In\u00a0<\/span>RPG ADAPTATIONS<\/span><\/i>,<\/span>\u00a0I review\u00a0<\/span>media\u00a0<\/span>properties adapted to tabletop roleplaying games like Green Ronin Publishing\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>World of Lazarus for Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0based on Greg\u00a0<\/span>Rucka<\/span>\u00a0and Michael Lark\u2019s Image comic book series,\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i><\/a>. Using the\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system, this RPG allows you to play as, for, or against\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a01% in\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0dystopian near-future<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For those not familiar with\u00a0<\/span>the comic\u00a0<\/span>or the RPG system, let\u2019s break those down.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Lazarus<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This explanation will sound trite<\/span>, however<\/span>\u00a0it\u2019s anything but. The system didn\u2019t fail, it was foreclosed on\u00a0<\/span>when<\/span>\u00a0the hyper-wealthy bought it all. Sixteen families own everything, the sea, land, air, and you. In their neo-feudalistic system, if you\u2019re not a member of one of the top sixteen families, your best hope is to be elevated to a Serf, a paid servant of your ruling family. Below Serfs, everyone\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>considered, and dubbed, Waste, the masses living off the scraps of the world as they hope to be\u00a0<\/span>elevated or<\/span> birth the next generation of Serfs.<\/span><\/p>\n

You remember when \u201cThe 1%\u201d was the phrase that pays? Before someone did the math and realized that 1% represented over 3,000,000 souls in the US alone.\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s a lot of folks to hate, e<\/span>specially when they meant The Billionaires (600 in the US, 2,200 worldwide)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0For a cast of villains, that\u2019s much more manageable. In\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>, the world has fallen to the highest of those ultra-rich. A handful of families and oligarchies run the world and the epitome \u201cLazarus\u201d is part of their control apparatus, a single genetically-enhanced super soldier each family fields to be their\u00a0<\/span>primary\u00a0<\/span>bodyguard, expert assassin, and command their militaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The comic follows Forever Carlyle, a Lazarus loyal to her family<\/span>\u00a0as they\u00a0<\/span>fight\u00a0<\/span>among themselves and other families\u00a0<\/span>to control the destiny of the world. The Carlyle family administers the US from the Mississippi River\u00a0<\/span>to the Pacific<\/span> and Canada from Ontario\/Manitoba west. The story is about Forever learning who she is among a family of financial monsters and defining what family means to her. <\/span>By\u00a0Greg\u00a0<\/span>Rucka<\/span>\u00a0(writer) and Michael Lark (artist) a<\/span>t\u00a0<\/span>Image Comics<\/span><\/a>, the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>series is a dark r<\/span>ead with a strong female lead thanks to\u00a0<\/span>Rucka\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>words\u00a0<\/span>atop\u00a0<\/span>some of Lark\u2019s best artwork.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

W<\/span><\/b>hat is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0In 2010, Green Ronin Publishing adapted the\u00a0<\/span>Dragon Age<\/span><\/i>\u00a0video game franchise to tabletop RPG. The engine that TTRPG\u00a0<\/span>u<\/span>tilized<\/span>\u00a0became known as the\u00a0<\/span>AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system and has been used in a variety of Green Ronin games including\u00a0<\/span>Fantasy AGE, Blue Rose, The Expanse RPG,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and, of course,\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system is a\u00a0<\/span>medium-crunch\u00a0<\/span>simulationist<\/span>\u00a0RPG<\/span>\u00a0akin to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i>\u00a0in which you have a character with Abilities that improve their attack, their crafts<\/span>\/skills<\/span>, their Defense (like Armor Class), and Health (Hit Points). My overview might\u00a0<\/span>make the game sound pedestrian\u00a0<\/span>but there<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s a secret sauce to this system, the Stunt Die. For every action, you roll 3d6 with one of the dies being visually distinct, which is called the Stunt Die. If you succeed in your roll and any two dice come up with the same number, you read the Stunt Die to see how many Stunt Points you have. There\u2019s a chart of options to buy with those points to impact this round of combat\/skill check\/social interaction.\u00a0<\/span>This replaces double damage with options that make your character a bit\u00a0more unique.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With each iteration of the\u00a0<\/span>AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system, the engine is adapted to the world. While\u00a0<\/span>Dragon Age<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Fantasy AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0are class-based a la<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is ability-based\u00a0so it feels more in-line with the \u201creal\u201d world. The stunts are different as is how the game interacts with its setting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>What is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>The World of Lazarus: A Modern AGE Campaign Setting<\/span><\/i><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0This 128-page\u00a0<\/span>hardcover<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>PDF<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>\u00a0written by Crystal Fraiser, brings the comic\u2019s setting to your tabletop using the\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system. Adventure-wise, this combination lets you expand on the world by looking at the other families (the comics focuses on one of the sixteen families) and how they run their territories. While you do not need a command of the comics to play, you will need both the\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE Basic Rulebook<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>The World of Lazarus: A Modern AGE Campaign Setting<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to enjoy th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0tabletop experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Existing in<\/span>\u00a0the near-future, most of the action and physics are grounded in our modern-day mundanity<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>save for the Lazarus and certain genetic enhancements such as the Carlyle\u2019s longevity. That is to say, unless you\u2019re a Lazarus, or facing off against one, you will play and encounter \u201cnormal\u201d humans with weapons of the near-future (better rifles and drones), not Superman\u00a0and the like.