As predicted.

At Last, Free!

As anticipated, EA is opening up its portfolio for free gamers. According to a recent news feed from Reuters, EA is planning to offer at least 15 levels (from July) of its magnum opus, Star Wars: Old Republic for free to play. The company expects that this free offering will boost its dwindling subscriber base going forward. EA lost approximately 400K subscribers in the fiscal fourth quarter. EA expects to earn significant revenue from additional features and through micro-transactions by selling in-game based items.

Since Legacy levels can unlock things that affect gameplay, I doubt they will be purchasable (although certain perks like xp boosts might.) Social gear would not surprise me, though. Microtransactions are the new standard in the MMO market. I'm well past freaking out about them. (Not saying anyone is freaking out, it's just a common response.)

I actually don't mind this. After playing LOTRO after free to play, I found myself loving this measure. You could still pay for a subscription and get bonus points each month. I approve.

I completely agree with Koron. I don't mind free-to-play at all because for those of us who choose to pay for the subscription, we get the benefits of it. Plus you'll definitely get more players.

Whoa now, Micro-transactions do not mean Free-to-play. You can have a cash store in a subscription-based game, and that's what they're talking about *cough*sparklepony*cough*

Yep, to me it is still going to be F2P for the first 15 levels, but the key words there are "Additional Features" "by selling in-game items".

This could be the same as it was in STO, or it could mean all of those things that they plan on selling for millions of in game credits could equal $20us.

I appreciated how the digital vanity items didn't really disrupt game play.
But; the Throw-Pillows, Sexy action figures, Talking Pandaren Bottle Opener, Collector coins, beer steins, and Diablo Night Light seem...a bit much.

Although, the mousepad with the undead-guy, rocking out on an axe, while riding atop a dinosaur as it operates a machine gun astride a flying shark bearing lasers is pretty freaking Epicus Maximus
