EMBRY (EGG)<\/b>: Adriel <\/b>and <\/b>Chris, thanks for talking to me about your latest project. What are you kickstarting<\/a>?<\/b><\/p>\n

C<\/b>HRIS<\/b> O\u2019NEILL (Chris)<\/b>: We are Kickstarting a new book for The<\/i> Excellents RPG<\/i><\/a>, as well as a ton of new princess accessories.<\/p>\n

ADRIEL <\/b>WILSON<\/b> <\/b>(ADRIEL)<\/b>: You might be surprised that there aren\u2019t a lot of glittery princess accessories for roleplaying games.<\/p>\n

CHRIS<\/b>: SHOCKING! Yeah. We are ready to do the third printing on The Excellents<\/i>, and we felt it was time to do a bigger Kickstarter so that we could do the new Game Diary \u2013 which is like a character journal and sourcebook rolled into one. It also means that we could kickstart some other cool things.<\/p>\n

ADRIEL<\/b>: Like luxury dice from Level Up.<\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: <\/b>Making it to a third printing is impressive. <\/b>What\u2019s the premise of <\/b>The Excellents<\/b><\/i>?<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

ADRIEL<\/b>: In T<\/i>he Excellents<\/i>, we are all cartoon princesses \u2013 the Universe gives us powers to protect the world because we are super excellent at something. It\u2019s a little Adventure Time<\/i>, a little She-Ra<\/i>, a little Disney Princesses \u2013 and a whole lot of 9th Level Games<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: How does <\/b>T<\/b><\/i>he<\/b><\/i> Excellents\u2019<\/b><\/i> engine, <\/b>Polymorph<\/b><\/i>, work?<\/b><\/p>\n

CHRIS<\/b>: Well, P<\/i>olymorph<\/i> is our core engine \u2013 T<\/i>he Excellents<\/i> and Mazes<\/i> are the first games that we put out (last year), and both were really well received. Both games use the core Polymorph<\/i> system but are very different. At its core, Polymorph<\/i> \u201cfeels\u201d like a crunchy game \u2013 without any math or complicated rules. Each character is represented by a single polyhedral die \u2013 a d4, d6, d8, or a d10. When you want to do something, you roll your die (you only ever roll your die), and try to hit specific numbers that are listed on your character sheet. When you are good at something \u2013 so in T<\/i>he Excellents<\/i>, for instance, you have a LIBRARY BOOK which determines what kind of \u201csmarts\u201d you’re good at. So, if you have something that you’re good at \u2013 you get to roll with advantage.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Polymorph<\/i> itself was created as a framework for making games \u2013 so every game made with Polymorph<\/i> feels unique and different \u2013 but they all have the same DNA. In fact, Mazes<\/i> won the IGDN award<\/a> and was nominated by the ENnies for BEST RULES<\/a> \u2013 so that\u2019s something.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: <\/b>The Excellents RPG<\/a><\/b><\/i> is available now, but this Kickstarter<\/a> offers a variety of extras. What are you offering? <\/b><\/p>\n

ADRIEL<\/b>: The big thing is the GAME DIARY. It\u2019s a book where you can put your princesses, like a character sheet book. And draw pictures and keep stories of your adventures. It also has awesome premade princesses like Dungeons Princess, Dragons Princess and Ceral Princess.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We are also offering dice from the luxury dice makers Level Up. There is a colored aluminum set (16mm regular sized) etched with the 1 as a PAW PRINT and the highest number as a number in a crown (which are specifically tied to T<\/i>he Excellents<\/i> game). There is also a Level Up set that are 25mm \u2013 big chunky resin dice \u2013 that will hopefully be glittery. I really want to roll these dice!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: What\u2019s in the R<\/b>oll<\/b>20 Pack?<\/b><\/p>\n

CHRIS<\/b>: We made a full integrated character sheet \u2013 so you can make a character on Roll20<\/a> and roll 3d dice right from the character sheet. There is also a play space \u2013 where you can have interactions, and cards for effects. There is a PDF version attached the playset \u2013 and some handout sheets preloaded. We\u2019re working with Roll20 to do some cool stuff \u2013 were doing a show with them, and were part of their Roll20 CON<\/a> (October 21-23).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: 9th Level Games<\/a> is known for several games such as <\/b>Kobolds Ate My Baby!<\/a>, Mazes<\/a>,<\/b><\/i> and <\/b>LEVEL 1 \u2013 The Free RPG Day Official Anthology<\/b><\/i><\/a>. Between those and <\/b>T<\/b><\/i>he<\/b><\/i> Excellents<\/b><\/i>, there\u2019s a solid range of subject matters. As a publisher, what makes an RPG a 9th Level Game? What makes you pick this game or that one out and publish it?<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

CHRIS<\/b>: Most of our games are games that we design. But we\u2019re starting to grow up and make other peoples\u2019 games \u2013 and our focus is really on interesting, fun, diverse content. Polymorph<\/i> is what we are really focused on right now \u2013 so any game that is using Polymorph<\/i> could be a fit \u2013 we just released BUSINESS WIZARDS a P<\/i>olymorph<\/i> game about being wizards that work at soul sucking (often literally) corporate jobs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: <\/b>LEVEL 1 \u2013 The Free RPG Day Official Anthology<\/b><\/i> was a great addition to Free RPG Day<\/a> 2020, thank you for creating it. What inspired you to take on that project?<\/b><\/p>\n

ADRIEL<\/b>: We really saw a need in the market \u2013 there was almost no representation from the Indie community as part of Free RPG Day, and when ownership changed to Gaming Days<\/a> we pitched the idea to them and they were excited<\/a>. We had worked on an anthology a few years ago \u2013 Tragedies of Middle School<\/i><\/a> \u2013 and that was a project that we really enjoy working on.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: How did <\/b>Level 1<\/b><\/i> turn out? What lessons did you learn from that project that you plan to apply to future anthologies?<\/b><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>CHRIS<\/b>: Well, the good news is that it was a real hit. Some people didn\u2019t understand it \u2013 but a vast majority of stores reported that it went over really well. We had a great time working with publisher partners to fund the project \u2013 who got cool adverts in the book. We need to do a better job of getting the project in front of more publishers, as well as getting the store owners and Free RPG Day community excited about the next one. Out real hope is that Level 1<\/i> is here for the future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EGG<\/b>: Speaking of future anthologies, let\u2019s talk about <\/b>Level 1 2021 Designer Submission Form<\/b><\/i><\/a>. What is that?<\/b><\/p>\n

A<\/b>DRIEL<\/b>: So, we have opened the gates to the submissions process for LEVEL 1 Vol 2 (Free RPG Day 2021)<\/i><\/a>. This year there is a theme: Masks. So we are looking for short, self contained games that have to do with super heroes, and masquerades, and emotional masks, and sheeps clothing. We are excited to work with as many designers as possible \u2013 and will be putting out 10-15 games in the anthology next year.<\/p>\n
