For Kenzer &amp; Co\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenzerco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Knights of the Dinner Table<\/em><\/a>, I reviewed <em>ALIEN: The Roleplaying Game: Cinematic Starter Kit<\/em> that Free League made available as soon as you pre-ordered the <a href=\"https:\/\/alien-rpg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ALIEN RPG<\/em><\/a>. At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gencon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gen Con<\/a>, I played the <em>ALIEN RPG<\/em> demo, <em>Last Days of Hadley&#8217;s Hope<\/em>, an event my pal, <a href=\"http:\/\/tesseraguild.com\/john-mcguire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John McGuire<\/a>, detailed (<a href=\"http:\/\/tesseraguild.com\/gen-con-2019-recap-part-two\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>). To put it simply, you felt like you were in one of the [better] films. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enworld.org\/ewr-porta\/authors\/egg-embry.6808965\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EN World<\/a>, I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enworld.org\/threads\/interview-with-tomas-h%C3%A4renstam-free-league%E2%80%99s-alien-rpg.666449\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interviewed Tomas H\u00e4renstam<\/a>, Free League\u2019s CEO and Game Director for the <em>ALIEN RPG<\/em>, about the game and how the license came together. All of this is to say that I have come along on this journey as it headed towards its most important moment, releasing this edition. With all of the buildup, this is like seeing the movie after watching the trailers and reading the novelization. As you can tell, I went into this very hyped for what was to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>WHO IS FREE LEAGUE?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19307 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario-220x300.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario-749x1024.jpg 749w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario-768x1050.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Chariot-of-the-Gods-Scenario.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>Why was I hyped? Beyond the previews, I\u2019ve read and played a number of <em>Mutant: Year Zero<\/em> engine games from Free League Publishing. Named <em>Fria Ligan<\/em> in Sweden, the publisher&#8217;s country of origin, Free League is the publisher behind some of the most award-winning tabletop roleplaying games on the market today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/frialigan.se\/en\/games\/tales-from-the-loop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Tales from the Loop<\/em><\/a> (5 Gold ENnie Awards)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/frialigan.se\/en\/games\/coriolis-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Coriolis<\/em><\/a> (Judges Spotlight ENnie Award)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/frialigan.se\/en\/games\/forbidden-lands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Forbidden Lands<\/em><\/a> (Origins Awards Nominee)<\/li>\n<li>Their core game\/system, <a href=\"https:\/\/frialigan.se\/en\/games\/mutant-year-zero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Mutant: Year Zero<\/em><\/a> (1 Silver ENnie Award, Best Roleplaying Game UK Games Expo, Game of the Year \u2013 <em>Fenix Magazine<\/em>, and Best Swedish Game \u2013 Spelkult)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>MUTANT: YEAR ZERO ENGINE<\/h2>\n<p>I expect the <em>ALIEN RPG<\/em> to add to that list of awards and a lot of that is because of the <em>Mutant: Year Zero<\/em> engine. For this version of the <em>M:YZ<\/em> engine, there are some nuances to the gameplay even as it holds true to its core.<\/p>\n<p>The game is based on d6 dice pools formed from an Attribute plus a Skill plus any related Gear plus Stress Dice. A single 6 is a success, additional 6s result in Stunts. Statistically, you will fail rolls, but there\u2019s an option called Pushing that allows you a single re-roll. Pushing has an upside and a downside and they\u2019re the same thing; it causes you to add Stress Dice to your pool. That is the secret sauce of this system,&#8211;Stress Dice add to your dice pool increasing your odds for success, but also introducing the potential to cause your character to Panic. 6s are successes on any die, while 1s on a Stress die (only) leads the character to crack under the pressure which can result in the character running out of ammo and\/or going catatonic and\/or another serious condition. This system treats these bad dice as gains until they go bad. In a system where you\u2019re competing against the monster\u2019s ability to inflict harm and the corporation\u2019s greed, adding the dice\u2019s ability to inflict Panic makes the game seem tilted against your character. Which, in the Cinematic Play mode, means it feels exactly like the <em>ALIEN<\/em> franchise if your character is not played by Sigourney Weaver.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>ALIEN RPG<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19308 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook-756x1024.jpg 756w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook-768x1040.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ALIEN-RPG-Core-Rulebook.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a>The 392-page, gorgeously illustrated hardcover core rulebook sets the game after <em>ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN 3<\/em>, and, of course, <em>Prometheus<\/em>. So, there\u2019s a baseline to work from but you\u2019re not dealing with any disparate threads created by the novels or the Dark Horse comics. Instead, you get a succinct overview of the universe (a subject ideal for a follow-up book that digs deeper into the universe\u2019s mythology). There are the factions, the aliens, the ideas of what life in space in like.<\/p>\n<p>The system has won awards, but does that mean it works well for the <em>ALIEN<\/em> franchise? In a word, yes. Let\u2019s talk about what <em>ALIEN<\/em> is to many: Ridley Scott\u2019s slow burn sci-fi horror and James Cameron\u2019s wall-to-wall sci-fi action movie. Those are two different masters with two different agendas. Designing gameplay that can provide both is a tall order. The <em>ALIEN RPG<\/em> delivers with a system that generates suspense, action, mechs, vehicles, space combat, and more, yet does not turn into <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.rpg.net\/index.php?threads\/phoenix-command-its-awesome.534963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Phoenix Command<\/em><\/a>. Characters have classes taken from the movies: Colonial Marine, Company Agent, Kid, and so on. Each class guides your creation without being overly complex and time-consuming. The Engineers and the Xenomorphs get an entire section discussing what\u2019s known of them and their traits in gameplay, yet, again, leaving room for story without having to dwell in endless detail.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the difference in the source material (movies) and the demands of a tabletop RPG (long form narratives), this game offers two play modes: Cinematic Play and Campaign Play. I\u2019ve covered the Cinematic Play for <em>Knights of the Dinner Table<\/em> so I\u2019ll only summarize it here as high-stakes, one-and-done game play. The demo I played, <em>Last Days of Hadley\u2019s Hope<\/em> (renamed <em>Hope\u2019s Last Day<\/em> in the book), was done in Cinematic Play and it felt like a missing chapter between <em>ALIEN<\/em> and <em>ALIENS<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign Play is, as the title indicates, for campaigns and it offers less lethal options for a longer story. Now, that is not to say it is not lethal, it is, it\u2019s just not as lethal compared to Cinematic Play, which is a meat grinder. How Campaign Play turns down the mortality rate is by introducing deeper stories where you\u2019re not blundering into Xenomorphs during the first scene. Instead, you\u2019re working in space and dealing with the difficulties of life on the frontier as a space trucker or a Colonial Marine before the first facehugger, or other alien, appears.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU ROLL<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19305 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371-300x156.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371-1024x532.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Alien_RPG_GM_Screen_a3928a93-d282-4116-afa7-6594a988f371.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>(I\u2019ve got to be the 45,000th reviewer so far to put that tired line in.)<\/p>\n<p>Is this game worth purchasing? If you love the <em>ALIENS<\/em> franchise or sci-fi horror or sci-fi tension, then this game will not disappoint. The art and layout are outstanding (I spent some greater number of words on that in my <em>Knights of the Dinner Table<\/em> review and the final product features a depth of stunning images. This RPG feels like an art book with works that feel like they\u2019ve been taken from the production art for a future film. The writing is atmospheric, capable of delivering a tale that feels like a chapter from this universe yet brief in its delivery.
