Something about Tournament RPGA play did not get mentioned. All the RPGA Tournaments that I have been in were scored as follows:

First there are TWO ways to advance in a multi-round tournament. Firstly, the "Table as a whole" advances based on overall score for adventure completion. Secondly, there are the individual advancements of the top players from the tables that DO NOT advance, allowing the best players from the least groups to form new ad-hoc groups and continue onwards in a "second chance tier".

This is what gave rise to the current crops of "Named Groups" who return regularly for conventions.

On the Phase Spider, it is not impossible to fight and beat one of these things without access to the ethereal plane and without a Phase Door spell. Firstly, you can strike the creature while it is IN phase. Secondly, you can mount the creature IN phase, and ride it OUT of phase into the ethereal plane. (hopefully the GM ruling is that it returns to the material plane when it dies). Thirdly, as a part of a tournament module, it is incredibly likely that the "special access" materials allowing the spider to be pinned in the material plane or you or your weapons to get to the out of phase spider, are things to be found by the party, or earned through "good RP devices" in the course of the adventure. Teams/characters that fail to find/earn the appropriate items prior to the Phase Spider encounter obviously score worse than those that do, especially if they die/TPK in the process. If they still manage to pull off a victory "the hard way" they can be scored appropriately.
