My wife and I have been looking for something to do together for quite some time now. I can't manage to convince her to play minis with me, but when I marvelled at the custom scenes in this thread, my wife said "we could do that...would you be interested".
Long story short, what are basics we should have to start making these with? I am thinking of building a base of some sort to start with.
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have now repainted some figs....not much, just simple mostly. Though I am proud of my Dark Camaasi, my Camoflauged Bothan commando and my Black/red and White/green duro scouts (made in honor of Spy Vs. Spy). I may get pics up.
Great terrain Jawas, I've seen some of it elsewhere too. I think you should put squares and terrain markers to make it playable. That would be cool to play on.

Not sure if this is the place to post this but..........I just got my Chris West "swamp no cannon map" and it's amazing!! The temple will be my default comp. play map since it's mirrored so well. The only thing about it is no doors mean most comp squads will be wasting points on the door control pieces. But if I win the choice you can bet I won't!

Darthewokfett - Noticed that too.
The other positive to note is, with different maps and also by playing different scenarios it really encourages players come up with more balanced squads, so that the squad can deal with a very different set of circumstances and eventualities.
A strong melee-based squad relying on door control will generally get what it is owed on a map like that.
It makes you think more about what you might roll out.

I don't think I've posted these here yet, but these are a group of Custom Minis Stats I've created on my own:
ADMIRAL PELLON Imperial Cost: 40 Hit Points: 50 Defense: 18 Attack: +8 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Unique Tactical Maneuvering: This character does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Imperial Reserves 20 – Initiative roll of 6 add 20 points of Imperials Affinity: This Character can be in a New Republic squad with no characters that contain a Force Rating. Thrawn’s Second: If this character is in a squad with a character whose name contains “Thrawn” he doubles Thrawn’s Commander Effect range. Commander Effect: All Troopers within 6 squares gain Tactical Maneuvering.
ARCA JETH Old Republic Cost: 30 Hit Points: 90 Defense: 19 Attack: +12 Damage: 20 Special Abilities Unique Melee Attack Light Tutor Double Attack Force 2 Force Renewal 1 Lightsaber Defense 1 Force Heal 30 Commander Effect: Allied Unique Characters with a Force Rating gain Lightsaber Defense.
SELKATH MEDIC Old Republic Cost: 13 Hit Points: 20 Defense: 14 Attack: +0 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Melee Heal 30 Medical Miracle – Adjacent Allies gain Avoid Defeat. Questionable Loyalty – can be in a Sith squad, but costs +5.
DUROS SPACER Fringe Cost 5 Hit Points: 10 Defense: 13 Attack: +4 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Pilot Evade
KLAATOONIAN BODYGUARD Fringe Cost 8 Hit Points: 40 Defense: 16 Attack: +5 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Bodyguard Resilient – Immune to critical hits. Hold-out blaster: +20 Damage to target within 6 squares.
TALON KARRADE, INFORMATION BROKER Fringe Cost 40 Hit Points: 50 Defense: 16 Attack: +6 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Unique Opportunist Information Broker: After squad set up, this Player may exchange up to 30 points of pieces in their squad for new pieces. Those pieces are considered Activated for the first round of the skirmish. Commander Effects: Allied Vornskrs cost -1 less. Adjacent Vornskrs gain Bodyguard.
C-3PO, PROTOCOL DROID New Republic Cost: 10 Hit Points: 30 Defense: 17 Attack: +0 Damage: +0 Special Abilities Unique Droid Melee Attack It’s a Trap Negotiator: Any Fringe enemy targeting this character or any Adjacent Unique Ally must make a SAVE 11. Failure means the enemy piece must Target another piece. How Typical: If this character is more than 6 squares away from an ally he gains Speed 4 and Draw Fire. Affinity: Characters whose name contains R2-D2 and not C-3PO can be in this character’s squad.
