Post #21 The Power Source - Don't Make The Fighter Cry
*sob* I'm just so happy to be here again ...

Well Gamer Nation, thanks for letting us power your listening device another time! This week, I'm joined by Ryven Cedrylle and Quinn Murphy, some fantastic and creative fellas who descended from on high to speak on my Cast! We talk about a lot of things, all of which can all be looked at in our Show Notes, and now you can listen in! =D

As always, make sure you send us your thoughts, comments, questions, bumpers, and segments at powersourcepodcast@gmail.com ! We love to hear them, and it really makes the show better. Thanks to everyone who participated in this episode; it was a lot of fun, and it wouldn't have been without your help!

Also, make sure you stick around after the show proper because we have some FANTASTIC segments for you to listen to! No, really; these segments made my week, and I'm sure they'll make yours! Thanks to everyone that sent one in, and I sure hope you keep them coming, because it gives me something to listen to that I haven't already heard. ... Also, it makes you famous. ;)

Remember the segment contest is still running, and the more segments you send in, the better chance you have! And, for those who haven't sent one in yet, there's still plenty of time to throw your name in the ring! Join in the fun!

Some quick notes about segments:
* mp3 format works best for me
* Keep your content within the realm of D&D and family friendly
* Try to stay somewhere shorter than 5 minutes (trust me, you'll be glad you did)
* Get it to me by Friday (of any given week) for the best chance to get on the show

The work I've seen with the segments so far has been amazing, and I know that there are others out there who want in on the fun, so this is your chance!

Thanks again! Remember, The Power Source is powered by you, so send in your stuff for Martial Practices! Until next time, stop crying you sissy Fighters!

Well, Praion, "real" is a difficult term. If you met me in person and said "hey, Ryven" I would answer so in a way it is a real name. It isn't the one my parents gave me or use on legal documentation, though.

Glad you enjoy hearing me on the show. I feel like I'm utterly incomprehensible sometimes. I think I need to boost my mic for the hosting the same way I do for Aberrant Rules to clear it up. I have a few more things to add now that the show's up:

1) If you don't get the Bugs Bunny reference, go here.

2) In case you didn't see the Segment Ideas thread, I'm looking for someone (or more than one someone) to do a spinoff podcast with me about LFR. If you're a regular LFR player and like to hear yourself talk, let me know.

3) I really enjoyed the segments at the end of the show. A little bit of unsolicited feedback for everyone...

PinballWyzard - Another excellent segment! If I ever played in person, I'd definitely use some of your tips. I'm not sure if the music is yours or Jared's; it's a little bit loud, so if you're doing the mixing, you may want to drop the gain one or two points to hear you speaking.

David - Definitely do another one. I'm obviously a big fan of houseruled material and I miss the plethora of 3PP stuff that the 3E era was famous for, regardless of quality. 4E homebrew is a badly neglected sector. Looking forward to seeing what you pick for a name and theme music. Also, welcome to the game!

ParticleMan - I actually had to go back and listen to the show again because I forgot what you did! The theme music (at least for me) dominated (heh heh) your segment; I remembered your name and the music far more easily than your content. Shorten the intro so that we focus on what you have to say. Other than that, very solid. CharOp is always a deep well of material to discuss. Can I request Shaman?

Praion - You need to sing every time. LOL Maybe its just the combination of a heavy German accent and Black Sabbath. It sounds like you're recording in a big empty space? There's like an echo or something. If you're recording with Audacity, you might be able to negate some of that by putting it through the Compressor and upping the attack/delay times. I'm not really an audio guy so if someone else knows more feel free to correct me. I particularly enjoyed your idea of Warforged as reincarnated saints.

"Borrowed Not Stolen" - I don't know who this is since I think you forgot to identify yourself. Dude.. wow. A truly impressive amount of detail and a faithful translation of screen to tabletop. I'd like to play in your game. Thing is, it took you over 10 minutes and that's a very long time to listen to any one person describe a single scene. My suggestion to you is to pick two or three features of a scene and focus on translating them rather than the entire scene. It's going to take me two or three listens to pick up everything you laid down and while I will definitely go do it, less can be more with a podcast segment. I used to do a solo show on a non-gaming related topic completely by myself and it only ran about 7 minutes long since that's as long as I can stand to hear myself talk in one sitting! Distillation is key.

