I've been listening to your GenCon bits and your interview with Frank Mentzer inspired me to share this tid bit I found in the Official Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master's Guide from '79. I'm not positive this is from the Holy Gygax, but from everything I've heard on this podcast, it sounds like something he would say. Quote: It is the spirit of the game, not the letter of the rules, which is important. Never hold to the letter written, nor allow some barracks room lawyer to force quotations from the rule book upon you, if it goes against the obvious intent of the game. As you hew the line with respect to conformity to major systems and uniformity of play in general, also be certain the game is mastered by you and not by your players. Within the broad parameters given in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Volumes, you are creator and final arbiter. By ordering things as they should be, the game as a whole first, your campaign next, and your participants thereafter, You will be playing Advanced Dungeons & Dragons as it was meant to be. May you find as much pleasure in so doing as the rest of us do!

Well if it was in the DMG, they it was the word of Gary.
I agree with the statement. That's how they were back then, and with old schoolers. We control the rules, the rules do not control us. Like Frank said in his interview, we'd rather just toss a die to figure things out to keep the game going then debating and looking things up.
That is the problem with later editions, that the rules became "THE RULES" and not what the DM decides. Its your game, you are running it, you decide how it works. I noticed this about 3E and up editions a lot, listening to podcasts and actual play, and even playing in games... players and dm's will say... well the book says, so that is how it is, instead of "Ok here is how it's going to be"

Running an RPG should be like Zen Buddhist Meditation. Learn the methods and forms of meditation, so that you can meditate without using them. Know the rules of the system, so that you can disregard it and still maintain coherence.

I often myself use the Gygax method of "Ok, roll me a D6 and tell me what you get?" and decide the outcoming.
