Lore Check – Gossamer Dragonet

This is a newly-revised version of an article I wrote for the long-lost Gamer Security Agency website. FFGSW stats updated to comply with finalized core books, as only the beta Edge of the Empire was available when I wrote the original statblock.

There are a number of dangerous creatures in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, and any one of them could pose a threat to your hero when they least expect it. However, the gossamer dragonet is probably not one of these. Named for the transparent insect-like wings, the animal makes an unusual and charming pet, but can also be found in the wild on some worlds, mostly in the Outer Rim and the Freeworlds.

Dragonets are about a meter long with a 2 meter wingspan. A type of so-called “warm-blooded reptile,” they are omnivorous (mainly fruit, insects and meat). They can be found in many colors and some domestic-bred ones have very unusual coloration due to genetic manipulation. Some subspecies have fore- and/or hindlimbs, others only wings & prehensile tail. Unlike most reptillian pet species, dragonets are affectionate, clever and active. They are easily trained.

Design/play notes: In an EotE campaign, I asked the GM if my PC, the Tapani Force Exile Jade could have a pet. The gossamer dragonet is the result. I was inspired by a fantasy model, called the Faerie Dragon, I got to use in my art program, where I’ve used it as a living creature and a stuffed toy in various pieces. Then I decided to create stats for it. FFGSW stats were created like any NPC, while SWSE stats were created with the Beast rules.

In campaigns for either SWRPG system, a dragonet could be a pet, a McGuffin, a cargo or just a lighthearted detail. A gossamer dragonet might be the animal companion your Force & Destiny Seeker/Pathfinder bonds with.

I have found that my PC’s pet became fairly useful–alerting to an intruder, helping track or providing a distraction. But I didn’t get these benefits routinely or without the GM’s okay, and I think that was fair.

An FFG GM might consider using Boost/Setback dice to represent the dragonet’s aid–or even having the PC flip a Light Side Point as well if it’s something very unusual or important to the story. For SWSE campaigns, the +2/-2 circumstance modifiers will probably work for most situations.
