This blog post will likely come to you a few weeks after the fact, but as of this writing, last night was the announcement on the d20radio website of the shuttering of the RPG department of Fantasy Flight Games. Hopefully, everyone in the department will find new outlets to keep themselves and their families going and continue to contribute to this hobby of ours. I’ll even be the first to admit that I’m really disheartened by the news as well because I’d hoped that one day I’d be able to contribute there myself. As some of you might know, I’m a pretty prolific freelancer (And if you don’t know, look me up \ud83d\ude1b ), but it’s always been a dream to contribute to something, anything, to Star Wars – something going beyond my fan-musings.<\/p>\n
That is not why I’m here today though, that is to remind you that the game, hobby, and fans can still continue. Now, as of this writing, we don’t know if Genesys will continue its work with OneBookShelf for the Foundry, but even assuming that it doesn’t, there’s nothing to stop you from putting out your work, as long as you’re not trying to gain a profit from it. After all, isn’t that what Keith did for YEARS with the Fandomcomics website? (Much to my dismay, when I checked out that site, it now appears to be a crap scam site for getting free Netflix access. Not sure what happened there). More importantly, while there might not be any new material coming out from FFG, you can still continue your campaigns. Chris, Dave and Phil have given us hundreds of hours worth of material on the podcast alone, and on top of that, there’s all the fan-generated content. You could keep going for this system for years.<\/p>\n
And if you crave new Star Wars content or RPGs, well, there’s probably hope there too. At least in the long run, though not as much in the short run. An IP like this is not going to lie dormant forever, though I do expect it to take a hiatus. The past has proved that this IP is nothing if not resilient on the game front. A new RPG will reappear one day. Will it be to your liking? Only time will tell. In the meantime, enjoy your FFG Star Wars. Or your Saga. Or your (revised) d20. Or your WEG d6 system. Any system you like. None of them have gone away entirely and you can still find them AND play them if you want. Nobody will stop you from doing so. And just as importantly, the whole Gamer Nation is right there along with you, playing systems no one publishes anymore, and, in some cases, no one remembers anymore.<\/p>\n
