On July 29th 2019, Stranger Comics shared the PDF of <\/span>Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Niobe<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>with the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Kickstarter backers. On August 1st 2019, at\u00a0<\/span>Gen Con<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span><\/a>\u00a0dropped\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder 2e<\/span><\/i>. With\u00a0<\/span>Paizo’s<\/span>\u00a0involvement in\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Niobe<\/span><\/i><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>this product could be viewed as the last Paizo <\/span><\/b>Pathfinder 1e<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0product to come out before\u00a0<\/span><\/b>2e<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0debuts<\/span><\/b>. Niobe\u2019s universe is a great story (<\/span>one that HBO has optioned<\/span><\/a>) and it’s a<\/span>n excellent choice\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>close out<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>PF1e<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First seen in the mini-series, <\/span>Niobe: She is Life<\/span><\/i><\/a>, written by creator Sebastian A. Jones and actress Amandla Stenberg (<\/span>The Hunger Games, The Hate U Give<\/span><\/i>)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and illustrated by Ashley A. Woods, this is the story of:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

D&D<\/span><\/i>\u00a03.75e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0instead of\u00a0<\/span>TSR<\/span>\/Wizards of the Coast\/Hasbro. This is the system<\/span>\u00a0that, during the\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i>\u00a04e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0er<\/span>a,<\/span>\u00a0unseated\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i>\u00a0as the bestselling RPG in the English-centric world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What is Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Niobe?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clocking in at thirty-six pages long, this is a sourcebook to roleplay in the <\/span>setting for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Niobe<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Asunda<\/span>. If that world speaks to you, this book gives you the chance to play the game using the\u00a0<\/span>PF1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0ruleset\u00a0<\/span>presenting\u00a0<\/span>a range of powers and options. It\u2019s a good choice as the system is well-known and popular (likely to remain the\u00a0<\/span>PF<\/span><\/i>\u00a0standard for many players for\u00a0<\/span>many years to come<\/span>, at least until\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0makes all of the classes and favored options from\u00a0<\/span>1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0available for\u00a0<\/span>PF2e<\/span><\/i>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the book, pages three through five <\/span>of the sourcebook presents\u00a0<\/span>an overview of the setting including a timeline<\/span>\u00a0of its history<\/span>. Pages six through nine add races to the game including\u00a0<\/span>Esufey<\/span>\u00a0(elf-like elemental fey),\u00a0<\/span>Galemren<\/span>\u00a0(a variation of magical nomadic elves), Sin-<\/span>Galemren<\/span>\u00a0(akin to half-elves), and\u00a0<\/span>Grachukk<\/span>\u00a0(something like orcs). There\u2019s a new class, the\u00a0<\/span>Omdura<\/span>, a\u00a0<\/span>shaman-like<\/span>\u00a0variant. There are two archetypes for the\u00a0<\/span>Omdura<\/span>, and one for the Ranger, seventeen feats, six magic items, and four new monsters. Pages twenty-six through twenty-eight is the encounter, \u201cBattle for the Chosen.\u201d The book wraps with<\/span>\u00a0the NPC stat block for the central character,<\/span>\u00a0Niobe.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This can\u2019t be emphasized enough, this isn\u2019t the standard 3PP <\/span>Pathfinder 1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0supplement<\/span>\u00a0crafted by a third party<\/span>; this is from\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0directly. Luis\u00a0<\/span>Loza<\/span>, developer for\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0Inc., is one of the authors and development leads. Adam Daigle<\/span>, also<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0is the other development lead.\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>t does not get more official<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0than a book from\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>. But it\u2019s not just\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span> creators, it\u2019s also Sebastian A. Jones, Darrell May, Joshua Cozine, and Amandla Stenberg of Stranger Comics. This is a great marriage of official RPG and original comic creators.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I contacted Sebastian Jones of Niobe<\/em> to get his thoughts on the creative team: \u201c<\/span>Luis and the brilliant team at\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0have translated what Darrell and I have conjured into something epic and original! It is awesome to see items of power, like the Amulet of\u00a0<\/span>Arnuminel<\/span>, Niobe wears, which we now have in jewelry made by\u00a0<\/span>Badali<\/span>! The new feats, races, and the Shaman-like class of\u00a0<\/span>Omdura<\/span> will [give] fans a chance to experience something new and exciting. This comic was ideal for upgrading to\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0for several reasons, among them was the standout art. With\u00a0<\/span>art\u00a0<\/span>from some of\u00a0<\/span>comics<\/span>\u00a0top tale<\/span>nts working in their fantasy styles<\/span>, this series utilizes\u00a0<\/span>artists\u00a0<\/span>such as Ashley A. Woods, Hyoung Taek Name, Blond, Sheldon Mitchell, Jae Lee, and more to bring this vision to life. Their\u00a0<\/span>art<\/span>work is\u00a0<\/span>first rate (these\u00a0<\/span>artists are all in-demand from Marvel and DC Comics<\/span>)<\/span>. Since many of their images are covers, those can be parsed out over the course of\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span> sourcebook to bring life to the project. Combined with some panels from the comics to add action, this\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0book has\u00a0<\/span>beautiful art throughout<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

End of an Era<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I asked Sebastian Jones how he felt\u00a0<\/span>about\u00a0<\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0product being the unofficial capstone of\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder 1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0era<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Honestly, just being a part of the\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span> family is an honor and gamer\u2019s dream come true!\u00a0<\/span>I have been live action roleplaying and tabletop gaming for more than thirty years, using my fantasy world of\u00a0<\/span>Asunda<\/span>\u00a0as the backdrop. To see it come to life within such a brilliant system is incredible. Even with\u00a0<\/span>PF1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0shifting gears into\u00a0<\/span>PF2e<\/span><\/i>, this is the beginning for Niobe\u2019s world of\u00a0<\/span>Asunda<\/span>\u00a0to reach the entire RPG community, especially those who love this edition. With what we have in\u00a0<\/span>development<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>at<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>HBO<\/span><\/a>\u00a0will allow folks to read our comics, play the game, and watch it on the screen.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Pathfinder Comics from Stranger Comics?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As of this writing,\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0has licensed the\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0property to Dynamite Entertainment to handle their comics and graphic novels. This arrangement has existed for years. That said, for Dynamite, this is one of their properties and, while it has had writers from\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0on the books, it has not quite caught fire. Not to belittle Dynamite\u2019s work or ability, but Stranger Comics, home of\u00a0<\/span>Niobe<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and more fantasy comics, might be a viable home for\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0comics in the future. SC makes each new project its sole focus\u00a0<\/span>[See their\u00a0<\/span>newest Kickstarter<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for an example]\u00a0<\/span>and could give a\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder<\/span><\/i>\u00a0mini-series\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0level of production and attention t<\/span>hat would result in<\/span> an epic tale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Should I Play in\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Asunda<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you a fan of\u00a0<\/span>Niobe<\/span><\/i>? Are you a\u00a0<\/span>Pathfinder 1e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0fan? In either case, I say yes. This is a beautiful book that is official in every way: From\u00a0<\/span>Paizo<\/span>\u00a0and from Stranger Comics. It\u2019s authentic and a great addition to your\u00a0<\/span>PF1e<\/span><\/i> game. The art, the writing, the additions, this book is life. <\/span>If you\u2019re not already a fan, I suggest checking out the series and this sourcebook.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
