It’s back to the Galaxy Far, Far Away this week in Astral Projections! A couple weeks ago, my son and I watched the Clone Wars Season 4 opening story arc, Water War/Gungan Attack/Prisoner, which takes place on Mon Cala (aka Dac). I am always intrigued by Star Wars underwater technology and creatures as I SCUBA dive and have a degree in Zoology. So these cyborg jellyfish really got my attention.

Hydroid Medusae started off as an impressive species of jellyfish native to the oceans of Karkaris. Karkarodon military scientists designed cybernetic weapons and armor implants to make bioweapons of the creatures. They were deployed in large numbers by the Separatist Riff Tamson during the Battle of Mon Cala in the Clone Wars.

While this is the most notable use of the hydroids, it is quite possible they were used on other oceanic worlds during the Clones Wars, or even before, as it is not clear when the Karkarodons developed these cyborgs. They may also be found during the Rebellion Era or later. Either some of the hydroids or the information for creating them likely survived the CIS defeat.

Design Notes: These cyborgs could have been statted as weapons, but I felt that Minions was a better fit for how they were used in the show. Silhouette is based on relative sizes of characters and hydroids in the episodes. These have not been playtested, but “weapon” damages are based off standard AoR weapons (Carbine and Force Pike).
