Finder’s Archive – Bog Wreckage

Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Finder’s Archives.

In this column, we take some of the lands from Magic: The Gathering and turn them into something you can use for your fantasy games.

The stats given in each entry assumes that you’re using Pathfinder 2 for your games, but they can easily be converted over into any fantasy system. This week we delve deep into history with the Bog Wreckage.

Bog Wreckage

Mired deep in an ancient bog is a patch of land known as Bog Wreckage. Its real name is lost to time, but its architecture is unique in this world, though it combines elements of classical architecture with something… different. Nobody can quite explain what it is, but it starts with the fact that though the inhabitants appear to have been humans of some variety, none of the architecture is symmetrical. Practically all other human architecture and art strives for this, as the human eye perceives it as beautiful, but not this particular ancient culture. It’s been studied for centuries, and though everything else in the bog sinks out of sight after a few decades at most, Bog Wreckage stays where it is – some even claim that it’s becoming clearer as time passes.

Lay of the Land

The truth is that Bog Wreckage is NOT a lost civilization, but one that doesn’t exist yet. It is, very slowly, traveling back in time, from a point in the future that’s thousands of years away, trying to avoid an (as yet) unknown catastrophe. Something must have gone wrong, however, since it has not arrived all at once, but is only slowly materializing as time passes. No one is sure of the schedule, but it appears to be speeding up, so its arrival may be imminent.

Another thing that’s started to happen is that as it gets closer, the area sees more darkness than it should. The nights of the full moon are somehow shorter, while the nights with no moon last longer. Astronomers are trying to figure it out, but only the strongest diviners have found it to be tied to Bog Wreckage. It seems that not even the gods know what’s in the future – or if they do, they’re staying very quiet about it.

Dangers

The dangers in Bog Wreckage are few, but they’re getting more and more numerous. Hounds of Tindalos have started coming through the cracks of reality. A Denizen of Leng has taken up residence here, seemingly feeling perfectly at home. Even Gugs have started burrowing up from the underground. More worryingly though, is that in the deepest part of the ruins/beginning buildings are a budding darkness – one that gets darker by the day. Various methods of scrying reveal that the creature coming through is an ancient threat to the world, one likely to be as powerful as a Tarrasque. More specifically the creature that’s being born (or brought back in time?) is a Shoggoth of immense power. From its burgeoning psychic abilities, it’s clear that the creature is far more intelligent than a normal Shoggoth, and there is some indication (from its communications) that it was once human.

40 years old, and a gamer since I was 13. These days I freelance as a writer for various companies (currently Fat Goblin Games, Flaming Crab Games, Outland Entertainment, Paizo, Raging Swan Games, Rusted Iron Games, and Zenith Games), I've dipped my hands into all sorts of games, but my current "go-to" games are Pathfinder 2, Dungeon Crawl Classics and SLA Industries. Unfortunately, while wargaming used to be a big hobby, with wife, dog and daughter came less time.
