{"id":19257,"date":"2019-12-17T07:00:53","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T13:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/?p=19257"},"modified":"2019-12-11T13:53:18","modified_gmt":"2019-12-11T19:53:18","slug":"campaign-hq-the-final-frontier-choosing-an-era-for-star-trek-roleplaying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/campaign-hq-the-final-frontier-choosing-an-era-for-star-trek-roleplaying\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign HQ \u2013 The Final Frontier:  Choosing an Era for Star Trek Roleplaying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this week\u2019s installment, I am going to look at one of the most fundamental questions that you as a GM will need to answer before starting an RPG campaign in the <em>Star Trek<\/em> setting: what era will you set your campaign in?\u00a0 Depending upon your familiarity with the various television series, movies, games, and other source materials you likely have a favorite era already in mind.\u00a0 I am going to discuss the different eras of play focusing on the pros and cons of each one.\u00a0 I will also offer some other bits of advice as you prepare to boldly carry your gaming group to the final frontier!<\/p>\n<p>Roleplaying in the <em>Star Trek<\/em> universe can be broadly defined in terms of two primary eras; The Original Series and The Next Generation.\u00a0 I am not considering the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Alternate_reality\">Kelvin Timeline<\/a> of the newest <em>Star Trek<\/em> films in this discussion as it can be treated as an alternate reality of the primary timeline.\u00a0 With all the different shows out there now spanning approximately 250 years from <em>Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em> (<em>ST:E<\/em>) all the way to <em>Star Trek: Picard <\/em>(<em>ST:P<\/em>), I think that a GM should consider setting a campaign in one of six eras:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pre-Federation\/Early Federation (c. 2150 \u2013 2225)<\/li>\n<li>Discovery Era (c. 2225-2265)<\/li>\n<li>The Original Series (2265-2275)<\/li>\n<li>The Motion Picture Era (2275-2295)<\/li>\n<li>The Next Generation (2360-2380)<\/li>\n<li>Future of the Federation (2380+)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong><u>Pre-Federation\/Early Federation (c. 2150 \u2013 2225)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>With the series <em>Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em> starting in 2151, this era is marked by early human exploration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Alpha_Quadrant\">Alpha Quadrant<\/a>.\u00a0 Mankind is building its relationship with the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Vulcan\">Vulcans<\/a> and just becoming aware of other threats out in deep space such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Klingon\">Klingons<\/a>.\u00a0 Near the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Enterprise_(NX-01)\"><em>NX-01 Enterprise<\/em>\u2019s<\/a> mission under <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Jonathan_Archer\">Captain Jonathan Archer<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/United_Federation_of_Planets\">United Federation of Planets<\/a> (UFP) was founded by Humans, Vulcans, <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Tellarite\">Tellarites<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Andorian\">Andorians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>A campaign set in this era is wide open for exploration as the Alpha Quadrant is still largely unknown to humanity.\u00a0 After the founding of the UFP, ships can incorporate members from any of the member worlds though the early alliance may still be marked by distrust.\u00a0 PCs can participate in events linked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Temporal_Cold_War\">Temporal Cold War<\/a> explored in the <em>ST:E<\/em> series or discover other threats which they can resolve early in the history of the UFP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>It\u2019s a small sandbox primarily due to slower warp speeds and limited exploration.\u00a0 Equipment and vessels featured in most RPG supplements will need to be scaled back to fit the technology of the era.\u00a0 Aside from <em>ST:E<\/em> there is not much to go on in this time period.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>Discovery Era (c. 2225-2265)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The events of <em>Star Trek: Discovery <\/em>(<em>ST:D<\/em>) begin around 2250 during this era.\u00a0 The UFP has grown and matured, having fought conflicts with both the Klingons and <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Romulan\">Romulans<\/a>.\u00a0 The Federation is preparing to explore further than it has before with ships of the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Constitution_class\"><em>Constitution \u2013 class<\/em><\/a> being developed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>This time period is a fertile ground for a campaign focused on exploration or military goals.\u00a0 It is just close enough to the time period of <em>Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em> (<em>ST:TOS<\/em>) to be familiar to most players while still preserving a sense of mystery.\u00a0 A wide array of character and ship options should be available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>We are still learning about this era as <em>ST:D<\/em> unfolds so it may restrict creativity for any GM concerned about continuity.\u00a0 Moving a campaign forward a few years into <em>The Original Series<\/em> era may make more sense.\u00a0 Much like the Pre-Federation\/Early Federation era, there may not be enough information for this campaign to thrive.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>The Original Series (2265-2275)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is an era marked by the adventures of the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701)\"><em>U.S.S. Enterprise<\/em><\/a> during it\u2019s five-year mission as explored in <em>ST:TOS<\/em> and <em>Star Trek: The Animated Series<\/em> (<em>ST:TAS<\/em>) up until just beyond the events of <em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture<\/em>.\u00a0 Starfleet vessels each had their own unique insignia until after the successful mission of the <em>Enterprise<\/em>.