T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">RPG<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> digs in deeper, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dialing into <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fantastic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">day-to-day\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the Vikings as y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our signature Viking\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to make\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">way in a harsh world<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Rules light and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tattoo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed in stylized art, this RPG offers a sanitized vision of the Vikings that focuses less on the lawlessness of their behavior and more on the romanticized notions of what they were. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gameplay<\/span><\/b><span id=\"selectionBoundary_1563281507782_35522881832757736\" class=\"rangySelectionBoundary\" style=\"line-height: 0; display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To start the game, p<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">layers (or the GM) create the clan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">moniker<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, history, symbol, conflicts, allies, and enemies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; their character<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hail\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This gives\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your table a great deal of say o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n the atmosphere of the world you\u2019ll play in. Is your tribe prosperous? Mercenaries? Farmers? Sailors? Happy with t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heir jarl<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(leader)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">? This option gives the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">players\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the chance to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leave <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fingerprints on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">setting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your vehicle for the game, you<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r character<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0more flavor than crunchy stats. Starting at character creation, many of the developments are generated through descriptions and questions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instead of hard numeric<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> values. You begin with your name and appearance before choosing a Path (class). While in many RPGs the class would carry a great deal of weight for the game, this RPG is narrative with limited mechanical differences between<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, say,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Path of the Berserker and the Path of the Healer. In\u00a0<\/span><i>D&amp;D<\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, one would be the frontline of combat while the other would be the ambulance. Here, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">either<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> could <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">charge\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">through the door<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0first<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f your character follows the Path of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Healer then their Path perk is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the ability, during downtime, to heal two injuries instead of one. Since <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is used during<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0downtime<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to double healing instead of used in <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">combat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s not a game changer. For the Berserker, they are more likely to get a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lower Difficulty Level (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DL<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to hit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an enemy. That\u2019s nice in the sense that you may want to play your Path of the Skald (bard) character as a true warrior-poet of great\u00a0martial\u00a0deeds\u00a0who writes their\u00a0own\u00a0gushing\u00a0ballads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the Path is selected, it\u2019s a series of choices to determine your character\u2019s motivations, traits, and flaws. These are mostly for roleplaying purposes\u00a0but can enter into\u00a0the gears <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the system\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at critical points.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, you get to the stats. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They\u2019re divided into 4\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">attributes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with 5 associated skills<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0per attribute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You put points into each attribute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">each skill, then add them together<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to get your bonus to the d20 roll. Among the 20 skills, one will be your specialty meaning you\u2019ll roll 2d20 and take the higher result for that skill. This engine is a clever system that requires you to marshal your descriptions and in-game resource (Grit) to overcome challenges.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For every challenge, whether combat, physical, mental, or spiritual, the GM sets a Difficulty Level (DL) and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a Target Number. Don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assume, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">like I did, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that the Target Number is the number you need to roll to achieve an outcome<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ake a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">beat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0because<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in this game, the number you need to roll to achieve an outcome is the Difficulty Level. The Target Number is closer to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">monster\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hit Points in\u00a0<\/span><i>D&amp;D<\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, though situations can have a Target Number.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Here\u2019s where the rules light aspect of the game has some teeth and calculations. The DL is not a static, known affair and, starting out, it may be set at such a level that no matter how well you rol<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, you cannot achieve it without spending resources and assistance.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For skill checks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0including combat, you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">narrate\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your approach\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">justify\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0skill you plan to use)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and roll a d20 (2d20 if th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at skill\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is your specialty) and add your skill total (0 to 5\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with a\u00a0low level\u00a0character<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">). Compare the result to the Difficulty\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Level the GM selected from Minor (2-4) to \u201cImpossible\u201d (30+)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with groupings between<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A natural one produces a complication, a natural twenty removes a complication.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the GM, combat is easy to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">game. You set the DL and Target Number of the enemy\/challenge then describe it. The PCs make all of the rolls and take Strains\/Injuries <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when they fail\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rolls.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Because the player\u2019s results decide the enemy\u2019s actions, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he GM does not have to take time from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the players\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">roll separate turns for the enemy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It\u2019s possible that the PCs will overcome a challenge and take no Strain. It\u2019s possible that the PCs will roll so poorly that they are overcome; it\u2019s all on their dice, not the GM\u2019s. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the results are announced and compared to the Difficulty Level, the GM declares if it was positive or negative and the player narrates the visuals of the event.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It keeps the game moving and lets the GM focus on larger moments instead of minutia.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reducing a challenge\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Difficulty Level is the key to this system. Unlike\u00a0<\/span><i>D&amp;D<\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">getting past the armor class by one <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pip\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or by ten<\/span>\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">makes no difference<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> you still go to the same damage dice\u00a0regardless;\u00a0this system rewards greater distance between the Difficulty Level and your result. If the DL is set to Daunting (15-19) and you get a 25 (Epic), the difference is three<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0DLs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and that results in your character inflicting more Targets (damage) and gaining Grit (a resource to spend to lower DLs or reduce Strain).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With\u00a0more or less broad\u00a0options that lack specific moves or mechanical differences in weapons, this is not a roll-for-every-possibility RPG. A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ctions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can be talked through without the need for multiple dice rolls. Wonderful in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their degree of social acceptance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the greater amount of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">equality certain women enjoyed compared to other historic <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cultur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This game embraces the forward-minded portions of historic Vikings while working to reduce the horrible details to a more PG-13 <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sett<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">family oriented,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but it hews closely enough to ensure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it\u2019s not outrageously Viking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
