SHY’LIN A’VEN
Twi’lek Spy/Scout

Duty: Resource Acquisition–The resources Shy’lin specializes in acquiring are planets and natural resources, but she is happy to help obtain anything that will aid the Alliance.

Motivation: Reward (Moral)–On both her homeworld and her indenture with the Imperial Survey Corps, Shy’lin has seen how the Empire has devastated planets as well as people of all species, and the Alliance gives her a chance to stop this. And Maybe, when the Empire is defeated, repair some of the damage.

Backstory: Shy’lin grew up in a science focused clan on Ryloth during the Clone Wars. As a distraction from the war, her teachers encouraged her interest in the natural history of the Twi’lek homeworld and other planets. Shy hoped the end of the war would mean she could finally explore the planets she’d read about, perhaps find new worlds for colonists or new resources.

But under Emperor Palpatine’s rule, the warning cliché (shared by many cultures) of “Be careful what you ask for, you might get it” is sadly true, especially for non-human young people. Shy was accepted to university to study environmental sciences–but shortly after her arrival, Imperial “recruiters” press-ganged Shy and several other students into the Imperial Survey Corps. While she did get to help find new worlds, the ISC–like most Imperial organizations–was a miserable posting for a non-human. At best she was treated as second-class; at worst actively harassed. She received the worst treatment on her last ship, Conquest.

Shy bided her time, until Conquest found a big prize–a small planet a Rebel team was surveying as possible safe world. Her hated captain and crewmates, hidden in an asteroid field, decided to celebrate the find which would make their careers before jumping back out of the system to report. Even better, from Shy’s point of view, her lax captain allowed their illicit liquor supply to flow freely, giving her the opportunity to contact their Rebel counterparts.

Once Shy was debriefed, the Alliance had gained not only a new hidden safe world, but some low-level intel, a handful of prisoners of dubious value, a ship (renamed Whyynott), and a new recruit.

Design Notes: This is another +25 XP pregen originally created for a con game. For this version, at Jon “Donovan Morningfire” Stevens’ suggestion, I used a “budget” of 1500 credits to represent the opportunity a somewhat experienced PC would have to find, buy, or be issued better gear. Empty Bacta Tank provided the gear loadout to help Shy’lin in a variety of infiltration and recon assignments. Much of Shylin’s interest in natural resources can be handled narratively. Jon and EBT also provided the vessel names.

Shy’lin was inspired by the accompanying picture, one of the earliest pieces of art that I made with Daz Studio, and still a favorite of mine. Her surname is a nod to Newara Ven, of the popular Legends Rogue Squadron, who was also known as Newar’aven.
