This is going to be excellent and timely since I just created my first ever actual.play podcast with my kids. Unfortunately I cannot release it since it would break WotC's rules for publishing such a 'cast centered around a play test of their precious D&D Next.

Garrett,
Another great podcast in D20 Radio history, that was!
I have started to record my own kids' sessions and have finally mastered the use of an audio program to do so, however, I am wondering about the equipment. You mentioned that having the right recording equipment aids in making a great podcast and this has me intrigued. Can you make some recommendations? At the moment, I am making do with a simple MP3 player/Audio recorder. While sufficient to the task there are some very noticeable limitations.
I love what you have done with the Transmissions from Alternate Universes section of the 'cast. You, my friend, are a master of sound and editing. I cannot wait to see what you do with the finale.
Cheers!

I have a usb shure brand microphone from Guitar Center. Not only does it have a wide pickup pattern (which means everyone near the microphone can be heard), but it has wonderful quality. This cost 60 bucks at Guitar Center. Plug that in to your laptop. I use Audacity, a freeware program, to record and Adobe Audition to edit. Why Audition? It was what I was trained on in my wedding videography days. Audacity is fine to the task. There are plenty of tutorials on youtube. I just didn't want to start over with a fresh learning curve. That my friend is all you need. Garrett

You da man, Garrett. Thanks for the suggestions especially on the microphone. Does it come with a stand or will I have to manufacture a way to keep it from rolling around the table?

It comes with a stand. Not sure about the cable. Garrett

Some very good suggestions about determining if one's group is suitable for a "live play" podcast.
