Regarding the listener question with the contest of riddles:
I would do it as a contest of attributes is several parts.
The first part is composing the riddle. This needs to exploit intelligence and charisma. Each character in the group selects an attribute to roll against, At least 1 must choose Int and at least 1 must choose Cha. Each player rolls their level number of d20s keeping the lowest. This value is subtracted from the attribute and totalled for the group.
The second part is solving the riddles: Either each group tries to solve each riddle, scoring a point for success or the group with the best total against each riddle scores a point. Int and Wis are the attributes for solving and all PCs may choose the same attribute. The totals are accumulated the same way as for creating the riddles, but if the total is not greater than the creation value, the group failed to solve the riddle.
The contest could go several rounds, maybe with 1 group eliminated each round to prolong the drama.
While this does reduce the contest to a series of rolls, it's not quite so arbitrary as each sode rolls a d20, high number wins. It does compensate for characters that are smarter than their players and vice versa. The contestants could also cheat. Thieves might try to hear noise to get a head start on the competition. Magic-users might use clairaudience, oe Wizard Ear (if they bothered to make their own spell).
