The Sith Empire has returned, and the flames of war have engulfed the galaxy. The Great War spanned decades, and no sector was untouched by its horrors. At last, some small breath of peace has come in the form of the Treaty of Coruscant: a tentative pact between the Republic and the Sith, forced upon us by the sacking of Coruscant.

The small agri moon of Edaltus VII, once a peaceful and idyllic place to call home tucked away in the Mid Rim, has now come under occupation by the Sith under the terms of the treaty. The Republic military installation that was hastily erected to defend the now ravaged rock lies in smoldering ruins, and the Sith forces have made their base there. Each day, more dropships arrive with fresh troops, and hope grows dimmer for the people.

But to those loyal to the Republic, the fight is far from over. The planet's governor has warned that any attacks on the occupying forces could be seen as a breach of the treaty, but there are some who are willing to take that chance. Meeting in secret beneath a bombed-out cantina on the outskirts of what was once one of Edaltus VII's major urban centers, this group of freedom fighters is determined to show the Sith the days of their claim on this moon are numbered.

The Order of 66 Presents: Embers of Freedom
As promised, this is the first opportunity to begin roleplaying with your guild-mates in the setting of The Old Republic. This is intended as a way for people to get familiar with the concepts of roleplaying and with your characters. Feel free to use the character you plan to RP as within the guild. Events that take place in this RP thread may or may not be considered canon in future RPs once the game launches, so don't be afraid to experiment.

The RP will proceed in a play-by-post format. If you are unfamiliar with this, then send me a PM and I will help you out, or just observe what others are doing. Be sure to introduce your character and tell us a little bit about them in your opening post. In lieu of using a full game system like SAGA, I will use behind-the-scenes randomization to resolve any conflicts that come up, taking your character into account (if you are a gunslinger, for example, I will give you favorable circumstances on shooting things with one-handed blasters.)

The setting is a secret meeting room beneath a bombed-out cantina, as a group of on-and-off-world freedom fighters meet to discuss the situation of the Sith occupation. Feel free to add items and features to the room as long as it doesn't contradict what has already been described. Be sure to separate Out-of-Character comments ((using double parentheses, and keep them to a minimum.)) Allow me to begin...

---------------

Vand Thoror paces back and forth around the soot-covered durasteel table where a translucent blue holoprojection of the area around the city is sprawled out, visible in the dim light. He is a sturdily-built human of average height with tanned skin and dark, close-cropped hair. Once a shock trooper sent to repel Sith forces on the planet, the treaty has left him stranded here with only the blaster rifle at his side and the damaged breastplate that is more or less all that remains of his armor. A bad burn on his left shoulder is still visible, and has not yet fully healed.

He wipes a smudge off of his Lieutenant's insignia and leans over the table, balancing himself with his arms straight, and speaks in a weary, smoke-and-whiskey baritone.

"Well, I'm sure you all have guessed, but this really doesn't look good. They've re-fortified the better part of the outer retaining wall, and at this point, saying they outnumber us twenty to one would be optimistic. Any kind of frontal assault is going to turn us into smoldering lawn ornaments. The Republic's not coming back, and the governor won't give us so much as a power pack for fear of upsetting that precious treaty. If you've got ideas, spit 'em out. Not like there's time to save 'em for later."

Jorus Rogan "JR" Devol

"JR" Devol will be my main guild character, a human smuggler from Corellia that has gambled (and rambled) his way through life thus far.

JR Devol has always been rather impulsive, prefering quick "gut instinct" decisions to careful "over" planning. Many have called him a cheat and a swindler (his uncanny luck seems to have that effect on the sore loser) and likewise has spent much of his life "in the fast lane" and on the run. Which, leads us to JR's other strength, his slippery guile. He's good, "a real professional" (just ask him, he'll tell ya). JR is also a charming fast-talker, and his attitude depends on his "read" of who he is interacting with. He secretly persues the agenda of the Order of 66 (passed down to him from his uncle), as he explores the galaxy in search of his destiny while accumulating as many credits as he can along the way (of course). He tries to focus his knack of good fortune on setting back those who he sees as enemies of the Republic, and has made quite a few enemies himself along the way. Definetly not the "Poster Boy" of the Order, Jorus Rogan Devol is a "scoundrel with a heart of gold", and if called upon, will join with the others of his secret Order and fight to preserve the Republic!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sitting in the corner, head down, hat hiding his eyes, JR pulls out his flask. He throws back a shot, and then shoots a look up, directly and Vand Thoror.

"Of all the places I could have chose to vacation, lucky for you I suppose Lieutenant. Jorus Rogan Devol at your service, fastest draw you never saw. Its likely you've heard stories about me, heck some of 'em might even be true, so you already know that if there's anyone in this room who can infiltrate that base, its me. You want a distraction so your men can stand a chance at breachin' the weakest point of that retaining wall? Just say the word Boss, unless you had sumpthin else in mind."

Sgt. David Perrian looks from the maps on the table to Lieutenant Thoror and then to the room in general.. all the while the quiet whirl of his cybernetic limbs standing out in the stillness of the room as he moves. His once bright armor is now dull with grim, blood and blaster scoring.

Shaking his salt and pepper topped head he says "Regardless of the speed of your draw or your ability impersonate a Jawa I doubt you would be doing anything more than tossing your life away to the Sith. Each trooper here is a precious commodity and shouldn't be put in harms way unless we can pretty much guarantee a victory with as few causalities as possible."

Looking back down at the map he closes his eyes in thought before continueing "We need to assess out strengths and the Sith's position for weakness and only show our hand when our strength greatly outmatches their weakness. This is a guerilla war and we should treat it as such. We need to go to ground and disappear... popping up only to ambush patrols for supplies until such a time that we can bring proper firepower to bear."

