\"\"<\/a>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i>\u00a0meets\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>\u00a0in this\u00a0<\/span>week\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>RPG ADAPTATIONS<\/span><\/i>. In this column, I review p<\/span>opular p<\/span>roperties converted to tabletop roleplaying games and,\u00a0<\/span>with this piece<\/span>, I share my thoughts on Alex Raymond\u2019s classic character,\u00a0<\/span>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i>, and his<\/span>\u00a0pulp science-fiction fantasy space action\u00a0<\/span>universe\u00a0<\/span>married to the\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i> RPG\u00a0<\/span><\/i>system<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wh<\/span><\/b>o is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know how much value there is in explaining\u00a0<\/span>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i> since he\u2019s been around since 1934, featured in a movie, serials, cartoons, TV series, comic books, novels<\/span>, and a comic strip<\/span>. He\u2019s a foundational element of sci-fi and a part of popular culture<\/span> that led to a Queen song that is so odd, it\u2019s memorable in the way many Queen songs are odd and memorable<\/span>. But, for this column, let\u2019s spin out a few words about the <\/span>property\u2019s plot<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Earth is threatened by the planet Mongo, Dr. Hans <\/span>Zarkov<\/span> uses<\/span>\u00a0h<\/span>is rocket ship and forces Flash Gordon, a Yale University graduate and polo player, and Dale Arden, originally a 1930s damsel in distress (generally,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>early\u00a0<\/span>stories\u00a0<\/span>did\u00a0<\/span>not\u00a0<\/span>offer\u00a0<\/span>a forward-facing view of women), to join him in his efforts to stop the clash of planets. This leads to their encounter with Mongo\u2019s evil ruler, Ming the Merciless. Mongo is a many-peopled world\u00a0<\/span>in various states of rebellion against Ming, which prompts<\/span> a variety of adventures between there and Earth and the rest of space. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What About the Sexist and Racist Origins of the Characters?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s put\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the cards on the table: These characters were created in the 1930s and\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0shows in the first versions of the characters<\/span>. Dale is a sexist stereotype and Ming is rooted in the era\u2019s racism<\/span>\u00a0with his appearance\u00a0<\/span>based on the\u00a0<\/span>Yellow Peril<\/span><\/a>\u00a0style of artwork.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That said, the<\/span> property has evolved to be more in line with today\u2019s thoughts. This is not just the RPG; this is the property <\/span>as a whole\u00a0as<\/span> it has taken on a modern outlook on gender, race, and other aspects of this setting. For your game, there\u2019s zero need to bring <\/span>any of the ills\u00a0<\/span>born of the original\u00a0<\/span>era to your gaming table. In the RPG, Ming no longer has a Yellow Peril undertone<\/span>\u00a0and Dale\u00a0is a fully realized character\u00a0in keeping with the respect and equality that everyone deserves.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What\u00a0<\/span><\/b>is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i><\/b>?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer to that question is colored by which edition you\u2019re considering. For this RPG, that\u2019s hard to pinpoint as this game straddles two editions of <\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>. Specifically,\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer’s Edition<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE)<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>The Savage World of Flash Gordon\u00a0<\/span><\/i>holds an interesting space in gaming history as it was the testing ground for several of the rules for the revision of the\u00a0<\/span>Deluxe Explorer\u2019s Edition<\/span><\/i>\u00a0over to the\u00a0<\/span>SWADE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0version. When playing it, you can feel both editions in its DNA. The upside to this is it works with the new\u00a0<\/span>SWADE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0rules that dropped within a year of\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0RPG coming out.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking a more generalized view of\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>, the\u00a0<\/span>hallmarks of the gaming engine\u00a0<\/span>include combat initiative\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>u<\/span>tiliz<\/span>es a standard deck of playing cards including the jokers, skill-based dice pools, exploding dice (re-roll\u00a0<\/span>crits<\/span> and add the results), bennies (points you gain for roleplaying to spend for important moments in the game), and catapult-loads of <\/span>combat<\/span>. That\u2019s the\u00a0<\/span>signature element of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>, the action movie\u00a0<\/span>le<\/span>v<\/span>els of adventure that it brings to your gaming table<\/span>. This is a game that lets action speak\u00a0<\/span>loud and clear as c<\/span>ombat cracks along at a good piece while maintaining crunch and its\u00a0<\/span>simulationist<\/span>\u00a0origins.