Astral Projections – Mudhorn for Star Wars Saga Edition

©2019 Disney/LucasFilm Ltd.

The Xenobiologist has discovered a wild beast of Arvala-7. The mudhorn is a large, woolly quadruped with an impressive, slightly curved keratinous (made of the same type of cells as skin, hair, etc.) horn at the front of its muzzle. It appears to be one of the relatively rare oviparous (egg-laying) mammals. Mudhorns are probably herbivores, but it is possible they are omnivores as bones have been found in dens known to have been used by the animals.

As the name suggests, they prefer to wallow and den in mud, probably to cool off and keep their hide moist, since Arvala-7 is a relatively warm, dry world. Mudhorns lay a single egg in their den and guard it. A mudhorn egg is larger than many humanoid heads and has a very hard, woolly shell filled with a bright yellow-gold “yolk.” The eggs are a highly-prized delicacy amongst the Jawa clans, possibly because it is near impossible for a clan to obtain them without aid.

Design & Play Notes: Another beast from the new, live-action Star Wars TV series, The Mandalorian, now with SWSE stats! Since the more narrative FFG Star Wars Silhouette/Range band are hard to translate to more tactical SWSE Size/Reach/Fighting Space, I used those from the official SWSE Reek statblock, since the Reek has a similar build, niche, and attacks. Thus those stats became the basis for this build. Although Stealth isn’t a trained skill, I included it for convenience, as Stealth is modified by size.

Aside from their traditional Legends hunting companion the strill, Mandalorians so far don’t seem to have a great deal of luck with animals. As usual with beasts, I combined Star Wars lore with my Zoology degree to create this write-up. As in the show, the Mudhorn makes a good obstacle for adventurers. And don’t forget, it’s very common for the same animal to be found on multiple planets.