Lt. Thoror nods once, a frown etched seemingly permanently onto his face.

"The sergeant's right, hotshot. We try to breach that wall, distraction or not, it's going to get us nothing but a spot in the Scorched Corpse Hall of Fame. Still, we could use your experience working unseen to our advantage."

He pushes himself up and walks to another end of the table.

"The Sith have a large garrison here. So large it bears investigating why they would devote so many resources, in fact. But that's a question to ask when we're in a slightly better situation."

He runs his bare hand, two fingers extended, along a pass between two wide, rolling hills.

"This road is about an hour's march out. It's what separates the Sith stronghold from the intact farmland. With that many troops to feed, they'll need to use it to get supplies from the locals. Airlifting is a possibility, but low-altitude hovercraft use less fuel. And that's something there isn't an abundance of on this moon. Chances are they'll be transporting supplies by speeder or tracked transport. After all, they can't expect much resistance to their convoys, yet. Hitting them at the right time and place will be difficult. Falling back without leading them here will be the really tough part, though. Thoughts?"

((GM Note: Not everyone is a soldier. If you would like to join in as a displaced civilian or a refugee of some sort, feel free. We can definitely find a place for the less combat-focused characters here.))

The lieutenant looks over, one hand sliently going for the handle of his blaster on instinct. After a moment's pause, he indicates with a tilt of his head for someone to open it, and gives a few quick, military hand signals to anyone who is armed to cover the door from multiple angles.

Without hesitation, JR holsters his blaster, and in a very casual demeanor, he moves toward the beckoning knock, takes a deep breath, relaxes his shoulders, and opens the door.

"You scared the Sith out of us! Get in here, you're late."

"S..sorry, late for what?"

The man at the door is clearly some sort of Jedi, if only because he wears traditional brown robes and the hilt of a lightsaber can be seen tucked into the belt of his tunic. Those who are sufficiently observant will note that the man is thin, but wears robes and clothing designed for someone of a somewhat larger build. Also of interested is the word 'Jeddi' hastily embroidered over the left breast of his robe.

His eyes, brown in color, flit around the room and take in such details as anxious men with hands on blasters, maps laid out on tables and the general atmosphere of a secret meeting and then close for a long second. There is an audible gulp as he swallows and his tongue nervously licks his lips behind a scraggly beard.

"Err... That is... umm.... perhaps I should come back later. I mean, I can see you're all very busy at the moment. I'd hate to disturb you in the middle of what is clearly some very important business. Not that I noticed," he hastily adds. "Not me. No, sir. Blind as a bat I am. Can't see a thing. I'll just be going..."

There is a long pause as he appears to reflect for a moment. "Only, it's just that my master, Master Sullban, perhaps you've heard of him? No? Wonderful man. A bit shouty at times. Especially during training. Or just after training. Or when I've answered a question wrong. Or if I drop my saber. Or if it's just before lunch. Or...well never mind. Anyway, he said I should come to this address and, let me see, what were his exact words? Oh yes, ply my talents elsewhere. Only I think he may have given me the wrong address. Because I can see you're all quite busy and won't be needing me at all. So I'll just be off then, yes?"

JR quickly grabs the slender man's upper arm, yanks him inside, and slams the door shut.

"Hurry up and get in here before somebody sees you, sheeesh!"

OOC: Since this is a learning experience, I will repeat here what I told scoundrel in a PM. be careful about physically forcing something on another's character. It's better to say that you "attempt to grab so-and-so and drag them into the room" rather than saying you do it, because they have the right to resist. If there is a disagreement that can't be solved otherwise, I can call for a roll. This goes for once the game launches as well- it's best to always give a stranger's character the option of responding to any physical action.

Thoror scowls and points his blaster directly at the stranger, signaling JR to shut the door before he can leave.

"You expect me to believe that excuse for an alibi? I'd expect better out of a Sith spy."

"Si-si-si-sith sp-sp-sp-spy...???!!!! Where? Where?"

The man looks around the room, a look of panic on his face. There is a brief 'whoosh' sound and when you are able to locate him again, you find the man has hidden himself approximately half-way under the table near the door. It would have been more, but the table wasn't big enough. Strangely, the table seems to be vibrating until you realize that it is in fact the man making it do that as he shakes with fear.

You can hear him mumbling rapidly under his breath, "Noemotionpeaceohforceohforceignoranceknowledgesomethingsomethingpleasedontkillmedeathohforceimtooyoungtodieyet..." and similar.

JR points under the table as he tilts his head slightly.

"I don't think this man is a spy, not a professional one anyway. But I don't think he's a Jedi either, I mean c'mon, look at 'em, BOSS?"

There is an almost impossibly loud snap of fingers from Sgt. Perrian

"PADAWAN! "

"Get a hold of yourself!"

Waves his right arm in shooing motion "Get out from under that table! "

"Stand up straight and brush yourself off....<relaxing breath> Master Sullban sent you here because we need use of your talents."

"Now boy... Report to the Lt. where and what you've been doing with Master Sullban prior to this meeting..."

Shaking his head now, JR turns back toward the Jedi.

"You gotta be kiddin'........"

The smuggler continues to spout off to himself as he steps towards the table and reaches out his hand, offering to help the frightened man to his feet.

"So your it huh? The name's JR Devol, fastest draw ya never saw. Come on outta there SLIM, nobody's gonna hurt ya.... You gotta name?"

"Pendlewheeze," says the table.

After a few moments of no one actually shooting anyone, Pendlewheeze crawls out from under the table but still remains huddled on the floor.

"Are you sure there aren't any Sith in here? I mean really sure?"
