Just a question to threw out there to the other consular tanks, When parsing your fights have you notice that mind control and mass mind control throwing ridiculously high numbers of threat? Ive seen just my mind control doing 30k of threat I wouldnt think this is normal so my thoughts are it could be a bug but figured i would ask and see if anyone else was noticing high numbers like this.

isn't that how all the "Must attack me for 6 seconds" powers work? They deal a stupidly high threat that then vanishes after 6 seconds?

Thats the thing that gets me it doesn't say in the tool tips but its not consistent at all to give me a positive idea. One time it will hit for as little as 1 threat to the extremes of 1.5mil it doesnt make sense to me its just all over the boards. That was just my thoughts.

I understood that taunt abilities add threat to you equal to 110% of the person with the highest threat. Unlike some games, this threat doesn't dissipate after the 6 sec effect.

So taunts in SWTOR have two effects:

1. Force the target to attack you for 6 sec

2. Add to your threat table.

The cool part about it that I cam visually see this happining when I look at the log my aggro looks like stairs. It does seem they kinda normalized my mass mind control so that part is cool

So theoretically, assuming I'm correct, Taunt can be a regular part of a tank's rotation, especially since it doesn't trigger a global cooldown, you can slot it in without missing a beat. You don't need to wait 'til you lose agro to use Taunt/Mind Control, since it actually generates threat for you. And the more threat you have, the more you gain from using it, and the more your threat lead grows.

If you use it at the start of the fight, it isn't going to generate as much for you as it does at the end of the fight. That's probably why you're seeing larger jumps sometimes.

The only exception to the above rule is if you know a threat wipe is coming. In that case, you'll need to save it to use to grab the target straight away.

With this thinking, Taunt/MC is first a threat-building tool, second an agro-snatching tool.

I do use it in my rotation regularly. When I first charge in like to use my force pull to get the initial specaily more so on raid boss's due to it just applies the threat aspect so i get that extra second. But for the first 20 seconds of the fight are my cruicial so once every one starts to pop there rotations i threw my taunt up then cause they are going to start to pull ahead of me if i dont..

For tank swaps like we do in kp i make sure that its off cool down so when I swap to the adds i use my mass mind control plus wither and the adds are on my for the moment not as great as mindcontrol but it does the job.. but on this fight you have his frenzy so you can kinda prepair the tank on the boss cause hes being hit and right after the other tank picks it up so that makes it kinda easier.

I would think that the taunts would work similar on every class due to they are all still the same mechanic. The only difference would be the other abilities that follow for threat but the taunts should be used when they can and it helps so you dont loose agro to your dps.

The only difference that I've seen is that the Trooper's area taunt centers on the targetted mob and not the PC like the Shadow and Guardian.

I could be entirely mistaken on that though.
