I don&#8217;t get to play games often, but this year was an exception. I played a great game of the new <em>One Ring Second Edition<\/em> and my usual <em>7th Sea<\/em> game\u00a0that went long into the night. But I think my favourite session (by a whisker) was running the new <i>ALIEN<\/i> game from Free League on Saturday night. I had three amazing players who were all great role players and just had a blast running it. The two-hour demo went on for three and if I&#8217;d not horribly slaughtered them all we&#8217;d probably still be playing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/b>: This is my first Gen Con that I didn\u2019t see Andy. We both write for <em>EN<\/em><em>\u00a0World<\/em> and he always has the best finds of the con, so missing him was a shame. It was my first time not purposely scheduling to play games with people I knew. It was my first time painting a mini that\u00a0I was really\u00a0proud of. It was my first time on a panel. And for the first time, I didn&#8217;t let imposter syndrome keep me from hanging out with colleagues I admire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: Only at a Gen Con convention game will you play with, and learn from, a writer for the game you\u2019re playing. I signed up for a <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/browse\/pub\/536\/Green-Ronin\/subcategory\/5710\/Dragon-Age?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dragon\u00a0Age<\/a><\/em><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> session. Jamie, who I had never met before, was there and the GM innocently let us know that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">she<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0had\u00a0written\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Dragon\u00a0Age\u00a0RPG<\/em>. So, when I flubbed the history of the setting and the engine, it was extra embarrassing! This year I got to walk this hall with a few of them. But the best moment for me was when fans came up and started to tell me their favorite parts in <em>The Dread House<\/em> and <em>The Grande Temple of Jing<\/em>. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To know people actually\u00a0read and play the material I work so hard on is a blessing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: My buddy, Leland, and I were walking over to say hi to Danny at his booth as he was leaving. Instead of cutting our visit short, he asked us to walk with him as he did something incredibly\u00a0interesting, he took us on a publisher art hunt. Together, we toured artist alley making contacts with artists for his next project, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Denoa<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and learning how to be a publisher. This was the very first Gen Con for all three of these\u00a0people. It was incredibly\u00a0gratifying to introduce three friends to Gen Con and help make sure they had a fantastic first experience. My first game was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/product\/276289\/Heroic-Dark-Early-Edition?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Heroic\u00a0Dark<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0run\u00a0by\u00a0its\u00a0creator,\u00a0Dustin\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DePenning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/product\/203928\/Synthicide-RPG?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Synthicide<\/em><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Sitting behind me was Craig Campbell as he ran a session of his award-winning (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bamfsies.blogspot.com\/2019\/02\/2018-bamfsies-awards-announced.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2018\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">BAMFsie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Award<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/browse\/pub\/10416\/NerdBurger-Games\/subcategory\/31078\/CAPERS?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">CAPERS<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Back in Atlanta, Craig and I game together so it was fun to run into him at the beginning of the con. I often dread going until I&#8217;m on my way, largely because I&#8217;m an introvert and the show is profoundly tiring for me, but every year I come home with new friends, new ideas, and amazing new experiences to draw from. As an example, from this year&#8217;s show, I didn&#8217;t realize initially that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eggertspiele.com\/en\/home\/87-era-medieval-age-pre-order-4061897501403.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Era<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0[a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">boardgame<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0advertised as \u201cThe world\u2019s first Roll &amp; Build game! In\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Era\u00a0&#8211; Medieval Age<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, each player rules over their domain.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With every roll of the dice, players will continue to build their city while trying to avoid extortion, scorched earth, and disease!\u201d] was originally conceived as a roll and write. After Alex mentioned that, I was suddenly seeing new ways to develop games that\u00a0I hadn&#8217;t even considered before. Every year I find countless little eye openers like this, and it makes every step of an otherwise grueling experience for a person who values solitude absolutely\u00a0worthwhile.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Patrick set up my interview with Crafty Games\u2019 Alex Flagg. The energy, the people and the sheer creative inspiration has made the pain in my feet and back well worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights would have to include meeting some of our Kickstarter backers at the booth. Watching people who had worked very hard get recognized for their efforts and win ENnie Awards. Spending time with the wonderful people at Chaosium and the HP Lovecraft Historic Society. Making new friends and finding my new home, Gen Con.<\/p>\n<p><b>Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/b>:\u00a0Chaosium Inc\u2019s VP, Michael O\u2019Brien, invited me to conduct a pair of interviews at their booth looking at third party <em>Call of Cthulhu<\/em> props by companies like Type 40. I was able to interview Allan about the artifacts and memorabilia he crafts for the game. My brother in dice, Eric Bloat, was also a part of the group, which made it even more special.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Egg\u2019s\u00a0Note<\/b>:\u00a0At\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.originsgamefair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Origins\u00a0Game\u00a0Fair\u00a02019<\/a>, I was supposed to play in a game with Justin but he couldn\u2019t make that con. I meant to say hi to him and Eric Bloat at Gen Con, but I never found the time to meet with them. Being a fan of RPGs and games of all types, it made sense to make the pilgrimage from Atlanta in hopes of learning what it takes to make this dream happen.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The entire experience was simply\u00a0a fun and engaging four days, as advertised. While I had a lot of great gameplay and new experiences throughout, my favorite memory of the convention was talking to some first-time creators at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.igdnonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Indie Game Developer Network<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0booth just before leaving on Sunday.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It was near the end of the convention, and I recall how inviting the team was there when I asked for help in finding a story-based game system to read and learn from as a new game creator.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They gave me several great suggestions and were quite excited to hear I wanted to make my own\u00a0game and were knowledgeable about a couple of story games that piqued my interest,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/product\/203807\/Home-by-Dark?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Home by Dark<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by Jason Oslan and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/product\/243470\/ReMemorex?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rememorex<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0published by Eschaton Media.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As an independent creative myself, I know the importance of supporting first-time creators and sharing their voice, and to see many titles the IDGA booth represented, and just how supportive the people were there, it made me feel like I could be a part of their community without question.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They were very generous with their time and experiences and gave some suggestions of resources to get started.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I ended up buying both games,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and also<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0picked up their recommendation of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivethrurpg.com\/browse\/pub\/4329\/Modiphius\/subcategory\/29868\/Legacy-Life-Among-the-Ruins?affiliate_id=814082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Legacy: Life Among the Ruins<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by Jay Iles\u00a0as well.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They shared that buying the games directly from the via IGDA and at conventions like Gen Con allowed for creators and developers to gain substantially more return of their game&#8217;s investments by getting them here, rather than ordering online as I typically do with a lot of my other game purchases.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was exactly the type of\u00a0feedback and camaraderie I was hoping to find at the show when I purchased my badge, and I was not disappointed.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I plan to apply for IGDN membership and continue my efforts to create a\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sorghum &amp; Spear<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0tabletop game, in part to the great experience I had with the team at IGDN.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here&#8217;s to having a prototype to share for next year&#8217;s event!\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Egg\u2019s Note<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dedren<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is an Atlanta friend and like many of my Atlanta friends, I see them at cons more than at home because traffic in Atlanta is&#8230; well, you know the hometown traffic song and dance. It&#8217;s a great time and you&#8217;re likely to make a list of new gamer friends.
