From Wednesday June 12<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0to Sunday June 16<\/span>th<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Origins Game Fair<\/span><\/a> descended on Columbus, Ohio. With an attendance of over 20,000 gamers and 250 vendors, this was the 4<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0largest\u00a0<\/span>exclusively\u00a0<\/span>tabletop gaming convention in the\u00a0<\/span>English-centric world and Germany (<\/span>Internationale<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Spieltage<\/span>\u00a0SPIEL\/Essen Game Fair)\u00a0<\/span>and second<\/span> largest in North America. As my second year attending, it was an opportunity to game, meet creators, and conduct interviews. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This convention runs Wednesday to Sunday for games, Thursday to Sunday for the dealer\u2019s hall in a fair-sized convention center with an attached food court and Hyatt. If you\u2019re staying at the Hyatt or Drury Inn (also linked to the convention center) getting to <\/span>and from\u00a0<\/span>the games is a dream. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My plan for cons is always the same, I seek out\u00a0some games, I both seek and get sought out\u00a0for interviews\/reviews (<\/span>my review<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>The North Sea Epilogues RPG<\/span><\/i><\/a> is a direct result of attending Origins)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and build from\u00a0<\/span>there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>That plan has yet to fail on delivering <\/span>a fun convention.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A caveat.<\/em> I’ve read multiple <\/span>opinion<\/span>s that Origins, UK EXPO, and Gen Con are too big\/crowded for comfort. For my money, I come from comic conventions that have six figures worth of attendees, so I find Gen Con well-managed and Origins like my high school gaming sessions it\u2019s so intimidate. So, if reading about 20,000 people at a convention center for five days sounds overwhelming to you, I <\/span>appreciate that there is a concern that makes that uncomfortable for you and I respect that. That said, I am interested in learning what size convention (headcount) feels right for you. I’d love for you to comment below as <\/span>I\u2019m genuinely interested in what others feel is a fun size? <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Wednesday June 12<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0led with getting\u00a0<\/span>my\u00a0<\/span>badge and\u00a0<\/span>event\u00a0<\/span>tickets then off to the first game:\u00a0<\/span>Fiasco: To Err is Transhuman<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0with its\u00a0<\/span>co-<\/span>author, Cameron Parkinson. If you\u2019ve never played\u00a0<\/span>Fiasco<\/span><\/i><\/a>, it\u2019s gaming by way of committee. That sounds bad, but committees aren\u2019t an innately negative concept, they\u2019re an option to express\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0our thoughts and allow participation at a level each member is comfortable with.\u00a0<\/span>Fiasco<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is that\u00a0<\/span>concept<\/span> governed by 2d6s. How the system works is, more or less, you create everything on the fly. It\u2019s intended to play out a Cohen Brother\u2019s movie that will be as comedic as your table. Generated through random tables that ask each player to pick a character direction\/motivation as a foundation. While dice light, the game is deep on roleplaying as we journeyed through 25 PC-generated scenes in under four hours (including rules explanation and character generation). Where this system shone was player management. Eight players and a GM (the scenario\u2019s writer) can be too much for many games leaving players with so much time between \u201con-camera\u201d moments that they lose interest. Instead, this RPG keeps the camera moving and allows players to burst into (or be pulled into) scenes so they were better engaged. <\/span>I<\/span>t felt like a party RPG, which few games do. Highly recommended for players looking for an easy, funny interaction.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Up next was\u00a0<\/span>Onyx<\/span>\u00a0Path Publishing\u2019s version of\u00a0<\/span>Vampire: The Masquerade,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Vampire: The Requiem<\/span><\/i><\/a>. What separates the two versions of this game? <\/span>Modestly v<\/span>aried\u00a0<\/span>meta-tales<\/span> and using the World of Darkness<\/em> system versus the <\/span>Chronicle of Darkness\/New World of Darkness<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system that better integrates\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the [MONSTER]: The [NOUN] RPGs. <\/span>CoD<\/span><\/i>\u00a0uses d10 dice pools where 8s, 9s, and 10s are successes and 10s explode. We were in the Dark Ages campaign (1300s Madrid). Since it was a con game, the party diabolized two vampires\u00a0<\/span>–\u00a0<\/span>when one vampire eats another<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which is\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0crime among vampires<\/span>… but there\u2019s no punishment for doing it in a one-shot. How do you know you\u2019re playing a con game of Vampire? Someone eats a\u00a0<\/span>vampire.