Steel you say that, but in the crew auditions Azmyth seemed to go into great detail about how guns basically don't exist and how they are basically useless. No academical cartridges, never anyway to get reloading better than a swift action, how they are unreliable, and it's a lit wick falling onto a open pan in order to light it, how they aren't going to be touch attacks in the first range increment.
I just am kind of thrown off by the seeming disconnect between Azmyth posting this thread about how there will be cannons, you saying gun powder is more readily available than in standard golarion, and then Azmyth's assertions about gun powder in the casting call.
Not trying to criticize, you guys play your game any which way you want, I'm just a bit confused.
No, you misheard. It all comes down to this: the rule is that no firearm can be made to be reloaded faster than a swift action and none can fire against touch AC
beyond the first range increment. (Grit cannot be used to hit against Touch AC beyond first range,) Unlike bow weapons, firearm wielders
may take Attacks of Opp from range and do not themselves provoke when being fired. You can use them 5 feet away safely without provoking. That's essentially our firearms rules. Moral of the story: Cover is handy and there are worse things than being prone.
Being able tio Op with a firearm is NASTY. Trying to Bull Rush without improved BR in the first few rounds of combat while pistols are still loaded is likely to get you shot in the face from a few attackers at once -- from 40 feet away in several directions.
We'll end up using cannon as area attacks, not as aimable weapons. Frankly, the entire idea of being able to aim a cannon (other than a swivel gun) at an individual target is fucking stupid to begin with. They damage an area; you roll your save. Evasion is handy

As for "beyond the first range increment", I'm not worried. On board a ship? There is only one range increment for most purposes; up close and personal. And we have already stated that heavy armor at sea will cause you to drown. You cannot swim in it, no matter what the damn Pathfinder Rules say. SO we won't be having to fire at sea against plate armor anyways, no matter the range increment. Anyone stupid enough to wear heavy armor will be bull rushed overboard. Hasta la vista.
Azmyth's experience with firearms so far has been in PFS at the hands of Musket Masters, a twinked out gunslnger class that most of us who have played in PFS don't really want in a S&S campaign. We will go with cutlasses in one hand and pistols in the other, ultimately. We WANT their to be both types of weapons in use by the same player and foe at the same time. We are aiming for that "feel" to our combats by early mid-level.
Gunpowder IS more readily available in our S&S than in Std Golarion, where it is essentially confined to Alkenstar. In the std. S&S AP as written, there is precious little gunpowder at all until Vol 6.
