Inaugurated\u00a0<\/span>in 2009,\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>\u201ca<\/span>\u00a0Science Fiction\/Fantasy literature convention founded in honor of Robert Jordan, author of the\u00a0<\/span>Wheel of Time (<\/span><\/i><\/b>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>)<\/span><\/i><\/b>, and taking place each April in Atlanta, GA.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0XI<\/span><\/b>\u00a0ran April 26<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0to 28<\/span>th<\/span>, 2019 at the\u00a0<\/span>Crowne Plaza Atlanta Perimeter at Ravinia<\/span><\/b>\u00a0hotel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This convention is an author\u2019s convention setup as a panel-con, a convention that focuses on\u00a0<\/span>Jordan and other<\/span>\u00a0authors<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0works discussed through activity tracks\/panels and not as focused on, say, gaming or art or celebrities. Not to say they do not have gaming or artists or celebrities, just that they are in addition to their core competency, discussing Robert Jordan\u2019s work, specifically the\u00a0<\/span>Wheel of Time<\/span><\/i><\/b>, and, to a lesser degree, Brandon Sanderson (the author that completed the\u00a0<\/span>Wheel of Time<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0after Jordan\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>passing<\/span>) and the fiction he\u2019s created (including the\u00a0<\/span>Mistborn,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>which has its own RPG by\u00a0<\/span>Crafty Games<\/span><\/b><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Set up in a high-end hotel in the northern arc of Atlanta, this con draws a narrower collection of fans than a general interest convention. 2019 was their top attendance year-to-date at 890 paid badges. However, what the con lacks in size it makes up for by being friendly and well-organized. To illustrate this, Jon Hermsen, one of the individuals in-charge of the Gaming Track, came over and introduced himself to me while I was running my mouth in the gaming room. He wanted to make sure I was having fun and offered any help I might need. It was nice to see <\/span>a great level of\u00a0<\/span>courtesy and customer service from the volunteer staff, something I rarely see in for-pay employment. The\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0staff genuinely wanted me to have a good time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking of\u00a0<\/span>hospitality, I\u2019m going to let my inner George R. R. Martin take over (even though this was Robert Jordan\u2019s convention) and talk about the food. <\/span>[If you have not read the books of\u00a0<\/span>A Song of Ice and Fire<\/span><\/i><\/b>, Martin talks about the food a great deal.]\u00a0<\/span>With your badge comes access to the con suite which served full meals and snacks for every type of diet<\/span>ary plan:<\/span>\u00a0vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan\/dairy free or those that are\u00a0<\/span>celiacs<\/span>. When I say full meals, I mean meals like fried chicken, falafel, hot dogs, pizza, and more<\/span>, all well-prepared<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0boasts an impressive art show with a great array of artists including their\u00a0<\/span>Artist Guest of Honor<\/span><\/i>, Dan dos Santos, along with other artists like Melissa Gay,\u00a0<\/span>Amanda Makepeace<\/span><\/a>, Michael\u00a0Bielaczyc, Charles Urbach, Lisa Sell, A.L. Ashbaugh, and many more<\/span>, all<\/span> with work appearing across a range of media. Alongside the dealers’ hall was the art show, giving fans a chance to peruse the work and vote for the People\u2019s Choice Award in the art show. The art show alone sold $25,747 worth of prints and original work and, to give you an idea of how good that was, their “previous high-water mark for sales was last year\u2019s total of $14,456!\u201d Taken as a metric, that\u2019d be an average of nearly $29 per show attendee (well over half the price of a badge), which is an exceptional number for an author\u2019s convention. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I should note, this incredible increase may be the result of new licensors taking over the\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0license.\u00a0<\/span>It\u00a0<\/span>has been<\/span>\u00a0reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that they\u00a0<\/span>are not planning to\u00a0<\/span>renew the\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0artist\u2019s licenses as was the practice with the prior regime.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another element of the con\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon Anthology<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>\u00a0featuring a variety of writers and a sharp cover by Dan dos Santos. With only limited copies available and an incredible contributor list<\/span>\u00a0including Brandon Sanderson<\/span>, this book will be in-demand in the years to come.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While there\u2019s a number of tracks (discussing\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>, Brandon Sanderson, SF, fantasy, and more), a\u00a0<\/span>dealers’<\/span>\u00a0hall (which included my childhood friend<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Tessera<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Guild<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0co-founder,<\/span>\u00a0and award-winning RPG artist,\u00a0<\/span>Amanda Makepeace<\/span><\/a>), authors’ alley (which included Milton Davis, co-author of the <\/span>Ki Khanga RPG<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>), an art show, a charity auction, and more, my focus is gaming, so I spent most of my time in the gaming room.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