\u00a0<\/span><<\/span>Rimshot… Crickets<\/span><\/i>><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another caveat, at this session, I reconnected with the GM and players from our VtR<\/em> session at Origins 2018. While not planned, it was a nice bit of gamer continuity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The next morning, I played\u00a0<\/span>Legacy: Life Among the Ruins<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>Powered by the Apocalypse<\/span><\/i>\u00a0RPG\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>PbtA<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>run through Games On-Demand<\/span>, a group that offers a great selection of independent RPGs<\/span>. If you don\u2019t know the\u00a0<\/span>Powered by the Apocalypse<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system, here\u2019s the short version: for every action you roll 2d6 plus a stat and on a 10+, you succeed, on a 7 to 9, you succeed with a complication, and less than 7 gives the GM a move.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This\u00a0<\/span>variation of the\u00a0<\/span>PbtA<\/span><\/i>\u00a0s<\/span>ystem s<\/span>witches between modes as you play your POV PC then\u00a0<\/span>zoom out to your<\/span>\u00a0extended family<\/span>. Our single session covered\u00a0<\/span>decades of\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>post\u00a0post-apocalypse world. This is a narrative RPG<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0so the players do as much world building as the GM. You build your character, family, moves, world map\/setting, and the story before you start playing. There\u2019s a lot of\u00a0<\/span>development\u00a0<\/span>to start but when the game begins, you know the setup. The roleplaying\u00a0<\/span>digs into select moments\u00a0<\/span>across the decades.\u00a0<\/span>It’s an interesting idea that gives you a variety of options. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That afternoon I played my second\u00a0<\/span>tabletop RPG<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Fallout\u00a0<\/span><\/i>ever. The first time I played (<\/span>at Origins 2018<\/span><\/a>) was a hack using the\u00a0<\/span>Cortex<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system<\/span><\/a>. For this one, it was another system hack, in this case, the <\/span>World of Darkness<\/span><\/i>. Neither were the\u00a0<\/span>official version from\u00a0<\/span>Modiphius<\/span>\u00a0Entertainment<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that I\u2019ll be reviewing for\u00a0<\/span>my\u00a0<\/span>RPG ADAPTATIONS<\/span><\/i>\u00a0column here on d20 Radio<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>Modiphius<\/span>\u2019 version came out after the con.)\u00a0<\/span>For\u00a0<\/span>Fallout:\u00a0<\/span><\/i>WoD<\/span><\/i>, I really\u00a0wanted to attend because one of the players from the\u00a0<\/span>Fallout: Cortex<\/span><\/i>\u00a0session I played\u00a0<\/span>last year wrote and\u00a0<\/span>ran this one<\/span>. Considering how much I loved\u00a0<\/span>Fallout: Cortex<\/span><\/i>, this was a must-do.\u00a0<\/span>The world was fully\u00a0<\/span>Fallout<\/span><\/i>, while the system had the strengths and weaknesses of\u00a0<\/span>WoD<\/span><\/i> being used for a military RPG, so not perfect but familiar and easy to get into. One of the highlights of the game was the GM was cosplaying as a soldier from the world, so it set the mood. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

F<\/span>or F<\/span>riday<\/span>, I wanted to volunteer and give something back to gaming and, as luck would have it,\u00a0<\/span>ENnie<\/span> Award-winning blogger\/creator, Wen Reischl, put out an open call to volunteer with <\/span>Tabletop Gaymers<\/span><\/a>. Tabletop\u00a0<\/span>Gaymers<\/span> is a \u201cnonprofit organization whose mission is to address homophobia in the tabletop gaming community by providing educational, social, and networking opportunities for LGBTQ+ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer\/Questioning) \u201cgaymers\u201d and allies.\u201d I spent an hour at their table passing out ribbons, spreading an inclusive message, and having fun. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After that, it was back to gaming, this time playing\u00a0<\/span>Edge of the Frontier<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a Wild West setup that uses the\u00a0<\/span>Genesys<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0engine\u00a0<\/span>which is the core of the\u00a0<\/span>current\u00a0<\/span>Star Wars RPG<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(expertly covered by the\u00a0<\/span>Order 66<\/span><\/i>\u00a0podcast<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ll<\/span>\u00a0forgo\u00a0<\/span>explaining\u00a0<\/span>the engine\u00a0<\/span>since\u00a0<\/span>Order 66<\/span><\/i>\u00a0does a superb job of covering it, instead let me<\/span> share this, the GM weaved an interesting tale that made the most of the game\u2019s options. [***SPOILERS***] <\/span>We were in the Wild West with idiosyncratic NPCs as we investigated a murder. This led to some personal discoveries as we realized we were robots, and this was a version of\u00a0<\/span>West World<\/span><\/i>. This session managed an intricate story and a solid demonstration of the\u00a0<\/span>Genesys<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After that I interviewed Daniel Fox, Executive Creative Director at Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU) and creator of the\u00a0<\/span>ZWEIH\u00c4NDER RPG<\/span><\/i><\/a>. We talked about the full range of\u00a0<\/span>ZWEIH\u00c4NDER<\/span><\/i> and what AMU is looking for in games as it expands its library. Following that, I interviewed Malcolm Sheppard, developer-at-large at Green Ronin Publishing, and <\/span>Will Sobel, sales bard at Green Ronin Publishing, about everything\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE: Threefold<\/span><\/i><\/a>, their newest setting, and <\/span>ORK! 2nd Edition<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saturday\u00a0<\/span>started with a miniatures monster hunt game using a variant of <\/span>D&D 3.5e<\/span><\/i> rules (It was fun even if I was eliminated early). Then an interview <\/span>with Steve Jackson Games\u2019 CEO, Phil Reed, about everything they\u2019re manufacturing as well as all things\u00a0<\/span>The Fantasy Trip<\/span><\/i><\/a>. I wrapped up my interviews by talking with T.S. Luikart,\u00a0<\/span>Cubicle 7<\/span><\/a>\u00a0designer and the Fourth Marshall of the\u00a0<\/span>Riddermark<\/span>. Lots about their\u00a0<\/span>Warhammer<\/span><\/i>\u00a0games and\u00a0<\/span>The One Ring 2e<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Demon: The Descent<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span><\/i>hronicles\u00a0<\/span><\/i>o<\/span><\/i>f\u00a0<\/span><\/i>D<\/span><\/i>arkness<\/span><\/i> RPG published by Onyx Path Publishing. <\/span>A little history, I grew up in the town next to Stone Mountain, Georgia, the location of White Wolf during their heyday. As such, White Wolf games played an outsized part during my RPG youth (one of my buddies interned with WW so he had a lot of their products). Being level, despite my love of White Wolf, I had low expectations for any game named\u00a0<\/span>Demon<\/span><\/i>, whether \u201c<\/span>The Fallen<\/span><\/i>\u201d for\u00a0<\/span>WoD<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or \u201c<\/span>The Decent<\/span><\/i>\u201d for\u00a0<\/span>CoD<\/span><\/i>. I read\u00a0<\/span>DtF<\/span><\/i> back in the day and its use of Judeo-Christian beliefs always felt edgy for the sake of edginess to me. Because of that, I thought I\u2019d find <\/span>DtD<\/span><\/i> over-the-top and something I\u2019d only do the once. I could not have been more wrong. In <\/span>DtD<\/span><\/i> you play something akin to spies fighting against the God-Machine in a world of its making. For the adventure, we were in 1961 West Berlin as the USA and USSR brace for nuclear war, an event that may have been the God-Machine\u2019s attempt at ending existence. It was an excellent session and system that really shined, and we played it well past our cutoff at 11 (running to midnight or thereabouts), it was that engaging. Without a doubt, the best game of the con and that\u2019s saying a lot. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Sunday was a short day as\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>\u00a0had to get home and it was just a quick demo of\u00a0<\/span>Shadowrun 6e<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>A single combat that used pools of d6s (though fewer than my prior experiences with\u00a0<\/span>Shadowrun<\/span><\/i>). A solid demo that utilized character sheets and cards in the gameplay. The game looked like a step up from\u00a0<\/span>Shadowrun 5e<\/span><\/i> and I’m eager to see the full rollout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My second\u00a0<\/span>Origins Game Fair<\/span><\/a>\u00a0was a success with more fun at the gaming tables and more opportunity to meet the creators. I had a chance to volunteer, pick up some fantastic games, play a few I really\u00a0wanted to, and talk with some of the people that make these games happen. It was a lovely experience and I\u2019m looking forward to returning in 2020.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
