Kickstarter Korner – Adventure Location Cards

What is this project?

advcardAdventure Location Cards giving basic layouts of encounter locations on-the-fly with descriptions of the possible contents and scenarios surrounding the sites. This project by Rogue Comet promises to provide three, fifty-two card decks of Adventure Location Cards for Fantasy, Modern, and Sci-Fi RPGs. Each card will be double-sided with one side showing just a basic map of the location to show to players while the other side has all the information the GM might need including a map key, description of contents, and possible scenarios. Each card deck will come in its own deluxe plastic case. This should be an indispensable tool for any GM that sometimes finds him or herself needing a new location off-the-cuff.

What do I get?

adventureAdventure locations and adventure hooks! Like most Kickstarter campaigns, this project has varying pledge levels. At $15 you receive digital versions of all of the Adventure Location Cards. At $18 you also receive one physical deck of the Adventure Location Cards of your choice (Modern, Fantasy, or Sci-Fi) in addition to the pdf digital versions. There is a $40 “Early Bird Special” limited to the first 100 $40 pledges which will get you a physical and digital copy of all three decks. The final pledge level of $45 also gets you both the physical and digital decks.

Will it fund?

It will if the Gamer Nation finds out about this great set of tools! As of this writing, the project has 337 backers and is at $13,333 of its $15,000 pledge goal with 15 days to go. Only one of the 100 Early Bird Special Pledges remains. Rogue Comet describes itself as an RPG Company created by fans that want to provide tools for GMs. Adventure Location Cards is their reportedly fourth crowdfunding campaign. Their website indicates that they’ve had at least one other successful Kickstarter campaign and currently have reached their goals for another project through Indiegogo.

Stretch Goals?

There are no stretch goals for this particular project. However, it should be noted that Rogue Comet discloses that they have listened to community-based feedback on this project and already made a design change on the Adventure Location Cards. The promotional video at the top of their Kickstarter page shows the cards with a Rogue Comet Logo on the front and back of the cards. Near the bottom of the page they show a revised card design where the logos have been removed from the cards to provide more room for text and eliminate the distraction caused by the logo. I have to admit that at first glance I thought inclusion of the company logo on both sides of the cards was a little annoying and I am glad they saw fit to make this change.

Why should I back it?

No good campaign should ever feel like it is “on rails” and a good tool like these Adventure Location Cards will allow the GM to improvise and adapt when a group of players deviates from the planned adventure. Each set of cards is geared to a different genre, but Rogue Comet states that fully half of the locations in each deck can be easily adapted to any genre. I already thought that when seeing the demo video showing the modern factory location and I was thinking that would be a good location for my Star Wars game. The location maps also include “zones” to indicate scale of some of the larger open areas such as inside the factory and area aspects to describe specific conditions and equipment that might play into the encounter. One location listed “loose gravel” which I was thinking as a GM might mean an environmental setback as players run across the room. This is a project which I definitely see myself backing as this is something I’d love to have available at my own table.