***<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Friday Gaming.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Between talking to friends and enjoying the convention, I played four tabletop roleplaying games and some card games. When looking for the thread about the gaming – the way I want to share my experience – it boiled down to Felix. When I play con games, sometimes I forget to ask players or the GM their name, so I end up knowing them by their character\u2019s name. Friday night, I played a session of\u00a0<\/span>Call of Cthulhu 7e<\/span><\/i><\/b>, the “<\/span>Blackwater Creek”\u00a0scenario. We started with four players as mobsters in Prohibition-era-Boston-come-to-West-Virginia, so<\/span>, naturally,<\/span>\u00a0I played with the worst New York accent EVER. We made characters and the guy to my left named his Felix. Without giving away the plot, we ended up dealing with some moonshiners and Felix, the character, sampled their whiskey. He asked what color it tasted like. The GM decided purple. But, for Felix, purple w<\/span>as<\/span>n\u2019t the right\u00a0<\/span>answer<\/span>\u00a0so he proceeded to attack the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>shiners. That was all of the provocation – \u2018shine not to taste. RPG-Jeff-Foxworthy would say, \u201cIf that was logical to you, you might be a\u00a0murderhobo.\u201d For us at the table, it was hilarious.\u00a0<\/span>CoC<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0is a deadly RPG, so Felix gets killed which worked for the player because he had an event he needed to get to. For my part, I lost 2 characters with identical, terrible New York accents (which may have been the reason they both died due to friendly fire… hmm…). Despite being\u00a0<\/span>CoC<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>it was a con one-shot, so it was a funny and fun RPG that I wanted to repeat throughout the weekend.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unrelated to that day\u2019s games, there was another moment that needed to be share from Friday, April 26<\/span>th<\/span>, 2019.\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>n that evening<\/span>, i<\/span>f you felt *all* of the problems of gaming were magically solved, that every\u00a0<\/span>challenge<\/span>\u00a0to ever occur at the gaming table was debated then resolved, if you felt that, you\u2019re welcome,\u00a0<\/span>be<\/span>cause that was Sean and I. Yep, that night I had a chance to talk to Sean Hillman (<\/span>Reign Dragon Press<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>SHMWorlds<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>EN World<\/span><\/b>, and the host of the SF Track at\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>) and, together, we solved\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the ills that have ever impacted tabletop RPGs.\u00a0<\/span>Figured\u2019em<\/span> all out and brought peace to the gaming table. No need to thank us, just felt you were owed an explanation as to why gaming was all perfect that night, it was because Sean and I were shooting the breeze.\u00a0 The world saved, we broke for food and <\/span>Magic: The Gathering<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

***<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Satur<\/span><\/b>day Gaming.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>I ran a\u00a0<\/span>Dungeons & Dragons 5e<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0session specifically for first timers and Felix II. That\u2019s right, the player that played Felix from the night before asked to play. Thus, Felix II was born. While this was a game for first timers, we had one true first-timer, two players that had not played a great deal, and one veteran.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the one-shot, the setting was a four-day-wide gravel desert and a navigator that abandoned them halfway through the trip. They then worked together to find a path to the next town (learning some history of the region and defeating some leftover enemies from another era). My goal was to let the players work together, find oddities, and play some\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i><\/b> that was tense and included combat but didn\u2019t just focus on combat a la<\/em> a typical dungeon crawl. <\/span>That said, for once my dice were hot. As an example, I rolled a 20, 19, and 20 in three successive attacks against the players. My goal was not to TPK the party, so I dumped\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span> those rolls because who wants their character to die mid-way through the first session? Beyond unwanted dice rolls, <\/span>we saw some nice roleplaying as they developed the story. We had several walkups to check out the game and one that pulled up a chair to see roleplaying up-close. At the end, I asked if they had a good time and I got a lot of nice feedback that led me to believe the players had fun (my number one concern). A<\/span>fter the game<\/span>, Felix II\u2019s player hung around to share an idea he had for a convention RPG with pre-generated character (which, honestly, I\u2019m still thinking on because it\u2019d be a winner of a game).