A smith creates stuff made from metal, mainly tools and harmless normal things.

Weaponsmith specialize in making weapons and Armorers yeah, you get it.

Yeah, obviously I figured they were more specialized, but why couldn't a smith just make anything?

Imagine you are a poor smith in a dirtfarmer village in Bretonia. Sure you could make a Sword, but yo would make errors and mistakes and the Sword would be of poor quality. Making good weapons and Armor was a bit like a secret.

I am no expert on smithing, but here is my take on the subject.

While all three smiths involve heating metals and reshaping them, they use very different methods in their craft.

I would not think of smithing as being a general skill. You have the knowledge of making general metal goods and tools. An important distinction is the ability to shoe a horse.

Armor and weapon smithing stand on their own.

If you had one of three, I would treat the others skills like basic untrained (half your stat). A smith or armor smith is likely to produce a crappy (poor quality) sword, but it would be a functioning sword.

A person trained in all three is a master of metalworking.