I enjoyed every one of your segments and look forward to rejoining the ranks this week. Good luck!

-Ryven

Thanks. And thanks for all the advice.
I found I had the best results with a handheld mike dangling above my mouth but I'll try other methods if I do another.

And psychopez was also right, I did hate the sound of my voice... Oh man, did I hate the sound of my voice.

Well look at this! more proof that WotC does in fact listen to D20 radio. Mere coincidence that this article comes out after Quinn and I beat the living crap out of the Ritual system? I think not! (DDI only, folks. Just warning you now.)

Hi, thanks everyone for this one.

Fuller comments on the segments once I've listened to them again over the weekend.

Here is the image that sprang to my mind when the talk of crying fighters came up, I think it was an old Dragon cover. I've read an article sometime by the artist who said he could imagine the half-orcs runny nose and tears almost freezing in the morning cold as he communes with his god.

Awesome piece

This one I found at the same time is is similar and good (I think) :)

This week on The DM WarChest I talked about taking advantage of your local craft/hobby store to pick up wood turnings to use with your mini's.

This is a great way to add dimension and function to your combat encounters. I had taken a picture of the sales wall at a store in town as well as some other but apparently I didn't save them on my phone camera! I did have a couple on my pc that don't do as good of a job of showing the pieces but they will get you started.

The first is the a picture of my DM kit I made with these. You'll also see that there are a number of jewels and gold beads as well. These work great to sprinkle a little treasure on the field. Craft stores are full of this stuff for jewelry making.

The second picture is a battle in a 'training room'. Here we used the larger barrels to represent pillars and the spindles to represent fighting dummies.

The last picture is a quick mock up I did after I painted a few of the wooden blocks to look like crates. I did a half ass job but it kinda makes it look stylized :)

If I can get the right pictures in place it will fit my segment better.

And next weeks segment will arrive as an MP3 Jared!!! Sorry for the hassle LOL
!

It was a fun episode indeed! Love being on the show, and I can't believe how the ritual talk exploded into it's own entity.

As for the Basics vs. Essentials (on the Warlock article) -- speculation at RPG.net is that they've renamed the series to prevent confusion with the Essentials line of products coming out later this year.

Ryven,
You mentioned a software program that works with a number of products to pull in tracking. I forget the link at this moment but it might be nice to add here if you recall it easily.

Frey

I am not French and never have been and unless my undershirt can be made into a flag I never will be.

LOE, I.. don't know what you're talking about. Do you mean MasterPlan, the program I mentioned on Unearthed Arcana?

Ryven - Yeah, that was it thanks. Sorry I was not more clear.

Pinball - Enjoy the segment. I have a similar setup with craft supplies. As a side I took a threadspool, expanded the hole and screwed in an old flashlight bulb. It looks like a crystal ball or phylactery and can be used for many things. If you paint the bulb they can work as other items as well. I also picked up some popsicle sticks and glued some twine across the backs to make a small wooden bridge that moves when they walk across it. I have not seen the barrels you have though. Mind if I ask the name of the store where you purchased them (if its big box and not local)?

Michael's really is the second best store for gamers. I picked-up a tube of toy horses that were the *perfect* size for mini's mounts, and they're a great source for reasonably sized plastic animals. Aquatic ones are particularly useful since there's not going to be any official sea critters.

Post Where are the show notes and Ryven's Ritual house rules?
Ryven and Jared,

You mention "show notes" on your show, ie "we will post this in the show notes", but I don't really see any notes on your web site. Did you mean this forum? Or is there some place I am not looking?

Also- Ryven mentions he has House Rules for running rituals in his game: any chance you can post those rules or give a link? I really like how you guys pointed out the problems with rituals, but I really need a better way to run them in my game, as none of my players even touch a ritual with a 10' pole!

P.S. Awesome show, you are one of the best podcasts out there. Ryven is one of the best guests IMO, he brings up important issues (such as Rituals) and provides great insight and knowledge.