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gen Con 2018<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jonathan Thompson of\u00a0<\/span>Battlefield Press<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>suggested that I\u00a0<\/span>try out\u00a0<\/span>The Savage World of Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>Gen Con<\/span><\/a>\u00a02018<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I followed his advice and had an amazing experience (thanks, Jonathan). <\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>attended the session<\/span>\u00a0with my author buddy,\u00a0<\/span>John McGuire<\/span><\/a>. John has a secret superpower<\/span>: Doing<\/span>\u00a0a voice that\u00a0is somewhere between Vaudeville and a 1940s\u00a0<\/span>Movietone<\/span>\u00a0newsreel. News in\u00a0<\/span>the McGuire\u00a0<\/span>household is always\u00a0<\/span>peppy<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>For this game, he played a mad scientist whose every word was mid-Atlantic accent discussions of why we were winning against Ming\u2019s diabolical forces. The force of that character\u2019s personality made the gam<\/span>e memorable and helped me to fall in love\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>The Savage World of Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I\u00a0<\/span>doubt<\/span>\u00a0he\u2019d remember, Scott Woodard, writer of the\u00a0<\/span>Flash Gordon RPG<\/span><\/i>, came to\u00a0<\/span>audit\u00a0<\/span>our<\/span>\u00a0gaming session\u00a0<\/span>and see firsthand\u00a0<\/span>how the adventure was going<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>He spoke with the GM\u00a0<\/span>to get feedback on the game.<\/span> Knowing that our session was viewed, to a degree, as a litmus test for how well the game would be received made the experience even more memorable. I left the table with an extremely favorable view of both the setting and the system, and marked it as one of the best con games I\u2019d ever played. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>The Savage World of Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

192 pages of Flash Gordon<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Ming, Mongo, and\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0that universe\u00a0<\/span>as scoped from your gaming table. <\/span>If you know\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>, you\u2019ll find rules meant to take the\u00a0<\/span>Deluxe Explorer\u2019s Edition<\/span><\/i>\u00a0up to the level of the\u00a0<\/span>SWADE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0version. If you know\u00a0<\/span>SWADE<\/span><\/i>, you\u2019re ready to game this. For the setting there\u2019s new powers, races, gear, great rocket ships built of retro goodness, and, of course, Edges and Hindrances. Another area where this book is a winner is Mongo. They offer a great gazetteer of the world making uses of the new races, the deep history of the setting, the NPCs, and unique beasts. With that section, you can easily recreate the feeling of your favorite version of <\/span>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be obvious to some, but to play, you\u2019ll need a copy of the\u00a0<\/span>SWADE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0rules. That\u2019s something to keep in mind if you decide to\u00a0pick up the game.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Savage Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>G<\/span><\/b>ood\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Combination<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking for the right\u00a0<\/span>fusion\u00a0<\/span>of a pulp world and a pulpy system?<\/span>\u00a0This is one of the better options available. Something about\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>\u00a0feels like it was thought up during the Golden Age of Science Fiction or the Golden Age of Comics. While it\u2019s a great medium crunch,\u00a0<\/span>simulationist<\/span>\u00a0system,\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>\u00a0manages to spark wonder like a product from another era. That said, it\u2019s from today and has a modern edge to it\u00a0as well. Bringing in\u00a0<\/span>Flash Gordon<\/span><\/i> produces a great gaming experience. It\u2019s the perfect meeting of setting and engine<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>So, Should\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I\u00a0<\/span><\/b>P<\/span><\/b>lay?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My first kiss with\u00a0<\/span>Origins Award-nominated\u00a0<\/span>The Savage World of Flash Gordon\u00a0<\/span><\/i>was Gen Con, but it was not my last date with Mango.\u00a0<\/span>I recommend this game for those that\u00a0love\u00a0<\/span>Flash Gordon. <\/span><\/i>I<\/span>t\u2019s worth your time. For those that want a pulp sci-fi fantasy setting for <\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i>, this one is ready to meet your retro needs. This game offers the best version of a historic property matched to a system that explodes with action to create a great time. Especially if one of the players adds that 1940s newsreel voice!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