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The World of Lazarus: A Modern AGE Campaign Setting<\/span><\/i>\u00a0came out in 2018 and\u00a0<\/span>shared a piece of information that was\u00a0helpful for this review and will assist\u00a0<\/span>future readers. It says exactly when the book was written, after <\/span>Lazarus\u00a0<\/span><\/i>#<\/span><\/i>27<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(of 28 issues from the first volume) and after the first\u00a0<\/span>2<\/span>\u00a0(of\u00a0<\/span>3<\/span>, so far)\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus Sourcebooks<\/span><\/i>. If you\u2019re a fan of the comic and want to know whe<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0th<\/span>e material in the RPG<\/span>\u00a0runs up to, this pinpoint<\/span>s\u00a0the cutoff.\u00a0<\/span>Which brings us to the best part of this crossover: It crosses both ways. This is not a one-and-done campaign sourcebook, instead,\u00a0<\/span>The World of Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is expand<\/span>ed on\u00a0<\/span>every quarter in the comics. Green Ronin has a hardcover full of information for your table and Image Comics\u2019\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus Risen #1<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>#2<\/span><\/i>\u00a0drops this month)\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>The World of Lazarus\u00a0<\/span><\/i>RPG information in the back, both sources written by Crystal Fraiser. It\u2019s an excellent bit of cross-promotion and an incentive for fans of the RPG to\u00a0<\/span>keep up on\u00a0<\/span>the comic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Is\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Lazarus AGE<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0a good fit?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system is designed to input and handle a<\/span>ny contemporary<\/span>\u00a0setting as magical as\u00a0<\/span>Harry Potter<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or as militant as\u00a0<\/span>John Wick<\/span><\/i>\u00a0or as horrific as\u00a0<\/span>Resident Evil<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u00a0combines James Bond, super soldiers, and any Vietnam War movie creating something darker than its parts. The\u00a0<\/span>richest families<\/span>\u00a0lead lives that are\u00a0unimaginable while the Waste population subsist on handouts.\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u00a0jumps between high action, policy positions, blackmail, and spying in a sci-fi dystopian world<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>went all-in on<\/span>\u00a0the pot\u00a0<\/span>but folded their hand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is an ideal fit for the\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0system. Its population of normal humans, some augmented individuals, and near-future tech let the\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>cruise through the environment it was designed for<\/span>. Where\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE<\/span><\/i>\u00a0best meets\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is its Stunt Die options. Combat Stunts perfectly match this world of\u00a0<\/span>firefights<\/span>\u00a0that lead to unexpected moments. Even more immersive, there are Social Stunts for\u00a0<\/span>a setting built as much of\u00a0<\/span>blood<\/span>\u00a0as\u00a0<\/span>negotiations and contracts. The ability to make social rolls and include stunts mimics\u00a0<\/span>Rucka<\/span>\u00a0and Lark\u2019s world splendidly.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Lazarus<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0so why should I play?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>\u00a0view that the dystopian future will be pragmatic<\/span>\u00a0is easy to build upon<\/span>. The\u00a0<\/span>corporation\u00a0<\/span>is easy to hate because it\u2019s apathetic\u00a0<\/span>with every decision being driven by how it impacts\u00a0<\/span>the bottom line. This contrasts with<\/span>, say,\u00a0<\/span>an<\/span>\u00a080s dystopian tale where\u00a0<\/span>the corporation is actively evil and\u00a0<\/span>wants to\u00a0<\/span>blow up the world. It\u2019s easier to grasp the narrative that you are being downsized for improved profits than you are being executed to bring a dark\u00a0<\/span>god into this world because someone thought\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span><\/i>\u00a0would make things better.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Beyond\u00a0<\/span>Lazarus<\/span><\/i>, the system is superb for creating a near-future dystopia. Your character is mortal\u00a0and the enemy has deadly weapons. Stunts add to the fun of gameplay as you work through the tale and faceoff against the evils of corporate America. Since\u00a0<\/span>stunts are not exclusive to\u00a0<\/span>combat, roleplaying scenes include dice for effect. If you\u2019re looking for a dramatic, near-future action-adventure with something for every type of player, Green Ronin Publishing\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Modern AGE Basic Rulebook<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>World of Lazarus for Modern AGE\u00a0<\/span><\/i>fits the bill.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
