I loved this book when I played 1e (actually I still love it) but I never really never used it in a regular game. We used it to make Thor fight Zeus and things like that, but never as part of a regular D&D game.

I used to use this book when I played Cleric's or made up NPC's. I tried to add some different flavor into my games and throw in worshippers of god XX and goddess xx.

I remember my first homebrew setting that I created for my home game basically consisted of me trying to find a home for each of the pantheons in the book, with the exception of the Arthurian section and the Newhon section. However, because of the Newhon section, I started reading Fritz Leiber's stories, and that was a great thing in my book.
I always wanted to have a PC take a cleric of the Chinese pantheon to see how the "DM assigns your spell list for the day" mechanic would work out, but at this phase in life there is no way I'd want to micromanage on that level.

The worlds I played on usually had their own pantheons (i.e. Greyhawk, Dragonlance, etc.) but was talking more about the actual stats for the deities. Anyone use those? Did anyone's characters get high enough level to challenge Zeus?

If I was a player, I normally asked, such as playing a cleric of Thor, the DM would normally say, sure.

I got a kick out of fact that I used a cleric of Set in my very first Forgotten Realms game, thinking I had imported my very own "interloper deity," because at the time we were still years away from Mulhorand being turned into "Faerun Egypt."

The only time I ever played a cleric was in a 3.5 Forgotten Realms campaign (my only 3.5 campaign -- I wasn't crazy about that version). I did ask the DM if I could be a cleric of Thor and he said no Thor in his game. Oh well.
