Masters in Exile is an ongoing series of articles where I will present fully fleshed out characters to fill the roll of master for the Jedi in your party. These profiles will include plot hooks, game stats, optional house rules, personality traits, sample quotes, and character development paths. It is my hope that these characters will serve as set pieces that a GM can dropping into their game, fully-formed and ready for play.

Yotho Adon, Ithorian Exotic Items Dealer & Oracle

Background: Yotho makes her home on the Ithorian herdship, Bazaar; an intergalactic tradeship designed to mimic the tropical environment of the Ithorian homeworld. She runs a small curiosity shop in the heart of Ittsu Village on the ship’s upper level. Although a canny businesswoman by trade, Adon trained with the Priesthood of The Mother Jungle in her youth.

Yotho is troubled by what she sees of the galaxy as the herdship traverses the stars. Though not a member of the Rebel Alliance, she is highly sympathetic to the cause (along with several other prominent figures on board the herdship). She will render whatever aid she can to Rebel heroes, but is wary of bring Imperial reprisal down on her fellow Ithorians. She doesn’t accept that open war is the only way to bring back freedom to the Galaxy.

Personality: Yotho is not exactly what one expects from an Ithorian; she can be sly, stubborn, and rambunctious. She is a salesperson first and foremost and isn’t afraid to banter with tourists or shout out sales to passers-by. However devious she might be she is never malicious in her intent and is a staunch pacifist like many of her kind. She is so dedicated to this ideal that she will not harm another being, even in self defense. She prefers to avoid trouble via de-escalation and compromise, or failing that, deception and misdirection.

Training: Yotho is well trained in her people’s native Force traditions (See Part II). She has keen instincts and if an individual who is strong in the Force enters her establishment, she will likely sense them and make subtle inquiries into their disposition and background. If the character has obvious Rebel ties or has proven themselves worthy in some way, she will arrange a test of character with some locals she knows (perhaps staging a theft or street brawl, or presenting the PCs with the opportunity to steal from her or others). She is a good judge of character and this test should target the PCs’ Moral Weakness. If the PCs attempt to solve the test with violence, bullying, or by taking advantage of another she will report them to the authorities and move on. If they show compassion, level-headedness, or cleverness she will discuss matters of the Force openly with them person and will agree to train them as best as she can if they request it.

If she does agree to train the PCs, her main goal is to assure that they use the Force responsibly and develop empathy for others. For example, when teaching the Sense power, she may insist on doing it while the PCs volunteer at a soup kitchen for the poor or slum during one of the Bazaar‘s planetary stops. She will have the PCs open their minds to the many suffering beings and teach that they should use their powers to empathize and help these beings, not seek glory and advantage. When teaching Ebb/Flow she might put the PCs into a truly precarious position; reporting them to an inspecting squad of Stormtroopers or stranding them on a planet with hostile flora/fauna, instructing them to “survive, but not at the expense of other life.”

Character Development: Yotho will pass on her knowledge as best she can, but at the beginning is unwilling to get drawn into the Rebellion beyond helping them avoid Imperial patrols or other such trouble. She abhors violence, and it can quickly drive a wedge between her and her students – even if they are using it to defend others or fight for their ideals. There is an opportunity for the PCs to sway her (and other sympathizers like her) to fully buy in and support the Rebellion. The herdship could be a strategic  safe haven and resupply depot for Rebels, as well as a meeting place for various cells along the Corellian Trade Spine, Hydian Way, and Rimma Run Trade Routes. With all the traffic passing through the vessel (including high-ranking Imperial officers and bureaucrats) it is also an excellent potential source of Intelligence. The PCs will have to fundamentally change her view of the Galaxy to do this, forcing her to confront Imperial atrocities and debating her ethics. Yotho is very stubborn and this should be a monumental undertaking, though if they manage it, the herdship could prove instrumental to bringing together the Rebels and taking down the Empire.

Quotes:

  • “That is no mere bauble, my friend – you are looking at the work of the the legendary Mandalorian dimensionalist sculptor, Bau Fedik. The work you see here is priceless…well, nearly priceless.”
  • “You do not need to LEARN to draw on the Force – all beings do this every day. What you need is to UNLEARN your misconceived notions of control and let the Force flow through you. The Force is like a river: you can fight it and be dashed against the rocks, move with it and get where it wants to take you, or become one with it and change the very world around you.”
  • “If you think fighting a war will restore the Galaxy you are deluded! It is a contradiction – you cannot wash away blood with more blood. A war is what created the Empire we now all suffer under.”

Sample Items Found in Yotho’s Shop:

  • A stylized portrait of Duchess Satine Kryze, by the Mandalorian dimensionalist sculptor, Bau Fedik. She loves this artistic celebration of the great pacifist political leader/martyr. She is asking 25,000 credits for the piece, but it is up to the GM if it is authentic.
  • A series of wooden panels that have been adorned with stylized star charts showing Xim the Despot’s empire. Yotho claims they hold the secret locations of his famed treasure vaults. It is up to the GM if there is any truth to this, but she asks for 8,000 credits for the set of four either way.
  • A large, showy necklace of 5 electrum disks that each represent one of the planets in the Alderaan System. The disk representing Alderaan is cracked and she says it happened on the same day that the Planet was destroyed. She says she fears the necklace is cursed and couldn’t risk selling it to a innocent customer…for less than 3,500 credits.
  • A curved and ornate knife kept in a security field that Yotho claims is a missing piece of Empress Teta’s Crown Jewels. According to her, the knife is worth 500,000 credits, but is only charging 100,000 because she detests having weapons of any kind in the shop.
  • A Cracked Lightsaber Crystal. (See Disciples of Harmony, pg. 52) In the days following Order 66, a Padawan attempted to hide on the herdship. Yotho attempted to buy her lightsaber, telling her to take the money and make a new life and forget her past as a warrior. The Jedi was later confronted by an Imperial patrol and was gunned down in the ensuing battle. Her lightsaber was destroyed by the hail of blaster fire, but the crystal called out to Adon, who recovered it. It is locked in a cabinet in her shop, but might call out to a Force User. She will use the Padawan’s story as a cautionary tale against anyone seeking to acquire it, and only gives it to a student reluctantly with a successful opposed Negotiation roll or well-roleplayed debate.

Next time in Part 2: An in-depth look at herdships as well as Ithorian Mysticism Force Tradition rules.
