While in Home One last night before the episode about the Zeison Sha last night, a few other guys and I had a discussion about the KOTOR games, which of the two we preferred, why, stuff we liked etc. The general consensus was that the story of the first was better, while the mechanics of the game were second (Force Crush was awesome!). It made me wonder the opinions of the rest of the Gamer Nation on the matter, as well as whether you believe that The Old Republic lives up to the glory of its predecessors or falls short in terms of story and game play.

So what do you think? Others who participated in the discussion last night feel free to chime in again.

KotOR II is the better game despite being rather buggy, and if it hadn't been pushed out the door before it was finished, it would have had the better story.

Which isn't to say that KotOR doesn't have some points in its favour. Jolee Bindo is easily on my list of top five 'Star Wars' characters. The final battle with Malak was really well done, considering the limitations of the game. I'd probably be more likely to replay it than I would the sequel, just because the ending of KotOR II is such a let down.

SWTOR is hampered by being an MMO and a WoW clone. The gameplay isn't fun and, unlike most BioWare games, the illusion of choice is fleeting at best, because your decisions never really have any impact on the game world. Still, there's some fun characters -- M1-4X is pretty awesome -- and it's nice that you get to play as non-Force users, which is all too rare in 'Star Wars' games, but it's a distant third.

I agree with all of this, except the last sentence - I've replayed KotOR II many, many more times than I have KotOR I, I enjoy the game that much, and with restoration mods appearing over the last few years, it feels like every playthrough offers something new and interesting (while still feeling like it all belongs in the story, unlike a lot - no, most - fan-made mods I've seen for other RPGs).

Just my two cents.

I really liked KotOR I the best. The story was strong, and I had a good time. I don't remember anything special about the mechanics.

KotoR II was ok. The story seemed a bit weak and maybe a bit too long. But I still had fun. I don't recall the game play being any better than KotoR, but maybe I don't pay attention things like that.

SWTOR is a lot of fun despite being an MMO. The story lines are really good (if not world impacting) and I really am enjoying playing through them all. However, a heavy story MMO does not really work that well I think. In general the stories are more fun to play alone, and don't work as well in a group. Other than that, I really enjoy it.

I think Kotor was the best of the bunch overall, but I will go with SWTOR in the modern age.

Thanks,
Duncan

I actually have to disagree. The all trooper group is awesome to play with in the story line and I've found that I have the most fun when doing story related things with a group. It could just be who I play with, but it fleshes out our characters and we tend to make quips about the choices we make.
