So, this came up last night in my first Esseles run on the Live Servers. The nice Esseles Consular Robe popped up and I hit "Greed" the second I had the option. The other Consular (Xander) hit Need, and naturally he won it.

First, I have no issue what so ever with how it went down. As someone who has only rarely been in groups and teams large enough to encounter this problem, I am perhaps not up to scratch on the polite "Rule of Thumb" for the Need/Greed system.

Typically, if I can't even use it, I pass.

If I can use it, I hit Greed.

I almost never ever use Need, unless I talk to the party about it first.

What is our guildeline here? I want to be fair, but dammit I want a shot at the good stuff for my toon too...
;)

In my rather limited experiance:

- If the item is useless to you, hit Greed, 'cause you can still vend it. Unless you're a much higher level character escorting some lowbie guildmates through an instance, then just pass.

- If the item is an upgrade for the character you're using, there's no reason not to hit Need.

- If the item is an upgrade for an alt or a companion, Greed, unless you talk to the group first and ask if it's cool to Need it. And don't be a dick if they say no. Especially if the item is an upgrade for someone else in the group.

I think it would be pretty difficult for anyone to object to those basic guidelines.

You should generally ask before needing on any high value BOE items, even if it is an upgrade for you.

I disagree. That's what the need button is for.

Okay, this is how I'll proceed then.

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

This is correct and how I go about my looting.