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Wheel of Time<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0inspired a\u00a0<\/span>D&D 3e RPG<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0supplement rulebook, a campaign book, and a few\u00a0<\/span>Dragon Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0articles, and, since I\u2019m at\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>, I\u2019d hoped to participate in a\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0RPG session. I met a g<\/span>amer<\/span>\u00a0that had the books and we discussed the game (he felt that they mis-<\/span>stat’ed<\/span> some of the characters when they converted them to NPCs; I could not weigh in as I don\u2019t own the books). <\/span>Post-con, a friend of mine that played a\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0campaign shared his thoughts including a love of the HP system used for\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However,\u00a0<\/span>there was not a session of\u00a0<\/span>D&D 3e\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>, or the\u00a0<\/span>Mistborn<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0Adventure Game<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0scheduled, both on my\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0game list. That would have been a missed opportunity, but, before we played my\u00a0<\/span>D&D 5e<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0session, another gamer came over and mentioned that he<\/span>\u00a0planned to run<\/span>\u00a0a game of\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0that evening, just not the\u00a0<\/span>3e\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>version. Instead, it was a homebrew that used\u00a0<\/span>Fate Core<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and the magic system from\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Dreseden<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0Files RPG\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>(itself a\u00a0<\/span>Fate RPG<\/span><\/i><\/b>), both by\u00a0<\/span>Evil Hat Productions<\/span><\/b>. The system lent itself to the feel of the setting allowing us to channel the magic system of Robert Jordan\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>world<\/span>\u00a0and recreating the combat enough to feel\u00a0<\/span>like we were immersed in the books<\/span>. We started at 10 in the evening with 3 players and completed the first combat. A quick break later and a pair of friends joined as did – ha\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>\u00a0– Felix III. With the additional players, the game started along a new trajectory as\u00a0<\/span>Felix III and his brother<\/span>\u00a0decided to do my character a solid by sneaking after my backstory-nemesis and, you know, murdering the captain of the guard then bringing proof my character was innocent of his backstory-crime… but now an accessory to murder. RPG-Jeff-Foxworthy would say, \u201cIf that\u2019s how you handle an investigation, you might be a murderhobo.\u201d Of the four games I played, this one took first place at the murderhobo Olympics. That said, we laughed hard and started a meme that *WAS* our in-game in-joke for the rest of the con.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunday Gaming.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The next day, the last day of the con included another game, this time an RPG titled,\u00a0<\/span>SageBorn<\/span><\/b><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>GM\u2019ed<\/span>\u00a0by the game\u2019s creator, Michael\u00a0<\/span>Bielaczyc<\/span>, this game was a variant of\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0that focuses on Heroic Actions. H<\/span>eroic Actions<\/span>\u00a0are a version of the\u00a0<\/span>5e<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0Grapple rules that allows you to perform fantastic moves that may defeat someone without having to drop them to zero hit points. Combat involved more bonuses, so you felt more powerful compared to\u00a0<\/span>D&D<\/span><\/i><\/b>. We played aboard a 3D-printed ship, which could be pulled apart so we could see the action at every level. The ship made the adventure<\/span>! We could really pick where we wanted to be and get our characters in position for it<\/span>\u00a0as it added a literal new dimension to the game. Also, it was an effective vehicle [oy!] to demonstrate Heroic Actions and defeating someone without murdering them (toppl<\/span>ing enemies\u00a0<\/span>overboard into the water).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This game had six players (with one\u00a0<\/span>addition\u00a0<\/span>that joined at the end), Olaf the Barbarian among them. Why call out Olaf? Because he was played by the same player as Felix I to III. During the con, all four games I played, I played with the same player. It was nice because whenever I think about\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>, one of the better memories is making a friend through gaming and knowing that at\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a02020<\/span><\/b>, playing a game (or all of them) with him is on my list to-do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>JordonCon\u00a02019: Felix and Me!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span>oing to cons is about gaming, talking games, and making friends.