The Prophecy of Nine Omens Trilogy: An Interview With Tove Lund Jorgensen & Erik Jorgensen

Tove Lund Jorgensen and Erik Jorgensen of Midnight Tower have a new Kickstarter up for a Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition adventure, The Prophecy of Nine Omens Trilogy (5e). Last year, I spoke to them about their prior project, Before the Stroke of Midnight (Edgar Allan Poe and 5e), which struck me as a fun idea for 5e. With their new project, the adventure sounds even more ambitious.

EGG: Thanks for talking with me again. You have a new project on Kickstarter, The Prophecy of Nine Omens Trilogy (5e). This is a 5e adventure, what made levels 10 to 12 the right baseline for this adventure?

TOVE: We wanted to make high-level epic adventures (although there is nothing wrong with fighting goblins and kobolds, of course!). The trilogy is a sequence and part of the Eastern Farraway Campaign, that starts with the Hunter’s Full Moon and continue from level 1 all the way to level 12.

Our adventures contains scalable encounters, and can be played from tier 1 to 4 (that is from character level 1 all the way to level 20).

EGG: This is a 160ish page project. What new, unique content can backers expect? New monsters, magic items, etc?

ERIK: The three adventures will feature fully-fledged out monsters, brand new magic items, and legend and lore that have central parts in the quests. The magical items include The Emerald Crown, Njǫrd’s Bow, and Gift of Malgonath, and the characters get to battle monsters such as Arcane Sentinels, a Marauder, and Horrifying Jellyfish. In addition, there will be plenty of lore, e.g. The Prophecy of Nine Omens, the White Watchers, and the Temple of Tanaaris. And what’s more, the compendium, The Brave Adventurer’s Guide, will include more monsters and magic items in the vein of the trilogy, with a focus on sweeping exploration and bold adventuring!

EGG: What can you share about the orbstones in terms of powers and who made them?

TOVE: The orbstones were created by a group of powerful wizards in Eastern Farraway a long time ago and the orbstones can be used to open and close permanent portals to other planes. Once there were portal stones to different planes across Eastern Farraway. However, due to increased instability and the risk of war, the portals were closed, by extracting the arcane power that held to portals open.

Many portals still contain residuals of magic, and sometimes open during certain time of the year (e.g. the equinoxes or briefly during full moon), while others open erratically or when the stars are in certain constellations. However, most of the portals have been forgotten, neglected, or destroyed over the years.

EGG: How did Sirenholm sink?

TOVE: Sirenholm sank 700 years ago, when the scholar Tanyll T’karon explored the cave system underneath Sirenholm on the island Remora. Tanyll discovered a strange mirror-like portal, and together with a group of skilled mages, they decided to carry out a complex ritual to close it. According to legend, however, their ritual angered one of the Great Old Ones, who saw it as an assult on their plane, and ordered Krakens to attack and destroy Sirenholm. The Krakens tore the city to ruins and it tumbled down the depth. Only a few of its citizens survived, including the mage Jiera Dawn.

Today few know the exact location of the sunken city of Sirenholm, except for a few sea elves, but many adventures have sought after the city and dreamt about its treasures.

EGG: This campaign takes the players to an underwater temple. What can GMs and players expect from a campaign that ranges from dryland to the sea?

ERIK: Lots of varied challenges! There’ll be ambushes in the woods, missions that require stealth, exciting encounters at sea, and the investigation of a long-lost temple deep under the surface of a stormy sea. So characters of all classes will have a moment to shine! And groups that are able to deal with different types of obstacles (and monsters!) will do especially well. *Spoiler alert*: There’s also a plot twist in the end – but as our playtest showed, sharp-witted players might suspect that something’s amiss, and this might give them an extra edge at the climactic battle!

EGG: Who is providing the art for this project?

TOVE: I make a lot of the art for the books, but we’re also collaboration with the illustrator Alaina Milare and cartographer Toby Lancaster from Dark Realm Maps. Alaina creates NPC portraits and cover, while Toby draw maps (by hand in ink and watercolours). They are both amazing artists and we’ve been working together with them for several projects.

EGG: You’ve done a number of Kickstarters, what can you share from those experiences? What’s your number one lesson learned from them?

ERIK: We very quickly saw the value in listening to our backers! We’re constantly asking for opinions and feedback, and we’ve received tons of great insights and ideas. There have been many surprises, such as the huge interest in legend and lore, which has prompted us to think much more about this for our adventures and the world in which they take place. It’s even made us consider a future Kickstarter campaign for a module that we otherwise might not have thought about!

EGG: Beyond this project, what else are you working on?

TOVE: We’re currently updating the digital adventures in The Secrets of The Drow Trilogy, which we’re hoping will be available for print later this year. We also have plenty of exciting projects in stow and we might create a new Kickstarter project during the autumn if all goes according to plan.

EGG: Thank you for talking with me. Where can fans learn more about the campaign and follow you?

ERIK: Thank you for interviewing us! 🙂 You can find us here:
