Q: Will I be able to play to 20th level?
Characters in Pathfinder Online don't have levels in the classic sense. They develop skills over time, and as their skills develop, and as they meet various prerequisites, they unlock new abilities similar to class features or feats from the tabletop game. Characters following an archetype path will be able to unlock a capstone ability much like the 20th-level capstone abilities in the Pathfinder RPG.
Hrmm not quite sure how I feel about that yet.
taken from FAQ section
https://goblinworks.com/faq/Depends on if you can max out all the skills or not. I think EVE Online has a similar system. If you can max out all the skills... then it is bad. If you basically have a max # of points and can lose some abilities to gain ones that are more important to you, then I like it.
I like the EVE system but I don't think that's what's on offer here but who knows its all conjecture at this point. But yeah the EVE style of in theory being able to max out everything given enough time probably isn't good for this sort of game , but then again if done right maybe it will be. In EVE 100million skill points doesn't make you an epic master of combat, just means you can jump into 20 different classes of ships and be just as good as a 10million SP player who is only good in 2-3 ships.
The trick is that only a handful of skills you have are contributing at any given time with the rest giving you variety of choice but no more power.
e.g. rank 5 medium lasers and rank 5 medium hybrids offers you no benefit unless your using both types of weapons at the same time
I guess a similar system where you might have rank 5 spears, rank 5 axes and rank 5 blades but since your only ever using one at a time your no better 1v1 than someone who's only got rank 5 spears, in a spear fight.
mmm maybe