\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0did an outsized job in every category I care about. The con put forth the maximum effort to feed\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the attendees, providing us with meals, drinks, and snacks. For the cost of your badge, you eat well at\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>. It\u2019s friendly, fun, and I made great memories in and out of the gaming room. The gaming was varied offering\u00a0<\/span>RPGs<\/span>\u00a0beyond what I played including a Willy Wonka-inspired adventure using\u00a0<\/span>5e<\/span><\/i><\/b>, as well as a\u00a0<\/span>Savage Worlds<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0game that promised to open with an alarm sounding aboard your spaceship, waking you\u00a0<\/span>ju<\/span>s<\/span>t in time to\u00a0<\/span>pull on your red shirt before you report for your mission. There was a nice variety of games to play and individuals interested in trying out RPGs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a02019<\/span><\/b>\u00a0put to bed, in 2020 I\u2019d like to see one tweak to the con\u2019s setup. While the primary focus is Robert Jordan, the secondary is Brandon Sanderson and, as such, I\u2019d love to see\u00a0<\/span>Crafty Games<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0sponsor a GM\u2019s badge for one GM ready to run 3 or more sessions of\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Mistborn Adventure Game<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/a>. It\u2019d be the right game to promote as\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0*unofficial*\u00a0<\/span>tabletop roleplaying game<\/span>. At this con, the\u00a0<\/span>Mistborn<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0RPG<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0would resonate with a roomful of fans versed in the setting and ready to dive into the world.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a02020<\/span><\/b>\u00a0has announced their Guest of Honor is\u00a0<\/span>NYT Bestselling<\/span><\/b>\u00a0author Faith Hunter. She \u201cwrites three series: The\u00a0<\/span>Jane\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/b>Yellowrock<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0series, dark urban fantasy novels featuring Jane, a Cherokee Skinwalker; the\u00a0<\/span>Rogue Mage<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0novels, a dark, urban fantasy \/ post-apocalyptic series and\u00a0<\/span>roleplaying game<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(co-written by Christina Stiles) from\u00a0<\/span>Misfit Studios<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0featuring Thorn St. Croix; and the\u00a0<\/span>Soulwood<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0Series<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0featuring Nell Nicholson Ingram.\u201d As with Sanderson\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Mistborn<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0RPG, this is the right con to honor the Guest of Honor with at least one session of the\u00a0<\/span>RPG she\u00a0<\/span>created<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTE: I\u2019d suggest the same <\/span>\u2013 a gaming company sponsoring a GM\u2019s badge in exchange for running their game at the con \u2013 f<\/span>or a\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0game, but there\u2019s no active\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b> RPG license as of this writing, so I\u2019m focusing on what is available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since he helped me to solve all of the gaming quandaries<\/span>\u00a0during the con<\/span>, I made Sean Hillman (<\/span>Reign Dragon Press<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>SHMWorlds<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>EN World<\/span><\/b>, and the host of the SF Track at\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>) read a draft of this<\/span>\u00a0article and he shared this thought.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSince the\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0ended, the convention has been expanding its reach in terms of authors and literature we talk about.\u201d He\u2019s right, to think of\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0as\u00a0<\/span>just<\/span><\/i>\u00a0a celebration of Robert Jordan is too limited\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0scope. True this is a convention that focuses on authors, but that<\/span>\u2019s t<\/span>he secret<\/span>, it is<\/span>\u00a0author<\/span>s<\/span><\/i><\/b>,<\/span>\u00a0plural.<\/span>\u00a0This convention has a solid base and I expect it to grow year-after-year.\u00a0<\/span>With an excellent setup and the upcoming\u00a0<\/span>WoT<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0TV series on\u00a0<\/span>Amazon Prime<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in 2020 or thereabouts, I believe\u00a0<\/span>JordanCon<\/span><\/b>\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span>expand<\/span>\u00a0from a small, focused project into a moderate-sized affair. At the rate it is increasing, it should grow organically allowing it to retain its charm even as it ramps up its audience. If you have a love for the\u00a0<\/span>Wheel of Time<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0and Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, or\u00a0<\/span>any fiction author, or just\u00a0<\/span>good gaming and art, all mixed with good food and friends, this con to waiting for you every April.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
