I take issue with this press release...

Quote:
The Pathfinder world is high fantasy in the tradition of epics like The Lord of the Rings, Conan, the Wheel of Time and Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones is about as far from High Fantasy as you can get without becoming just Historical Fiction. :P

Sounds promising, but I'll need to see more. Past let-downs have made me very skeptical about new MMOs. Done well, Golarion (I can only assume) would make a fantastic MMO setting.

Do you think that PFO's development will warrant a featured section in the cast?
Maybe even an entire dedicated show someday?

I have an extensive background in testing online game platforms.
It's what positioned me to eventually create Justice Radio Productions.
"By Gamers, for Gamers" was our motto with a focus on delivering awesome streaming music
and immerse game content to MMO players.

An idea worth (re)entertaining.

It will merit a show when and if it is released into beta -- and not until.

Sure we can talk about it. We can even interview people about it, too. (And we probably will) But this game is MUCH too early in the vaporware stage to be devoting too much blood, toil, tears and sweat into a game that does not yet exist -- to be produced by a company that is still seeking investors. Let's have a bit of a reality check here.

Put another way, if Paizo/ Goblinworks have not yet INVENTED the jet plane that flies to Golarion, it's MUCH too early to start packing for a vacation to Absalom, let alone to be bickering about whether or not we will need SPF 40 when we get there (someday).

All in good time -- if we are LUCKY.

It'll never happen but I vote for squad based turn based combat.

char gen 5-6 characters and run around as an entire party

when you meet up with other gamers you split your party, 3 from yours 3 from his, join up with 6 people and everyone contributes one character.

but

It'll never happen ;)

After NWN1, I said the same thing you did. Give me party control and multiplayer and it will rock I said.

Yeah well -- I was wrong. They were stupid enough to listen to fans in NWN2 and did exactly that. Turns out singe player control was better and party control SUCKED. So, I disrespectfully disagree and call you on your profoundly bad idea. It SOUNDS good -- but it plays BAD.

And no, it won't happen.

PaizoCon 2012 will be interesting. It'll be too early for details but I bet Goblinworks could have some concept art to show. I hope they say something there.

I know Paizo is really the ascending star right now. Pathfinder has been great for them. I don't know that much about the gaming industry (pen-and-paper or online), but a project like this must mean Paizo has confidence in Pathfinder and where they think the IP can take them in the future.

Hell, I liked DDO. Still do. I hate the way its dungeons and module based adventures are presented, though I love the way they play. DDO started to fall apart when it started to become so crazily loot based, imo.

Give me a continuous overworld with instanced "modules" and I'll play that game.

One thing DDO did I really liked was making XP not directly tied to killing stuff. You could sneak past stuff and get the same XP for the dungeon, actually you got a bonus. You would also get a bonus for maximum carnage so it was up to you how to tackle things.

Well, there's dragons, giants, walking dead, warlocks, witches, skinchangers, murderous shadows, and priestesses capable of resisting lethal poisons. . . ;-) (I'm maybe a quarter to a third through the third book at the moment, and though it started slow on the supernatural events, it's ramped up quite a bit since then...)

On topic, I'm really not an MMORPG type guy at all. I downloaded a trial of WoW, played for a short amount of time, and was bored the whole time. (Though having seen how much time some friends of mine in high school put into this thing when it first came out, I guess that might be a good thing as far as I'm concerned. :P) I played D&D Online for a couple of days, thought it was fairly interesting, but stopped caring pretty quickly. (And that one even had the extra benefit of being set in a setting that I, while not possessing terribly much knowledge of beforehand, was definitely interested in and wanted to play with more.) Most recently, I played for a few hours in a TOR beta weekend, found the gameplay incredibly dull, and kept feeling like I'd have a lot more fun playing this game if it didn't have so many other people also running through the same area doing the same quests as me, over and over again.

So, Pathfinder Online isn't terribly likely to become an obsession of mine, but I'll give it a shot, see if it does something for me that other MMORPGs I've tried haven't. Or maybe I'll get so sucked into the setting that I'll forgive it such shortcomings it might have, I don't know - I like Golarion, and if I can recreate my Chelaxian Paladin of Sarenrae there, good times might be had, after all. That it doesn't seem to be sticking to the Pathfinder/d20 system as far as rules goes doesn't really bother me, though - what I'd want from a Pathfinder game is the Golarion setting and the adventure quality that Paizo is known for. I know a lot of people on the Paizo boards have complained about this, basically saying that if the game doesn't use Pathfinder rules there's no point in playing it, but, really, I don't get that. At all. To each his own, I guess, but to me, setting and stories are more important than, well, numbers. :P

to me, what would be really sweet, but i know they are not going to do, would be to include the Adventure Paths as playable content.

As far as content goes its in their own best interest to work with stuff thats already developed, as in APs or other modules. That will be one of the things to really listen for, see how much of a sand box design vs linear approach they take.
Gnome Stew had an interesting article on tiered level design
http://www.gnomestew.com/gming-advice/in-rebuttal-of-the-level-tiered-starting-area?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GnomeStew+%28Gnome+Stew%29
wonder how PFMMO will approach it?
