The Guild has been up and running for almost 5 months now. During that time, several attempts have been made to get folks to include their forum names as a Member Note on the guild roster.

The reasoning behind this is relatively simple:

1: We, as a guild, want to be able to get to know you on the forums as well. Having your Forum name associated with you Character(s) name allows us to do that.

2: If we need to contact folks out of the game, knowing who to send a PM to on the forums is very useful.

3: We feel we have developed a level of trust with those who use these forums and we mutually enjoy each others company. Associating Forum and Character names reassures us that we are amongst friends.

And now, with the advent of the Guild Banks we have some additional reasons. As noted in other posts, Initiate level is the lowest level in our Guild, and as such, it has little to no access to Guild Bank functions and no way to secure it so that it may have freer use of the Guild Bank. We want you to be able to use our bank as you see fit, but we can't make Initiate level secure enough to allow this.

In addition, one of the requirements for promotion to the next rank up, Revanchist, is to have a Forum name associated with your Character names. Some folks have slipped through this requirement and as such the Officers will be taking a look at the Roster and returning those who do not meet this requirement to Initiate level.

Please take the time to get your Forum name associated with your Character(s) names. You've got about a week to get that taken care of. If you are unsure how to do this, please ask in guild chat and either have it done, or learn the process for doing it yourself.

We really want to be able to offer proper access to the bank to everyone, but we also feel we really want to make sure people are meeting the requirements to be at levels that allow such access both for the guild's security and your own.

Question, are alts kept at Initiate? I can see some logic in that, but if they are I need to see about having my main and alt status swapped. It turns out I like playing a troopoer more than a consular.

Your alts are entitled to whatever rank your highest-ranking character in the guild is, as far as I understand. If you see an officer online, they should be able to quickly promote needed characters.

This does, however, carry an issue now of doubling (or tripling) the guild bank access of everyone with one or more alts, so we may need to re-evaluate it.

I would suggest making an alt rank, but I think we're using all the available ranks. If that's the case I think we keep alts as initiates for non officer members.

As a non-officer with an alt in the guild, I have no problem with my alt being left at initiate.

I personally don't see a reason to keep Alts at Initiate. In other guilds I have been in, Alts generally remain at either the same level as the main or at the basic full member level. If we are worried about bank access, we probably should not promote you anyhow. ;) However, I can see the wisdom of Alts only being Revanchists.

I know that I personally use the bank in STO to move stuff between alts easily, but that is because the mail system is limited to 5 items per mail. In SW we seem to have the opposite set up. The bank is limited and the e-mail has more slots.

As far as I am concerned, your ALTs are entitled to the same rank as your main character. This prevents pointless switching between characters to get something done.

Edit: This doesn't mean they HAVE to be, just that they can be if you like.

This has been implemented. In all, about 20 - 25 guild members were returned to initiate status.

This will be an ongoing policy. If you want to be promoted up, you must have a member note that states your forum name.

I was unaware of this policy, but I like it a lot.

I wish we had implemented this in my Rift guild. :)


One point of difficulty, though.

I wonder if many of our current members are not members of the larger Gamer Nation community (i.e. recruited from Vrook Lamar and not from our forums). Those members aren't likely to be aware of this policy and, if they aren't already involved in our forum community, probably aren't interested. Perhaps they prefer to keep their in-game associations strictly in-game.

Do we really want those players who participate well in-game (e.g. help, share knowledge and resources, are generally awesome people) to be ineligible for rank-based acknowledgements (via promotion) because of their forum status (or lack thereof)?

As I said before, I like the current policy because in my last guild I worked really hard to get people onto the forums and this kind of policy might have compelled some to do so.

On the other hand, the real reason our leaders in Rift wanted members on the forums was to facilitate communication and "community deepening." Many of those who did register a username on the forums as per our requests did not become active forum users; they were just doing as we asked.

Does making forum registration such an important part of guild advancement and growth really generate a stronger guild community overall? Perhaps, but you have to have people who want to be active on the forums for it to work. Somehow I wonder whether forcing people to register and declare their forums names just to be considered a "Member" is really the best idea.

Just throwing ideas out there, since the title of the thread says, "Discussion." 8P

Considering that this guild is for those members of "The Gamer Nation"; yes, we should expect them to at least have a presence on thse forums, and sign up for these forums, and get involved in the guild.

They should, at the very least, have a name over on these boards and check them occasionally for news and updates about our guild.

Otherwise, why are they in this guild at all?

Because we're an awesome group of people who run end-game content and treat people well across all levels.

I think it's only a matter of time before some of those people outside the guild who meet us in PUGs and warzones want to join our guild in-game. This is the scenario I'm more concerned about.

Then I think it is our mission as Gamer Nationers to educate these new members on who we are, how awesome the Gamer Nation is and try to convince them to join us on our quest of gaming conquest.

Personally (and I just drove for 13 hours so I can give you the articulate version later), the hypothetical "awesome person who just doesn't want to be on the forums" would need to give me a good reason why not for that even to be a valid scenario. If they're such an active, helpful, and friendly presence in-game, why would it be such a bother to them to register an account here and maybe at least look around? A flat, unexplained unwillingness to do so would almost be evidence to the contrary that they are contributing positively.

Refusal with explanation, on the other hand, is a different story. And depending on said explanation(s), I'm sure we'd be open to looking at the policy further.

No offense intended, TJ, but I don't care for that attitude. It just sounds a little judgmental and unreasonable to me. SWTOR is a game and while I would think that participation in the forums is a small price to pay for participation in the guild*, I'm not comfortable making that kind of demand of someone else. To use someone's level of willingness as a way to judge the rest of their participation is just too heavy-handed for me.

That's how I feel.

*Of course, I think of our forums as value added, not a price to pay, but I started here and love this branch of our community. I wouldn't demand that another member feel the same way or force them to try and fit my mould in order to participate with us at all.

If this was a typical guild, one with no connection to D20 Radio. We would likely still have a forum and expect members to sign up and read as a way to communicate. I don't see what the issue is.
