Finder’s Archives – An-havva Township —

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Finder’s Archives.

In this column, we take some of the lands from Magic: The Gathering and turn them into something you can use for your fantasy games.

The stats given in each entry assumes that you’re using Pathfinder for your games, but they can easily be converted over into any fantasy system. This week we look at the An-havva Township.

An-havva Township

The township of An-havva is located on the edge of a great forest, once populated with beasts and monsters in equal measure. And this is where An-havva sticks out from those around it. Anyone is free to walk the streets, provided they behave themselves and do not disturb the peace. As such it is not unusual to see lizardmen and elves trading in the market, while a little further one can see wine-drinking faerie nobles sharing a table at the An-havva Inn with beer-swilling bugbears.
The only rules are: Do not disturb the peace and everyone is free.

Lay of the Land

An-havva Township was founded approximately a century ago by pioneers who had tired of the bureaucrazy of the large cities on the continent, and who wanted more freedom to determine their own fates. They found their little piece of land on the edges of the great forest.

The township is home to approximately 2,000, though this number increases dramatically in logging seasons, as lumberjacks from nearby towns cause the population to swell by up to 50% as they come for work.

The trees near An-havva grow tall and strong, and quick, as healing and growth magic is natural in the wood, but the people of An-havva have very few amongst them who can do any kind of spellwork. The life and glamour in An-havva aren’t good enough to attract the attention of any good wizards, and few spellcasters would want to live in such a frontier town.

The only exception is a local circle of 7 druids, who do their best to curb any excesses of the lumberjacks and help the locals remain in tune with nature.

Despite its people’s general mistrust of strangers, personal freedom is really important in An-havva. Amongst the trees, monsters, dangers, and hardship, everyone is free to live their own life and live each day with a sense of value and self-respect. A tough people, hardened by experience, and used to a rough life, the folk of An-havva are a strong force for change and new ways of thinking.

There are no exceptional places within An-havva, though it has a thriving marketplace – there is one notable exception to that though, which is the An-havva Inn, which is the finest dining and drinking establishment for at least 300 miles around (and likely further). It boasts a wine and ale cellar second to none, and it caters to everyone with freshly made seasonal meals, guaranteed to fill the belly of even the hungriest guest.

Dangers

An-havva itself is a safe haven, guarded by the local constabulary, capably led by a man named Joskun (NG human male ranger 9), who personally takes care of the biggest threats, sometimes aided by the local druid circle (7 N human druids of level 1 through 7). Outside the city boundaries, however, people are strongly advised to travel together, as the forests are dangerous, and the home to several bugbear tribes, a number of ettins, giant spiders and rumors abound concerning a young green dragon, though no one has survived to tell the tale, should the dragon actually exist.

40 years old, and a gamer since I was 13. These days I freelance as a writer for various companies (currently Fat Goblin Games, Flaming Crab Games, Outland Entertainment, Paizo, Raging Swan Games, Rusted Iron Games, and Zenith Games), I've dipped my hands into all sorts of games, but my current "go-to" games are Pathfinder 2, Dungeon Crawl Classics and SLA Industries. Unfortunately, while wargaming used to be a big hobby, with wife, dog and daughter came less time.
