Ohhhh Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! :(

Time to buy sets by the case-load and get on ebay before all the sellers catch on

Someone else might pick up the license for a minis-type game but does anyone think WoTC might sell on the rights for the rules themselves...

...or are we gonna have to keep this going through fan content?

That is too bad....We kinda saw it coming but still sad for gamers both RPGer's and Mini's Players.
I, for one, will continue to play and teach the game to my children and any friends that are interested. The game will not change for me. It is good to see that the community is rallying and trying to keep the game moving in verious ways.

I doubt it. To do that, the buyer would need to get both LucasArts licensing (which, I'm presuming, is not cheap) and then license the rules from WotC. If WotC can't make it profitable directly, it's doubtful that someone else would. A resurrection of the line would take something drastic, such as a dramatic improvement in figure quality over the current line. Tabletop games as a whole have been on the decline in favor of electronic media, and SW seems to be no exception, what with TOR coming out next year.

Frankly, I would be surprised if we ever saw any other company pick up the banner of SW RPG/miniatures.

Take heart...all is not lost. Dean Miller of SWMGamers.com and The Sith Holonews Network has a contingency plan already in place. Based on a conversation I had with him Tuesday and an announcement on his website today a group of people being formed will continue to pump out sets of cards with recommended figure to use with them. He has already contacted people to produce maps (I'm not sure if he meant Chris or Matt or someone else) for the game and the tournament scene will continue on as well. While it is sad that we won't have anymore 'official' sets after the next one, our game will live on.

I hate to be all doom and gloom but how long can that last and how scewed or biased will the "sets" be. I think it will be good for a little while but then it will either dwindle off or figures will be so geared toward DCI play that it wont be fun for the rest. I hope not, but it is a possiblity.
New maps, I'm all for, sign me up for those!

EDIT- I reread this post and it does sound bad....let me clarify. I applaud Deans Efforts. Hands down, if anyone can keep the community going it would be him...but i wonder for how long and is this a last ditch effort. I certinly hope the community(in whole-games, D20 radio, bloomilk, and the many other sites) can remain intact.

I'm not sure that I know what you mean when you say that a piece could be good for DCI play but not good for the rest. If you can be more specific then maybe I can voice that concern to them. Now it is more important than ever that we work together as a community.

D_J,
I am not going to worry about it as,at this point, anything that comes out will be a good thing for the community as a whole. (yesterday i was very doom and gloom due to a night of vomiting between me, my wife, and my oldest son, so the few minutes i had on the computer...man, i haven't cleaned the keyboard off since yesterday, gross i'll do that when i'm done here...now where was i...ah ,yes) If the cats at gamers can keep there virtual set rolling then that would be cool. I just worry that most of these sets will be "unique" heavy as the past fan based sets have been...i.e the lost twenty and jedi civil war...i hope they keep to the rules that have been in effect.

If you mean in general we want to keep the game going in the same general direction and not try and change the meta or game mechanics, then I am of the same mind as you are. I know that non-tournament players or more casual players seem to get left out of discussions like this. While I don't think that is intentional, it is my opinion that every player should have an equal voice in what's going on. There are more casual gamers on these forums than the others and if anyone wants to voice anything from that perspective I want to help with that. I am not one of the people who are trying to formulate how to approach future fan-created sets, but I am regularly in touch with them. Right now the priority is get the regional events organized and then GenCon, and then concrete work will begin on virtual sets. So...we have plenty of time to speculate and brainstorm as a community.

I've just realised that on the anniversary show, the one you're trying to get the special guests to come back on...most of whom make an income out of this product we love so much...and the first thing you're gonna have to announce in the news section is this

That sucks dude, we feel for you man. Hopefully I speak for everyone when I say we're with you on this and we all want to see this thing continue

Long live Star War Miniatures, long live Minis Mayham!!!

Thats good to hear. I want to be clear that i am not against the game continuing in the hands of swgamers. I have the upmost respect for Dean & Co. I also have the highest of hopes that the game will continue...in some form.

This a shocking, sad announcement. I wish it were not so. Maybe WOTC will pick up SWM and SWRGPSE sometime later on?

But for those who have not given up on SWM, join www.saveswm.proboards.com . It may be just an slightly foolish idea, but if there's a chance of actually saving SWM...I'll take it.