\u00a0 The Federation has grown and new threats have been discovered such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Gorn\">Gorn<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Tholian\">Tholians<\/a> while open conflict with the Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire has been narrowly avoided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>Adventures in this era will evoke the adventure and charm of <em>ST:TOS<\/em>.\u00a0 There are a lot of resources available to flesh out this setting.\u00a0 Exploration and facing the unknown should be frequent themes of a campaign in this time period.\u00a0 Campaigns in this era could easily continue from the Discovery Era and\/or into the Motion Picture Era.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>This era spans only a decade and campaigns here run the risk of always being in the shadow of <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/James_T._Kirk\">James T. Kirk<\/a> and the <em>Enterprise<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>The Motion Picture Era (2275-2295)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This is a turbulent period beginning just prior to the events of <em>Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan<\/em> and wrapping up a number of years after the loss of Admiral James T. Kirk as depicted in <em>Star Trek: Generations<\/em>.\u00a0 Tensions rise with the Klingon Empire until the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Khitomer_Accords\">Khitomer Accords<\/a> result in a solid peace treaty.\u00a0 Exploration is still a primary mission of Starfleet and new undiscovered adversaries lie in wait such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Cardassian\">Cardassian<\/a> Union and the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Ferengi\">Ferengi<\/a> Alliance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>This era sees the advent of trans-warp drive and other significant advances.\u00a0 Romulan espionage and Klingon aggression present opportunities for more combat oriented scenarios.\u00a0 This time provides opportunities for missions inside Klingon Space after the passage of the Khitomer Accords.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>A campaign in this era runs against the backdrop of the crew of the <em>U.S.S. Enterprise<\/em> saving the Federation again and again.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>The Next Generation (2360-2380)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Beginning a few years before the start of <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> (<em>ST:TNG<\/em>) and continuing through the events of <em>Star Trek: Nemesis<\/em>, this era is arguably the most fertile ground for an RPG campaign.\u00a0 During this time period the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Bajoran_wormhole\">Bajoran Wormhole<\/a> opens up exploration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Gamma_Quadrant\">Gamma Quadrant<\/a> and the Federation meets challenges by the Cardassian Union, <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Dominion\">The Dominion<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Borg\">The Borg Collective<\/a>.\u00a0 Additionally, an omniscient species of beings known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Q_Continuum\">Q Continuum<\/a> periodically interferes in human activities in order to test humanity\u2019s right to exist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>Three different <em>Star Trek<\/em> television series provide ample source material for this era.\u00a0 Two new quadrants, Gamma and <a href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Delta_Quadrant\">Delta<\/a>, are opened up for exploration.\u00a0 There are plenty of opportunities for PCs to contribute to larger storylines without being overshadowed by NPC heroes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>Some of the ugliest Starfleet uniforms are in this era.\u00a0 That is my only criticism.<\/p>\n<h4><strong><u>Future of the Federation (2380+)<\/u><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Currently, this is the cleanest slate for adventures in the <em>Star Trek<\/em> universe.\u00a0 This era is only explored briefly in the final episode of <em>ST:TNG<\/em> and in the new series <em>ST:P<\/em>.\u00a0 The state of the Federation at this time is unknown, but it is reasonable to expect that Starfleet is still dedicated to exploration and meeting new challenges all of the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros:\u00a0 <\/strong>Almost completely unconstrained with little chance of affecting continuity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cons:\u00a0 <\/strong>Until <em>ST:P<\/em> gets underway we are only left to speculate about the state of the galaxy in this time period.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>In Closing<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In my humble opinion, I believe that the Next Generation Era provides the best opportunities for setting a <em>Star Trek<\/em> campaign.\u00a0 Regardless of which RPG version you choose to play with most of them have ample source material for this era and Memory Alpha is a great online trove as well.\u00a0 However, when it comes down to making your final choice, the best thing that a GM can do is consult the players you are bringing to the table and get their input on what they want to experience.\u00a0 You will be creating adventures with them and having them invested in the setting will insure that your campaign is both entertaining and fulfilling for everyone at the table.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>In this week\u2019s installment, I am going to look at one of the most fundamental questions that you as a GM will need to answer <a class=\"mh-excerpt-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.d20radio.com\/main\/campaign-hq-the-final-frontier-choosing-an-era-for-star-trek-roleplaying\/\" title=\"Campaign HQ \u2013 The Final Frontier:  Choosing an Era for Star Trek Roleplaying\">[&#8230;]<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"author":911,"featured_media":19259,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_ef_editorial_meta_date_first-draft-date":"","_ef_editorial_meta_paragraph_assignment":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[2582],"tags":[61,156,95],"class_list":["post-19257","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-campaign-headquarters","tag-gm-advice","tag-roleplaying-games","tag-star-trek"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