LEIA ORGANA SOLO, LADY VADER New Republic Cost: 40 Hit Points: 80 Defense: 17 Attack: +8 Damage: 20 Special Abilities Unique Melee Negotiator: Any Fringe enemy targeting this character or any Adjacent Unique Ally must make a SAVE 11. Failure means the enemy piece must Target another piece. Reserves 20 – Initiative roll of 16 add 20 points of Rebel or New Republic non-uniques. Lady Vader – Any character whose name contains “Noghri” can be in this character’s squad. Force 4 Force Sense 1 Lightsaber Block 1 Commander Effects: Allied Noghri gain Bodyguard and gain an additional 2 squares of movement.
YUUZHAN VONG HUNTER DROID New Republic Cost: 41 Hit Points: 90 Defense: 17 Attack: +9 Damage 30 Special Abilities Droid Double Attack Yuuzhan Vong Hunter: +4 Attack and +10 Damage against enemy Yuuzhan Vong Rapport: This piece cost -1 when in a squad with a character whose name contains “Lando”. It’s a Trap Radar: This character gains Accurate Shot against enemies with Stealth and can target characters with Stealth regardless of Commander Effects.
MON MOTHMA, REBEL LEADER Rebels Cost: 36 Hit Points: 40 Defense: 12 Attack: +0 Damage: 0 Special Abilities Unique Melee Affinity – New Republic Rebel Reserves: Initiative Roll of 16 adds 20 points of Rebels or New Republic pieces to this character’s squad. Fringe Reserves: Initiative Roll of 11 adds 20 points of Fringe pieces to this character’s squad. Rebel Conscription: All allied pieces are considered Rebel pieces. For the Alliance: If this character is defeated, all remaining allies gain Long Shot +20. Commander Effect: All non-unique Followers are immune to any special ability that would cause them to switch squads.
SHIMRRA Yuuzhan Vong Cost: 70 Hit Points: 200 Defense: 22 Attack: +17 Damage: 20 Special Abilities Unique Force Immunity Melee Attack Triple Attack Momentum Opportunist Cleave Grapple – Replaces attacks. On a Successful attack, the target is considered activated and cannot move by any means from that square until their next turn. SAVE 11. Coup de Grace – Replaces Turn. This character can does 100 points of Damage to a Grappled target. Vonduun Crab Armor 6 Commander Effect: All Yuuzhan Vong Followers gain Avoid Defeat, Close-Combat Fighting, and Mighty Swing.
ONIMI Yuuzhan Vong Cost: 37 Hit Points: 70 Defense: 21 Attack: +14 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Unique Force Immunity Melee Grapple Unstable – Immune to any Special Ability that prevents him from targeting an enemy. Trickery – If this character is defeated choose one ally within 6 squares. That ally gains this character’s Commander Effect. Stealth Cunning Attack +10 Affinity – Allied Shimrra costs -1 less. Commander Effect: Allied Yuuzhan Vong gain Stealth, Trickery and Droid Hatred – If an allied Yuuzhan Vong is defeated by a Droid or Cyborg, the rest of the Yuuzhan Followers gain Droid Hunter (+4 Attack and +10 Damage to Characters with the Droid or Cyborg Special Ability.)
SHEDAO SHAI Yuuzhan Vong Cost: 42 Hit Points: 100 Defense: 20 Attack: +13 Damage: 10 Special Abilities Unique Force Immunity Melee Attack Double Attack Melee Reach 2 Poison +20 Deep Cut – An enemy hit by this character’s attack takes 10 points of Damage on their first activation after the hit. SAVE 11. Cunning Attack +20 Vonduun Crab Armor 11 Commander Effect All Yuuzhan Vong Allies gain Melee Reach 2 All Yuuzhan Vong Followers gain Deep Cut.
YAMMOSK Yuuzhan Vong Cost: 34 Hit Points: 200 Defense: 12 Attack: +0 Damage: 0 Special Abilities Force Immunity Fear: Any enemy within 6 squares has a -4 to Attack and Defense Disruptive Yuuzhan Vong Reserves 20 – On an initiative roll of 16 Emplacement

Have you come up with a formula for how many points each stat line, ability and commander effect is worth or is it more of a gut feeling type of thing?
I'm pretty sure I would struggle to know where to start on something like this.
